Saving Time and Money with BJ’s Wholesale Club

>> Friday, March 20, 2015

Streamlining our shopping trips has become a huge must since having Ada. And not only that, but also finding a few key places to get great deals on our family essentials. We’ve shared a lot with you guys about carving back our grocery shopping bill, but I’ve never delved much into bulk-buying and its role in our household operation.

Utilizing bulk stores as a one-stop shop is still a new approach we’re trying out.

BJ's Wholesale Club recently offered me the opportunity to check out BJ’s Wholesale Club with a one-year membership. The You Carry the Baby, We’ll Carry the Rest platform resonates with my family because there are times when hunting around for good deals at multiple stores is just tiresome and time-consuming. I like the idea of finding everything from diapers to groceries to cleaning supplies to sofas and beyond in just one place -- especially if the prices are right. My mother-in-law is a long-time member of BJs, so we’ve been getting sneak peeks into the store for years now.

It was fun to check this place out on my own.

Our store location is actually north of where we live in Ithaca, NY (where Stephen and I attended college), so we took the opportunity to cash in some in-law babysitting and make it a date. Yes. Dates are different after having kids, right? I’ll take any reprieve I can get! My mother-in-law was so excited we were going to check out her favorite store, so she gave me some tips on stuff to check out.

Since we’re looking forward to adding to our family in the near future, I was particularly impressed by the number of baby supplies and products the store stocks. Anything from cups to diapers to snacks to soaps to bibs and more.

I got one in each color.

This store is massive, so I thought I’d shoot some photos so you can get the grand scope of their offerings:

I loved the vitamin selection:

And look at all those cooking spices!

Here’s something we often run out of:

Baby stuff:

We haven’t decided on diapering for #2 (after I ruined our cloth diaper stash, sadly), but BJ’s certainly has disposables covered -- and at some great prices and quantities. Check out all these Pampers (@Pampers on Twitter + on Facebook), friends!

Definitely one of those things you always want to buy in bulk so you don’t run out:

Overall, I was impressed by the wide selection and quality of the products we found at BJ’s. Compared to similar stores, I appreciate the organic and natural food offerings first and foremost. It was the lack of these sorts of items that kept us from joining other clubs in the past. BJ’s has lots of healthy snacks for Ada and whole ingredients for my own from-scratch cooking. I also found a lot of the stuff (cleaning supplies, health items, etc.) in the brands I usually buy, which hasn’t been the case with other big box stores.

And my mother-in-law was totally right about the produce. So much good stuff in big quantities that make sense for our family. We often eat a lot of the same things, so I always feel like we’re running out to the store to stock up. Buying more of certain items to begin with doesn’t just save money, it’s way more convenient when life is so hectic.
