Friday Things

>> Friday, September 2, 2016

Somehow -- I don't know how -- but we got both girls napping at the same time. (I know I said we ended naps for Ada, but if we're around, sometimes she'll take a snooze.) Anyway, I wanted to hop on and just share a few fun things I've discovered lately. I miss these kinds of posts and hope to bring them back regularly!

// 1: I need to do more strength training. Enter Kettletoning! This workout is a blend of yoga and toning exercises using kettlebells! I have a 10 pound kettlebell and a 30 pound kettlebell. I'd like to get a 15 or 20 pound kettlebell for this kind of work.

I did this video yesterday in my garage. Feel the burn!

// 2: Holy leggings. I plan to do a dedicated mommy style post soon, but I'm really into leggings. Which means I am really into LuLaRoe. Which means I need to watch my wallet. I actually came across these paisley beauties on Amazon of all places . . . and they're only $12. PLUS, they feel like exactly the same material AND ship PRIME.

They are "one size" and if you're familiar with OS from LuLaRoe, I'd say I'd fit between a OS (0-10) and TC (12-22) in that brand. These leggings in one size are actually perfect for me because I feel like they'd be best for sizes 4-12. I fall around a size 6-8 these days and am just about 5'7".

My top five print picks:

// 3: I want to start using the slow cooker more, and I think I'll try out some Ethiopian recipes. (Some of our favorite farmers market food is Ethiopian, and I'd love to figure it out!) To start, I think we'll make this 1-Day Flatbread or Injera. You just need teff flour, baking powder, salt, water, and time.

// 4: Stranger Things. If you haven't caught this show yet on Netflix -- do it. Now. This weekend is the perfect time to binge watch. It's Stephen King-inspired, has tons of awesome synth music, and you'll think the star -- Eleven -- is the most adorable (and powerful) girl ever!

// 5: Our new favorite app is called My Singing Monsters. And I mean OUR because I think Stephen and I like playing it as much as Ada does. You'll get all the songs and beats stuck in your head and it's FREE as the wind. Check it out.

// 6: Otherwise, I've been listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers basically all the time lately.

// 7: Have any of you tried this Magic Sleepsuit? Eloise is nearing the next stage of sleeping (sans swaddle), but I think she needs something to help dull her startle reflex. We kept Ada swaddled for a long time, but Eloise isn't a fan of it and fights and fights and fights. I know eventually we have to just wean her off it, but figured that might be a good solution in the meantime?

Alright, everyone. Apparently nap time is over. It was a nice 30 minutes while it lasted.

HAPPY FRIDAY!

5-Minute Chocolate Pie + Friday Things

>> Friday, March 18, 2016

I am in love with pies you can process and pour into a pre-made graham cracker crust. It's like instant dessert, but it tastes like it took so much longer to prepare. So, to start your weekend, I thought I'd share the pie I made to celebrate Pi day earlier this week. You can whip this up in mere minutes before dinner or, well, just whenever.

It's sort of healthy, too:

5-MINUTE CHOCOLATE + BLACK BEAN PIE

What you'll need . . .

  • 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can coconut cream, drain any liquid out
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (or to taste)
  • 1 pre-made graham cracker pie crust

Method . . .

  1. Blend together the black beans, coconut cream, and cocoa powder in a food processor.
  2. In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the chocolate chips, stirring continuously.
  3. Add the chocolate to your mixture and blend until well incorporated.
  4. Add the maple syrup, adjusting to your preferred sweetness.
  5. Pour filling into your crust. Let set in the fridge for 1 or more hours.

For a different twist on the no-bake pie, check out this delicious Peanut Butter Pie that uses many of the same ingredients. And if you're curious, kids love this pie even with the black beans inside. At least Ada does, and she's pretty picky, so there's that!

I'm hitting a transition period with blogging right now -- can you tell? Between Ada's new "sleep" habits, Stephen's track coaching schedule (goodbye, evenings + Saturdays till mid-June!), and rounding the corner into the third trimester in a few weeks . . . well, I'm exhausted. I've had to prioritize my work time for my freelancing versus blogging . . . but I'm hoping to get into a better rhythm soon.

I thought I'd do a weekend things post today! It's been quite a while since the last one. So, here's what I've been reading, making, eating, and adding to my shopping + wish lists these days. I have my 24 week pregnancy update written up, too, but I haven't snapped my weekly photo yet -- I'll probably combine week 24 + 25 in this event.

Thanks for your patience! I've been feeling like this:

// Finding Mom-Friends is Like Dating All Over Again -- right?! via HuffPost

// We're planning some backyard work. Mostly we need to enclose the rest of the fence. We want to add a small swing set. And my ultimate goal project is to switch out the window in the living room that faces the space and make it a single patio door. Here are some things (DIY fences, mostly) I've been digging on Pinterest.

// Paleo Chocolate Chip Cookies. I don't follow the lifestyle, but somehow I came across this recipe in my searches. It's REALLY GOOD. Just almond flour, coconut oil, maple syrup (or honey), baking soda, vanilla, salt, and chocolate chips. Everyone in the family is obsessed.

// Favorite Barre3 online workout lately -- 40 Minute Cardio Burst

// What's on my shopping + wish list these days:

// Stop Asking if My 4-year-old has a Girlfriend! via New York Times

// Benedict Cumberbunnies Have Arrived to Haunt Your Easter via Mashable

// How the Reversal of Adult + Child Roles is Hurting Kids via The Atlantic

Weekend Things + Orange Hair Vlog

>> Friday, January 22, 2016

For those of you who are interested in how Overtone color depositing conditioners work, I uploaded a video of when I recently colored my hair orange. So, here’s the deal with the color: It looks rad . . . if you don’t have awful roots like I do (I know I mentioned this the other day). I probably won’t be keeping the color BUT, BUT, BUT -- the products work beautifully and leave my hair shiny and manageable.

Don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel! I’m working to make weekly vlogs in 2016, and I’m always open to your topic ideas, FAQs, and other suggestions.

Everything you need to know is in the video, but here’s a rundown of important info:

  • This stuff is color depositing conditioner, NOT hair dye
  • It is made from safe, chemical-free ingredients
  • Works best on light hair. But EXTREME strength will cast color on all hair.
  • Use gloves unless you want colorful hands.
  • This stuff washes out -- without refreshing -- after about 2 weeks.
  • You can blend colors to get a custom result. They even sell kits of custom colors.
  • Applying on dry hair gives the most vibrant result.
This post isn’t sponsored. Here’s where you can find Overtone. Here’s another post I wrote a while back about My Purple Hair. And here’s yet another post I wrote about how to Dye Your Hair with Henna from LUSH.

Interesting stuff:

// How Canada is adopting Finland’s Famous Baby Boxes (via Upworthy)

// How to do the 5 most popular Bodyweight Moves correctly (via Greatist)

// Love Jessica’s post Fashion Blogging: Game Over because it says so much about what’s wrong with blogging in general today.

// I’m Getting Rid of My Blender, And Here’s Why! (via The Kitchn)

// Spoiler alert: She says all you need is an Immersion Blender + glass jar.

// I have mixed feelings on YHL, but here’s an interesting piece from The New Yorker about if they can ever truly escape the internet.

// Don't have Amazon Prime? I signed up for a FREE 30-Day Trial. And it rocks. Everything 2-day shipping.

// Why are American Women Dying During Childbirth? Freaky read. (via Cosmopolitan)

Vlog + Weekend Things

>> Friday, January 8, 2016

Happy Friday!

My first vlog of the year finally uploaded on my new YouTube Channel (definitely subscribe if you believe I’ll keep up my end of the goal!). I’d love to make this a weekly thing. Possibly on Fridays. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas of vlogs -- some casual like this one and others, like tutorials, that might fit into specific posts.

Also: Thanks for bearing with me while I figure out how to take better video. This one’s a little overexposed.

Here’s a few things I found interesting this week:

// I send my toddler to school outside. You should, too. (via High Country News)

// Teeny house, big lie: Why many are upsizing. (via Globe and Mail)

// Have you guys seen the Instant Pot 7-in-1 programmable electric pressure cooker?! I’m obsessed after my friend shared that she cooked a chili dinner in hers in less than 45 minutes. I might be kicking my old slow cooker to the curb this weekend.

// 5 reasons to leave lettuce out of your salad (via The Kitchn)

// FDA warns against 3-D “keepsake” ultrasounds (via CBS News)

// Here’s an amazing deal on a JA Henckles knife set. 12 pieces for just $96 -- that’s 63% off. We switched to this brand of knives long ago and haven’t looked back.

// Converting regular recipes to vegan recipes (via Mother Earth News)

// Does anyone else have a salt lamp (I have this one)? I use mine almost daily when I do yoga or just need to relax. I can’t describe how that amber glow just melts my worries away. I’m a bit skeptical on the whole air purification part of it, though. Thoughts?

Need to catch up on this week’s posts?

And I remembered one thing I left off our Aldi shopping list for this week. We got 4 avocados with all that food, too. Here’s an older post, but a goodie: What $77 Looks Like at Aldi.

Have a great weekend!

Weekend Things

>> Sunday, October 18, 2015

How are you all doing on this fine Sunday evening? The temps here plummeted so low over the weekend that we actually had snow showers this morning. It’s happening! Winter will soon be upon us. I -- for one -- plan to roll in as many leaf piles as I can before they’re gone.

#1: I am newly obsessed with Fixer Upper. We haven’t had cable since, well, I cannot remember. My mom was always telling me I’d love this show, and then I saw it appear on Netflix. Well, I got extremely excited because I used to follow Joanna’s blog way back in the day. I remember drooling over her farmhouse.

A week and a half in, and I am almost done with the season. Everything is so on point!

#2: We’ve been drinking quite a bit of Pumpkin Hot Chocolate using flax milk and cacao powder. Actually, we just started this tradition on Saturday game night. Started a nice, big fire in the fireplace. We all got into our PJs. Then we played a few games (Candy Land!). It was such a nice way to connect as a family after a long, busy week.

#3: I also bought one of those Himalayan salt lamps (this exact one in all its phallic glory!) that supposedly clean the air. I don’t really know if they work or not. I didn’t buy it really for that purpose. Instead, I’ve been using it daily to help with stress. I turn it on, do some yoga, and the amber glow seriously melts my worries away.

#4: See photo above. Seriously. How do warty gourds make my place feel so cozy?

#5: I have these four gigantic honey crisp apples just begging to be made into something. I’ve been there + done that with pies, tarts, crisps, and applesauce. Any new and fun ideas to share? I can smell them baking as I type this!

#6: Is there anything prettier than this insanely organized laundry nook? Our machines are in the dungeon side of the basement, so I’m not sure if this pin will ever become a reality. But a girl can dream, right?

#7: I may have bought Ada her first violin as a Christmas present this year. They had some on Zulily (event is over -- but it’s just like these ones!) . . . and I decided to get her a 1/8 size to grow into. She’s quite tall and long for her age, so it was the best I could figure for measurements.

Do any of your kids play instruments? We’ve been pecking at the piano. At this stage, I know it will mostly be play (we won’t start her on lessons till she’s a bit older), but she loves my violin so much . . . I cannot wait for her to open that gift!

#8: I have some late fall/early winter homesteading goals that I plan to share this week. Stay tuned for those. First up is making new winter hats for everyone on my Martha Stewart loom.

BOOM!

Weekend Things

>> Friday, September 11, 2015

Hello, friends. I made a tasty vegan Sloppy Joes recipe -- lentils!!! -- last night in our slow cooker. You HAVE to try it. The original looked great, but I beefed up the protein by adding a can of vegetarian refrained beans to the pot. I also made some quick homemade buns and tidied up the open shelving while they baked.

So organized now:

// 1: 9/11

I recently watched The Women Who Wasn’t There and her crazy tale “experiencing" everything that fateful day. Anyway, I still take time each 9/11 to reflect on the day, its mammoth impact, and to send out some good thoughts into the world. PS: Here are 6 Documentaries You Can Stream Right Now to Reflect on 9/11.

// 2: Silhouettes

I’m becoming increasingly fond of silhouettes (which, by the way, I can barely spell!). I’d love to create a gallery wall of them like this in our living room. I even found this awesome tutorial for making your own!

// 3: Fly Bait

We’re dealing with fruit flies all of a sudden over here, which is strange because I’ve been keeping the kitchen cleaner than ever! I’m going to try the apple cider vinegar method to keep them at bay.

// 4: Quick Clean

I’m planning a post on cleaning soon. But sometimes there’s just no time! Here’s a great post with some suggestions on how to get your place at least feel “clean” in a flash. I try to do most of these things daily.

// 5: Do you knit or unravel?

I love this essay (my friend Ellie shared it) by Stephanie Danier titled There are Those Who Knit, and Those Who Unravel.

// 6: Some deals:
// 7: Cider Doughnuts

On the menu this weekend: Smitten Kitchen’s Apple Cider Doughnuts!

// 8: Freezing, Not Forgetting

This is a fantastic article (from 1992!) on Freezing and Cooking Your Garden Vegetables. Freezing is my favorite preservation method because it’s so easy.

Monday Stuff

>> Monday, August 3, 2015

Hey, guys. There’s a lot of catching up I need to do, so rather than write separate posts, I thought I’d do one of my famous mind-dumps. I hope you enjoy. Summer is speeding by, and we’re definitely making the most of our time together. Here’s what we’ve been up to . . .

// 1. This cabinet!

I had no intention on buying a huge antique corner cabinet for the dining room. But I’ve been eyeing one at a local antique shop for over a year. We stopped by the store the other day to look around while we got Scully groomed . . . and I saw that the price was slashed nearly in half. After measuring it 50+ times, we realized it’s almost exactly the height of our ceilings. So, we jumped on it.

I’m seriously in love.

// 2. I’ve started sewing again.

I got into sewing when I was pregnant with Ada, but since I was working full-time, I didn’t fully immerse myself enough in the hobby. In fact, I couldn’t remember how to thread my machine, which is why I haven’t stitched much -- if anything -- together in the last four years. My mom helped me get everything set up, I bought a couple patterns and some new fabric, and I’ve been practicing.

My first “big project” was this Pillowcase Dress for Ada:

// 3. U-pick season treats.

It’s our favorite time of year to head out and pick blueberries and soon apples. I enjoy the warmer weather, but I cannot wait until fall begins. I’ve always said if we could just skip over summer and straight to fall for half the year, I’d be incredibly happy. One of our favorite farms have this darling cafe with the most delicious breads and doughnuts.

There are also farm animals and other things to see. Check out this post for photos from previous visits.

// 4. Summer sandwiches.

We’re on a sandwich kick. Well, I guess we’re always on a sandwich kick. Right now we’re loving toasted Ezekiel bread slathered with vegan mayo and either tempeh bacon or field roast, avocado, tomato, and a slice of swiss. Mustard, of course. Sometimes we’ll spread on some roasted red pepper hummus, too. Oh, and a heaping pile of greens for good measure.

Messy, but good!

PS: I am also excited for fall because that means I’ll be baking bread again. I take a break from that in the summer because of the heat. I make a mean ciabatta . . . so I’m trying to figure out what loaf I want to do next. I’m thinking rye.

Any recipes to share?

// 5. Blonde again.

I dyed my hair again last week. Blonder than the last blonde, and I’m loving it. I don’t think I’ll stay blonde forever, but right now it suits me. I needed a change. I’ve promised myself on my birthday that this year would be different no matter what happens. I have so little control over this baby-making situation despite what TTC forums make me think. It’s time to enjoy (endure?) the ride and get medical help when necessary. Which might be soon if this stuff keeps up.

For now, I’ll play with my hair, exercise moderately and eat good foods, indulge in my favorite activities and treats, and just try to chill out. I’m not going to lie, typing that out is a gazillion times easier than it will be to switch my frame of mind. I completely folded into myself over this stuff last year, and I can’t live life that way anymore.

// 6. Great dad.

Ada doesn’t have any cousins. Instead, she has lots of kids her age that are our cousins’ children. It’s actually turning out to be quite nice. Anyway, some of my cousins were up visiting over the weekend . . . so we got together at the park. There’s this carousel, and Ada always loves riding the big puppy around. Some kid ran right in front of her to get on it, and the biggest, craziest fit ensued.

Stephen swooped right in and talked her down for a good 15 to 20 minutes. We’ve been having some sharing regression lately. Like, she won’t share anything at all. I blame myself or the fact that she doesn’t have a sibling. In actuality, I think it’s a mix of that stuff but also just regular 3 to 4-year-old behavior. Stephen’s a great dad, and it’s be really nice having him home this summer.

Monday Things

>> Monday, July 6, 2015

We had a good weekend, but it was pretty gloomy. Definitely not the typical sort of 4th of July fest we’ve had in the last few years. Still, we managed to get together with friends, hit up a local festival, enjoy an open-air orchestra concert (and make the local news!), eat some great food, and get some stuff done around the house.

#1: I made my famous 5-Minute Picnic Pie, but this time I added some cacao powder (couple tablespoons) for extra flavor. Then I drizzled the top with chocolate and peanut butter and froze the whole thing. I highly recommend making this dessert if you need something tasty in a flash!

#2: Ada’s feeling better, but we have a long way to go with the meds. (Related: Have any of you tried the children’s probiotic Acidophikidz?) Thanks for all your well wishes, suggestions, and experiences with Lyme Disease. Like I said, we are still so frustrated that we never saw a tick even when we were checking. But now we are on high alert and can hopefully prevent this from happening again.

#3: We’re working on protecting the garden (and us!) from deer. So, Stephen is putting netting around the raised bed and we’re getting some quotes on taller fences to keep critters out.

#4: We hadn’t made homemade guacamole in a long, long time. So, when we saw that Aldi’s avocados were wicked cheap this week, we stocked up. My trick for the best texture is using a knife to blend. And that tip for putting pit in the mix? Doesn’t work! But I did a little research and found this method -- it’s all about not letting any air get to your dip.

#5: We’re headed to the beach in a couple weeks. I wanted to share some of the stuff I picked up for our adventure. Gotta love Amazon Prime!
  • I hate being in the sun, so I finally found a beach umbrella by ezShade I think will work great. It has its own sun shield you can move as the sun moves.
  • No, I really hate being in the sun. So, I got a few SPF shirts. One for Stephen from Vapor Apparel in light grey. Another for me, again from Vapor Apparel, in pretty pink. And I got Ada another rash guard by Kanu Surf in coral. I think they’re so worth the investment.
  • Our collection of beach toys + games has dwindled. So, I got Ada a really awesome shovel called Quut Scoppi that doubles as a water funnel and has one of those shaker baskets. I picked up a deck of plastic playing cards for the adults and one of those velcro toss games for the kids.

Ready for the new week? I’m not, but this is Stephen’s last before school is out for summer. I feel like these warm months are going to go by in a flash. Ada and I had a great long weekend in Wellsboro. I’ll write a bit more, but the 10K went pretty well this year despite everything that’s been cutting into training (I finished only about a minute and 20 seconds slower than last year). We are up to a whole lot of nothing this weekend -- and I love it. Too often we load our off time with obligations, trips, and other time-suckers. I mean, don’t get me wrong. Ada’s going through a baby doll phase right now. And I love it. I really didn’t know if she was going to get into them because we’ve had a few in her play room that she’s barely acknowledged for what seems like forever. Anyway, she was playing with baby “Lulu” last night, then all of a sudden she got very serious and said:

“Mommy, the baby needs her mama milk!"

When I ask Ada if she remember drinking mama milk, she says yes. But then sort of goes on to describe what she sees her friends’ baby siblings doing. She thinks it comes out of a mommy’s armpit. Whatever the case, I think it’s adorable to see her playing this way.

I hadn’t planned to write a Weekend Things post this week, but I came across so much good stuff to share. So, here we are. First and foremost, if you’re going to make a dessert this weekend, make these Salted Chocolate Chunk Cookies featured on Smitten Kitchen. My friend Ellie shared this recipe yesterday, and I made it less than five minutes after reading through Deb’s musings.

(For vegans out there, a flax egg -- 1 tablespoon flax meal with 3 tablespoons water -- is a great substitute in this recipe.)

I have already accomplished some stuff from our Spring Bucket List. First, I'm back at running 3-5 miles at a time -- and it feels good. Second: My mother-in-law, Ada, and I planted seeds last weekend. They are living on my dining room table + sprouted up almost immediately! I definitely need to separate out some of the plants to prevent crowding (Ada was a little too enthusiastic with her seed pouring job), but otherwise, I think we’ll get some healthy plants out of this bunch.

Beets, parsnips, spinach, swiss chard, peppers, pumpkins, and a wide variety of herbs.

It’s the weekend -- and Stephen is off for his spring break next week. We had planned to do something more exciting than, well, staying home. However, life sort of moves and shifts us in different directions, right? We’re fortunate to have my mother-in-law staying with us for the whole week so I can rest and recover . . . and maybe sneak out for a few dates. There are some new restaurants I’ve wanted to try, movies I’d love to see. Anything to keep spirits high. I also really want to do some special things for Ada.

I must say, this spring is crawling in slower than ever. I’ve tried being optimistic -- really, I have -- but all this week has been clouds and rain and snow and cold again. I was looking through photos from a couple years ago when we were lounging in our backyard barefoot with Ada on Easter. I feel like this was a lifetime (or more) ago. Crazy.

9/52: Skater Girl + Weekend Things

>> Friday, March 6, 2015

I took Ada roller skating for the first time Wednesday. There’s a little rink on the other side of town, and they have this cute open ride time for small children. You can bring scooters, bikes, etc. -- and they play music and shine black lights. It was just what we needed when preschool was canceled yet again.

Isn’t she the cutest thing ever?

Happy weekend, friends. I’ll be back on Monday with some of our favorite activities to ward off cabin fever. It’s been a long, cold winter -- but we’re finding some fun (and frugal!) stuff to do to keep life interesting indoors. Need the info now?! (I can sympathize. We’re crawling up the walls over here.)

Here’s a tip you can use today: Buy your child an inexpensive magnifying glass. Then set up little adventures or “experiments” that make use of magnification. Or just let them play around with it without any specific activity. Ada’s obsessed.
