Are You a Cat Person? Why or Why Not?

Are you a cat person or a dog person? Or maybe you're an iguana or goat or monkey person. There are lots of animals out there that we gladly take in, am I right? We give them homes and in turn, they provide us with much love. We love them back and make them a part of our families for life. Yes! Many of us can't imagine life without the pattering of paws, even in the middle of the night.

My first pet was a goldfish named Starry. I got him when I was just 5 years old, and it was my biggest responsibility of early childhood to feed him every day. I took my job very seriously, and I so vividly remember taking delight in watching him bob up and down and enjoy the little dried meals -- tasty green pellets -- I would sprinkle in his bowl.

When I was a little older, my parents adopted a cat we named Pumpkin (she wasn't orange, but we got her around Halloween). She was certainly a family fixture for nearly 20 years. It was also my designated job to make sure her food bowl was filled every morning and at night.
And after I graduated college -- when I was truly out on my own for the first time -- I immediately wanted to share my space with a cat. In fact, a mere two weeks after I graduated college, I adopted Scully from the local SPCA. Rivey followed just a couple years later. It was a big decision to expand our feline family, but I'm so glad we did.

These two are thick as thieves.


I think we can all agree that cats are often fiercely independent, and that's what we lovers like about them. They make us work for their love and attention. However, they don't require much in way of gear or even energy. Just some brushing, some play time, and good food to feed their refined appetites. Yes, it seems my common theme with pet ownership is that feeding is of the highest importance.
