Smart + Thrifty Tips for Buying Second-Hand Clothing

>> Monday, August 14, 2017

So many of you have messaged me privately about my second-hand shopping escapades. It’s really one of my biggest hobbies. There’s definitely a method to my madness. One of my favorite bloggers -- Jessica over at What I Wore -- recently shared her own tips for shopping thrift, garage sales, etc. You should definitely check those out.

Here’s how I approach things, at least when it comes to clothing. I have a host of other tips for household and other items.

Make the rounds

A lot of people tell me they aren’t able to find good stuff at their local shops. And for some of you, that may be an ongoing issue, I understand. But for others -- don’t give up with just one visit! Consider that these places get new stock from time to time. How often will certainly depend on the shop, so it’s a good idea to ask the sales associates how often new stuff comes in.

I find that if I try to hit up all my local places in a rotation about every two weeks, I am able to see a wealth of goodies. Of course, I still see that crazy cat embroidered vest at Good Will even a month down the line, but many other awesome things have filtered into the aisles as well.

I also have discovered that where you go matters. We live in a large-ish area with many different pockets of age brackets, income levels, etc. While I have found good things at most stores . . . I tend to more heavily hit certain areas where I find the demographic more closely matches my own. Well, and also where middle-aged women who like FLAX clothing live.

Know your style

I know what I’m looking for. Usually natural fibers. Linen, mostly. FLAX the brand specifically (here are my 5 favorite FLAX outfits for summer). If you have a tried-and-true brand or fabric or cut or item you like, look for it specifically and try to forget the rest. In my own experience, I have picked up things that I would have never purchased simply because I thought it looked kinda sorta neat. Then? I never put it on because, well, it’s just not my style.

You may find it helpful to write down a list of things you like. Or things you need. But try to avoid getting random stuff that appeals to you based on price alone. I went through this period of time when I thought maybe I’d like to wear corduroy jumpers simply because I was finding a lot of them and they were cheap. Nope.

Oh, and while you’re at it, don’t hoard things just because they are what you’re “looking” for. Again, I LOVE FLAX . . . but I don’t need a lime green FLAX vest or something that doesn’t match my style.

Know your size

I really, really don’t recommend trying on thrift store clothing. Even while shopping at a “nice” store, I contracted scabies when I was in my early twenties. It’s helpful to know your size in different brands or simply by looking at the item. You may even want to bring a measuring tape with you to help. I tend to wear things big or in a freer size, so usually I’m pretty good if something is a tad too big on me.

Instead of trying on, I tie my bag tightly after leaving the store and immediately throw it in the wash when I get home. I dry in the dryer as well -- anything to help kill weird stuff that might be on there. I am usually just fine with sizing because I’m a ninja at this stuff. BUT I’m not immune to mistakes. So, that all said, if you do end up getting something home that just won’t work after washing, you may also try to re-sell it or donate it again if it only set you back a couple dollars.

Oh, and I would recommend checking all sizes. Some things are either in the wrong section (misplaced) or -- at least with vintage clothing -- sizes have changed over time. I wear anywhere between a 2 and 8 in different modern brands. With vintage, I can wear up to a 12!

Scan and keep moving

This goes with knowing what you want -- keep moving! If I stop too long to consider something, the chances are that I’m more convincing myself that it’s a good deal or whatever. If I see something that I immediately love, I grab it and move onto the next item. Oh, and if you’re curious . . . I seriously go item by item when I shop. Since I know that I mostly like linen, it’s pretty easy to scan for this fabric among all the other things in the store.

And any seasoned second-hand shopper will tell you to inspect your items well before purchasing. You will find stains, holes, tears, and other reasons why these things may have ended up in the shop. If it’s something you can fix, great. If not, put it back.

Or  . . .

Ask for deals

If I find anything wrong that I think I can fix, I ask for a discount. Some stores offer while others aren’t as willing. Don’t go overboard. But, for example, I found a linen dress once that looked like it had simply fallen on the ground and got some dirt/dust on it that would clearly come out in the wash. Still, I said “gee, I love this . . . but I sure hope this stain comes out . . . would you take off anything?” And they took off 20 percent with no issues.

If something has an issue I’m not as confident about resolving and they won’t take anything off, I walk away. Sometimes after saying never mind, they’ll take off more and other times, not. It’s all part of the game.

Remember -- you can (often) return

At the same time, check out your store’s return policies. If you do bring something home and don’t like it or find it has issues, you’ll want to return if you can. Some shops only offer in-store credit while others will give you your cash back. Some store do not offer any type of return policy. This is, again, where checking items carefully comes in to play. I’ve been burned a few times. I have mended a few things . . . but others were beyond help or my abilities.

Consider modification

There have been times I’ve found dresses or pants and I love the cut + fabric, etc. But not the color. You can actually change that, you know. RIT dye is extremely useful in these cases + easy to use. Jessica recently darkened the color of a cool pair of leather boots she found. And there’s a blogger called ReFashionista who buys second-hand clothing that some find hideous and transforms it into hip, ultra-wearable pieces through her sewing skills.

Look beyond what’s in front of you to see what it could be. But don’t go too crazy or elaborate. I find that quick fixes or changes work best for my skill set.

Don’t forget shoes

I shunned the shoe section at thrift shops for years because the idea of wearing other people’s shoes creeped me out. Here’s the thing . . . some of the shoes you will find are either like-new or entirely new. It always astounds me. For example, I found a like-new pair of FRYE boots (similar to these that go for HUNDREDS!) this weekend. I also found a brand new pair of Eileen Fisher espadrilles (just like these that are currently in stores for $135+).

Don’t forget to check the shoes. Period.

Mind the calendar

Most thrift shops in my area have sales throughout the year. This weekend the thrifty shopper up the road had 50 percent off everything for just one day. I think they do it twice a year. Ask your associates if there are any planned sales. Many stores also have tag sales where, say, purple tags are 30 percent off or blue are 50 percent off. This usually means that whatever the item is has been sitting on the shelves longer than other items.

Again: Inspect your loot carefully for damage . . . but otherwise celebrate finding a super deal!

Go alone, if you can

I try to shop thrift on my own. I find when I bring the kids that they get terribly bored. I am also much (MUCH!) faster without them. So, I try to join my thrifting trips with my grocery shopping, which I also try to do alone as much as possible. If I’m scanning and moving on, I find I can go through a whole store in like 15-20 minutes. That means I could hit up three in the span of an hour.

For me, this is great entertainment and exhilarating deal-finding, but I totally understand if this isn’t your idea of fun that you might want to spend your solo time doing other things . . . NOT. :)

Let's Talk LuLaRoe // Good, Bad, Ugly

>> Friday, November 4, 2016

Yes. I am sucked in by the whole LuLaRoe thing. I resisted it for so long. I love the cuts. I love the prints. I love the hunt, really. So, I wanted to do a post sharing some of my thoughts on this brand. Because I've got a whole lot of good, bad, and ugly things to say. Maybe you can chime in, too.

I love the clothes

I am carrying around a few extra pounds after Eloise's pregnancy and everything that came before it. This is no secret. I'm trying hard to give myself grace. And you know what? Wearing leggings and flowing dresses and tops has helped my confidence a bit. The fabrics are pretty. The clothing is well made (for the most part). Having some mix-and-match pieces makes getting dressed on little sleep a breeze.

My favorite piece is the Julia dress. And I recently found the print I had been searching for at the regular retail price.

Score!

The clothes are versatile

You really can dress up or dress down a lot of the clothing. I'm thinking the dresses and shirts more than the leggings. The pieces are really perfect for me because I work at home. Of course I want to look nice when I go out, but I don't need to go too over the top.

A lot of my friends love wearing their stuff to work too, though. Because they have some great options, like the Cassie skirt (I don't have one -- but the fabric is awesome). I would have loved having these things in my closet when I worked my last 9-to-5. I hated my work wardrobe.

Buying clothing at home is easy

Going shopping at stores for clothes these days is tough. Sure, I can leave the kids with Stephen on the weekend and head out . . . but we get so little family time as it is. When I do finally get some time on my own, I like to see friends, go for long runs, or just do other stuff besides clothes shopping. Plus, having the ability to shop in my bedroom or living room helps pass the time during all those hours of nursing, right?

Plus, when you go out to the regular stores? You're bound to have the same outfit as someone else. LuLaRoe only prints like 1,000 items in a single print. That's cool because you won't likely find yourself wearing the same thing as someone else.

The resale value is good

Sometimes you buy something you don't end up loving. But you might figure this out after the limited time when you can exchange it with the consultant. In these cases, I've had great success selling over Poshmark. My LuLaRoe clothing -- by far -- is the fastest selling stuff in my closet. I can usually get what I paid for the piece, even if it doesn't have the tag attached.

Sometimes I've made even slightly more . . . but that leads into something I don't like, so keep reading.

I hate the buying process

OK. I like the idea of supporting individual women who want to make money selling clothing. But honestly? Who can go to a pop-up at a moment's notice at like 3PM on a Wednesday? And in some of the larger groups, it's pure ridiculousness. While I didn't want Halloween leggings, I did go into a group to browse them one day. By the time the shop had opened . . . ALL of the leggings were sold. We're talking in like 30 seconds flat. It was weird. It got me scratching my head.

I have also gone to one in-home pop-up at a consultant's house. It, too, was weird. The women were all very sweetly and gently pushing by one another to grab what they wanted. Like black Friday at your favorite store when you're trying not to be too obviously obsessed with what you want to the point of clawing someone's eyeballs out. Sorry to get so graphic, but I swear!

Also: People bought so much clothing. I can only imagine how much these consultants are making!

People are insane with this stuff

I mention Halloween leggings. It was pure mania. I went on Ebay to see what they were selling for and NO JOKE they were in the hundreds of dollars range. For a pair of leggings. With skulls or witches on them. One pair sold for $450. C'mon, people! There is a certain pair of leggings that I would just die for (medallions), but the cheapest I've seen then listed on Ebay is like $120.

For a freaking pair of buttery soft leggings.

I will admit I got roped into finding my unicorns on Ebay and paying a premium of $60. I don't won't do that anymore. Nope. The minute I sent in my payment I felt like an oaf. Unless it's retail or only very marginally above, I just wait for regular sales and pay retail price.

Some of the styling suggestions are just plain awful

If you ever Google "how to style X piece of LuLaRoe," you'll inevitably land on some YouTube tutorials. Some of the suggestions are awesome. Like pulling up a Julia to make a long shirt. Tying a Carly in the front for some flair, etc. But then there's the whole "buy an Irma a million sizes too big and slip it off your shoulders and tie it for a fun dress" and "tie the sleeves and sides on your way too gigantic perfect tee you just had to have because it was in your print" some other crap that is just fugly.

I think some of the suggestions might even be attempts to get women to buy sizes way up or whatever just so they will, yup, buy something if there isn't a piece if their true size. Just my theory.

Because . . .

I think I have a slight addiction

And I don't share this lightly. I do think there's an aspect of buying LuLaRoe that can be addicting -- in a bad way. So many women are trying to get certain prints. It's like a race and, of course, you want to win. You always want to win. At least that's how I feel sometimes. I don't need any more clothing right now. But when I see a sale group go "OPEN" on Facebook or hear about a local pop-up, I immediately want to go.

And when I look at all the videos and other things, I am starting to feel like it's more than just sharing the love of the clothing. The whole culture around this clothing is made to suck you in and make you want to buy more, more, more. It's smart from a business perspective, but I am trying to ignore these tactics and their impact on my own shopping tendencies.

Thankfully, there are alternatives

I've shared the Viv Collection leggings on here before. I think they are a good option for adding to the leggings collection without spending an arm and a, uh, leg. I reach for my Viv leggings as often as I reach for my LuLaRoe. I may even get more compliments with the cheaper brand -- especially the volcanic rose (below) and the paisley.

They even make flow-y shirts and pencil skirts!

So, those are my thoughts on LuLaRoe.

I'm sure I'll hop on someday to share how I style the pieces I do have. For now, I'm going to try to resist buying any more. Though, I did agree a while ago to do an online pop-up in December! I may even do a small de-stash on Poshmark (which -- BTW -- if you'd like to sign up -- you can use my code NYRLS to get $5!)

Do you Roe? What are your thoughts on the clothing and the company in general? I have stayed away from most MLM stuff until now, but I definitely went all in with this one. Hmmm.

Mommy Style: 1 Shirt, 5 Ways

>> Friday, September 9, 2016

So, I'm planning a new post on mommy style to put on this blog soon. In three words: Flowing shirts + leggings. (I just bought a pair in Volcanic Rose.) BUT! I was looking back through some of my old Writing Chapter Three posts, and I came across a few that I thought would be fun to share again. This is one of them -- about, yes, mommy style.

I bought a new flannel shirt two years ago from Target for a whopping $22 (just my price!). Here's 5 ways I styled it. Number two sort of totally makes me cringe. I'm obviously not an authority on this topic -- but I love to share what I wear (and see what others are wearing, too!). It's funny to look back on what you considered looking good a few years later, eh?

The good thing about the shirt is that it can be dressed up or down -- and it sort of feels like I’m wearing pajamas. I followed my “rule” of buying 1-2 sizes up (this time I got a large when I normally go with mediums) because I like a roomy fit for layering.

Some notes:

// Style #1 is most representative of my everyday look. Including the wrinkle on the shirt. I just wish I could find a pair of jeans that fits this well and doesn't have holes. Sigh.

// Socks with Birkenstocks are very comfortable and warm. No, really. If you’re reluctant to jump on this trend, consider how long these shoes last. I had my pair from high school through my mid-20s. Also: Keep an eye on the sales. I got my Milanos over the summer on Amazon when they were on a reduction for less than $50.

// On the Hunter boots. Yes. I gave in after Christmas last year (on a super clearance locally only on this color, which I’d rather have been less flashy), but I’ve been surprised how useful these boots have been. In this example, they’re purely for look, but I’ve been wearing them to do yard work, trudge through mud at my photo-shoots + at the park with Ada.

// Most of the rest of these clothes are thrifted, purchased on ThredUp, or found for less than $10. ETA: I also really love Poshmark these days!

// And -- yeah, I know that leggings aren’t technically pants, but when you’re around the house and just dropping off/picking up from preschool, I don’t think it matters much.

Did you buy anything new for this season?

What’s your criteria?

So, that's the end of this old post. What do you think? Do you want to hear more about my CURRENT mommy-style? I'll be back with a post like that next week. For now, happy Friday!

Friday Things

>> Friday, September 2, 2016

Somehow -- I don't know how -- but we got both girls napping at the same time. (I know I said we ended naps for Ada, but if we're around, sometimes she'll take a snooze.) Anyway, I wanted to hop on and just share a few fun things I've discovered lately. I miss these kinds of posts and hope to bring them back regularly!

// 1: I need to do more strength training. Enter Kettletoning! This workout is a blend of yoga and toning exercises using kettlebells! I have a 10 pound kettlebell and a 30 pound kettlebell. I'd like to get a 15 or 20 pound kettlebell for this kind of work.

I did this video yesterday in my garage. Feel the burn!

// 2: Holy leggings. I plan to do a dedicated mommy style post soon, but I'm really into leggings. Which means I am really into LuLaRoe. Which means I need to watch my wallet. I actually came across these paisley beauties on Amazon of all places . . . and they're only $12. PLUS, they feel like exactly the same material AND ship PRIME.

They are "one size" and if you're familiar with OS from LuLaRoe, I'd say I'd fit between a OS (0-10) and TC (12-22) in that brand. These leggings in one size are actually perfect for me because I feel like they'd be best for sizes 4-12. I fall around a size 6-8 these days and am just about 5'7".

My top five print picks:

// 3: I want to start using the slow cooker more, and I think I'll try out some Ethiopian recipes. (Some of our favorite farmers market food is Ethiopian, and I'd love to figure it out!) To start, I think we'll make this 1-Day Flatbread or Injera. You just need teff flour, baking powder, salt, water, and time.

// 4: Stranger Things. If you haven't caught this show yet on Netflix -- do it. Now. This weekend is the perfect time to binge watch. It's Stephen King-inspired, has tons of awesome synth music, and you'll think the star -- Eleven -- is the most adorable (and powerful) girl ever!

// 5: Our new favorite app is called My Singing Monsters. And I mean OUR because I think Stephen and I like playing it as much as Ada does. You'll get all the songs and beats stuck in your head and it's FREE as the wind. Check it out.

// 6: Otherwise, I've been listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers basically all the time lately.

// 7: Have any of you tried this Magic Sleepsuit? Eloise is nearing the next stage of sleeping (sans swaddle), but I think she needs something to help dull her startle reflex. We kept Ada swaddled for a long time, but Eloise isn't a fan of it and fights and fights and fights. I know eventually we have to just wean her off it, but figured that might be a good solution in the meantime?

Alright, everyone. Apparently nap time is over. It was a nice 30 minutes while it lasted.

HAPPY FRIDAY!

PinkBlush Maternity + $75 Giveaway

>> Tuesday, March 1, 2016

Did you guys see my 23 week update? I dressed up for my bump shot. With a little help, that is. PinkBlush Maternity -- a small family owned and operated company -- recently contacted me to see if I wanted to check out some of their cute maternity clothes for growing bumps. Ummmm. Yes, please. I need fashion help like crazy these days.

I haven't invested in much clothing this time around because I'm mostly home and don't fit in anything from Ada's pregnancy, so it was a treat thinking about how to look nice in my current body for a change. I wore this Navy Blue + Floral Chiffon maternity dress out to brunch and a movie with Stephen Sunday morning, and I felt like a real lady in it.

Photos!

I love the cut and print of this dress. Like I said, I feel really pretty in it -- even though my roots are looking wicked awful these days and my body is somewhat unrecognizable to me. The fabric is a great weight for transitioning from spring into summer. I chose a size medium, and I'd say that the sizing is right on with what I would expect. Just a bit roomy so I have space to fill up the belly until June.

So, if you're looking for some trendy maternity clothes, check out PinkBlush. They are running a 25 percent off sitewide sale right now using the code SPRINGISHERE. Not pregnant? They also offer a ton of cute and affordable clothing options for women, plus sizes, nursing women, babies, accessories, and more.

// GIVEAWAY

Now is your chance to browse PinkBlush for yourself! Leave a comment below with the words "I'm Blushing!" to be entered for a giveaway that will earn you a $75 gift card. Make sure you leave some way for me to contact you.

Winner will be chosen via random number generator next Tuesday, March 8th, and you'll receive your gift card within 24 hours via email.

Disclosure: I received a dress from PinkBlush Maternity for review purposes. My opinions are my own.

Back-to-School Style with JCPenney

>> Monday, August 10, 2015

I’ve mentioned it several times before, but Ada is starting universal pre-kindergarten this year. She’ll be in class for 2.5 hours each morning of the week. I honestly cannot believe we’re already enrolled in the public school system. It feels like a huge milestone.

BlogHer recently offered me the opportunity to check out JCPenney for back-to-school clothing. You guys, I had to share this with you. I have a special past with the store specifically in the fall season. I grew up in a small, remote mountain town. The nearest mall is around an hour away on winding back roads. But we had a few local shops for clothing as well as a JCPenney catalog store.

Each year before the start of school, my grandparents would generously offer to buy me new clothes to fit my ever-lengthening limbs. So, I’d leaf through the thick catalog and dream up outfits. I’d get all psyched up for school in the process. (And I’d get to do the same thing at Christmas with clothing and toys -- oh, how I’d look forward to that huge catalog.)

I’m sure you can imagine that as I shopped for Ada’s clothing I had a major flashback. This time, though, I was able to conveniently grab everything online. Heading to the store with an almost 4-year-old isn’t exactly my cup of tea. I easily clicked through all the options, Ada by my side, and we selected her school wardrobe together. I’m hoping it might be a tradition of sorts. It was fun seeing her express herself through style. Even at her young age, she definitely has likes and dislikes.

Here are a few outfits:

I was really impressed with the selection of quality clothing I was able to find on the site. (Her backpack is also so adorable when she’s not chewing the straps!) Ada is now in a 4T and even fitting some 5s! She’s a tall girl, that’s for sure. My favorite brands include Carters, Okie Dokie, Oshkosh B’gosh, and Levi’s. I tried to stick with clothing in a similar color palette so we can mix and match on busy mornings.

In my search, I noticed that JCPenney features a lot of cool trends including athleisure (casual + sporty clothing). This is particularly great for kids who play sports and engage in other active extracurriculars (or just hang around the playground). For example, I got Ada her first pair of "running tights” that also look adorable with a lot of her regular shirts.

I also see that the store carries a variety of dance and gymnastics clothing. That should come in handy since Ada is going to start either ballet or tap/jazz combo in September. Does your child wear a uniform to school? There’s a huge selection of those as well!

Of everything, I was most impressed with the prices. The majority of the clothing I picked out was already on sale. Then there was an additional 25 to 30 percent off store-wide the day I hit “submit” on my order. JCPenney is known for having good sales, so keep your eyes peeled for them!

Speaking of deals, if you head to the store, you’ll see that JCPenney offers more than just clothing. Check out some of these back-to-school promotions:
  • $10 kids haircuts (grades K-6) through 8/31
  • $29.99 eyeglasses (16 and under) through 9/15
  • Extra 25 percent off with JCP Card or 15 percent with other payment
  • SUPER SATURDAY SALE ($10 off $25) on 8/13 through 8/15

I guess you could say we’re ready for school to start. I’m sure I’ll still need a box of tissues on the first day. Thank you, JCPenney, for this trip down memory lane! Visit the store on FacebookTwitterPinterestInstagramYouTube, and Google+ for the latest on sales and other promotions.

What trends are on your Back-to-School shopping list this fall? Tell me in the comments for a chance to win a $100 JCPenney gift card.

PS: Don’t miss National #ShoutOutDay on 8/12! JCPenney is starting a shout-out movement in hopes of bending the trend of judgement prevalent in schools towards one of positive reinforcement.
JCPenney encourages anyone and everyone to join in on the conversation and hand out shout-outs to their friends, family and followers. Simply use #ShoutOutDay to jump in on the conversation.

Yellow Polka Dot Bikini + GIVEAWAY

>> Thursday, June 6, 2013

So, I know I'm not a fashion blogger. Let's not even pretend. Most of the time, I'm dressed in jean cutoffs and an old t-shirt. (Old, but new to me, because I probably bought it for $2 at Good Will.) I rarely do my hair + makeup either.

But indulge me, please -- and you could win your very own swimsuit!

Like this vintage-inspired bikini:

I know it's hard. Just try to look past my awkward poses -- our neighbor started mowing her lawn mid-"shoot" . . . talk about embarrassing -- and look at the actual bathing suit.

It's from a great active-wear company called Albion, which specializes in women's fitness and swimwear. Basically, it's fashionable workout clothing. Who doesn't want to look good while working up a sweat?

Or while basking, as in this case. The suit is a high-quality blend of nylon + spandex. The cut is flattering, the color is vibrant, and the pattern is fun. And it goes really well with two of my other summer favorites, my gold Ray-Bans and Saltwater sandals.

I love a ton of the vintage-looking suits from this season's collection.

Here's a sneak peek from the Albion website:

And now here's your chance to win a new suit (or something else) for summer. Albion if offering one of you a $100 Gift Card or the same polka dot suit I reviewed. Pretty nice, eh?

Writing Chapter Three was relatively quiet this week due to some technical difficulties. But I did write about our little daredevil's very first emergency room visit (re: battery mention in last week's post) and a funny book for parents called Parenting: Illustrated by Crappy Pictures.

Have a great weekend!

Weekend Things

>> Friday, March 22, 2013

I missed my yoga class Wednesday in an unfortunate incident involving a battery + ER visit. I'll share the story next week -- everything is completely fine, by the way. Still, I needed a good, non-running workout. Jillian Yoga has been great, but I never feel the stretch/relaxation I crave. I treat that DVD more like body weight strength training.

I suppose the relaxation part is hard, too, when a nosy toddler is patting my butt during downward facing dog.

// Yoga: I found it! //
So, yeah. I found the yoga DVD I've been looking for: Ashtanga by Gaiam
It's EXACTLY my old power yoga routine. Not hard, but not for beginners, as the title suggests.

I use a lot of herbs in cooking, but admittedly . . .
It's more experimentation than expert. This chart helps.

// Marathon Plan //
Thanks for your support with my fall marathon decision!
I'm nervous about injury. And some of you have asked . . . I'm being conservative.
I'm hoping to follow Hal Higdon's Novice 2 plan. 4 days running, 1 x-training.

// Food, food, FOOD!!! //
I have SO many new recipes to share with you over the upcoming weeks.
In the meantime, here are my culinary picks on Pinterest, general and gluten-free.

// Watch it //
I've been using Stephen's Garmin 210 for months. I need my own watch.
Trying to choose between the sleek Garmin 10 + newer but $$$ Garmin 610.

// Pandora's Lunchbox //
I happened upon a great piece on "how processed food took over the American meal."
Here's Part 1 (interview w/ Melanie Warner) + Part 2 (truth about soy protein).

// Undecorate //
I don't have the book, but I saw it when I browsed through the home section at B&N this week.
Even just the word "undecorate" got me thinking. It's now my mantra for spring cleaning.

// Pack It Up //
I'm at WAHM/SAHM, and yet I still pack a lunch. Is that weird?
Here are some great packed lunch ideas + a gorgeous bento box gallery.

// Fashion Week //
I was surprised that you guys like my (frugal) fashion picks!
This week, I'm digging striped dresses, colorful canvas totes, and crochet Toms.

// That's Sharp(ie) //
Wow. Sharpie Easter eggs. What could be easier than that?
I love these colorful, naturally dyed eggs, too.

// Technical Note //
I changed the way you visit links on this site in response to suggestions.
Now links open new windows. Please let me know if this works well for you or not.

And the Birthday Celebration Continues . . .

>> Thursday, August 19, 2010

Far from it. My lunch today? Roasted almonds, an Oreo brownie, coconut water, and a peach. I really need to plan better for tomorrow.

So, just a quick lunchtime blog. I seem to have run out of all my saved-up posts! I definitely am looking forward to having a low-key weekend for cooking and baking. And maybe some house projects (like painting our bedroom!). Oh, yeah. And writing posts!!! I have a gazillion ideas for great stuff I want to post for you all. Stephen does, too. In fact, he's thinking of starting a FAQs corner. He's not an expert, but he's got a ton of running experience, he's wicked fast, and he's a fun read.

OK. Yesterday, I ended up spending the rest of my birthday money. I know, I've been 27 for almost a month. I spent some on a new running outfit from the always-fabulous Lululemon (as seen above). I got the Run Speed Short (in black) and the Cool Racerback (in grey). At first, I was nervous about the short-ness of the shorts. But let me tell you -- I put them to the test last night -- absolutely no chaffing, felt great. I would buy more if my budget allowed right now.

You may have noticed I've incorporated yoga poses into each of the posts today. Why? Well, I need to get back into my practice. I'm incredibly tight from marathon training . . . and stretching feels amazing. Thing is: I need a yoga buddy! Yes. I can do it alone, but it's SO MUCH more fun when I have a friend to join me. We'll see about that. I'm planning to join a gym after the marathon because I like to add some variety to my routine. There aren't any fantastic gyms around here, though -- so, wherever I go will have to have some great spinning and yoga classes.

Onto my next self-gift. It's for yoga (so keeping with our theme). We went to Target during my lunch yesterday, and I found this cute yoga mat bag. It's similar to this one, but I can't find the exact color/pattern on their website. The bag is roomier than other bags I've had/seen, so I think I could stash a sweater and pair of Vibrams in there, too.

I love the embroidery detail. It's also slightly padded. I don't really know what benefit that provides for the bag, but it sure feels comfortable.

Last, I picked up some cartons of coconut water.

I'm obsessed with coconut water -- I always mix with either 1/3 to 1/2 coconut water and 1/2 to 2/3 regular tap water. That way, it isn't too sweet. My habit is getting the better of our beverage budget -- so I think I'll order a case on Amazon sometime soon. It's so worth it. It's a hydration like I've never known!

So, that's all for now. I have grand plans for dinner (after a nice and easy 5 mile run). Recipes will abound sooner than you know. Here's a question for you, now: When you get the gift of cash, how do you treat yourself? Do you save? Do you splurge? What do you invest in? One year, I used my X-mas dough to finance my gym membership. Another time, I bought cookware.

For me, the money never lasts. (Hi. My name is Ashley, and I'm a shopaholic.)

Necklace No. 2

>> Monday, November 30, 2009

Today's lunchtime post is all about necklace no. 2 from J. Crew. Again, it was 40 percent off . . . so, I decided to splurge since I've been in love with it since last fall. The rest of the outfit is a mix of old favorites. Including the boots. Which I wear every chance I get. Regular shoes and boots just don't keep me warm enough. And it's FREEZING in my office today.

Here's the necklace detail. It's a bit old-lady, a bit modern, and a bit classic. I'm all about it.

The breakdown:

sweater: the limited via marshall's
jeans: gap
boots: uggs
necklace: j. crew

About Ashley

>> Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Hi! My name is Ashley + I'm the gal behind (never)homemaker. It seems like such a long time since I started writing in this space -- and a lot has changed.

I'm now 35 years old and have three daughters named Ada, Eloise, and Eden. I mention my kids a lot -- and I have a wealth of pregnancy posts on this site. I got pregnant with Ada on our first try and had an uneventful pregnancy (aside from an angry, irritable uterus). For Eloise, it took much longer and I was introduced to the whole TTC world after having three consecutive miscarriages. We're done having babies now, which is a huge shift in life. I still don't know quite how I feel about it.

Otherwise, I used to muse a lot about being a self-made athlete, as I've been an avid runner the last 17+ years, and self-taught vegetarian + vegan cook. These days, you'll find more posts on how I make major parenting decisions, what toys my kids play with the most, why I save money by shopping at Aldi, and lots of wannabe homesteading stuff.

Thanks for stopping by. For more day-to-day life stuff, find me on Instagram.
