Weekend Recap // Mother's Day, etc.

>> Monday, May 14, 2018

Hey, everyone!

Happy belated Mother's Day.

It was a rainy and cold one here, but we packed in a lot of fun stuff this weekend. Stephen had three track meets last week. And Saturday was a long one in the rain. Poor guy. My parents actually came up on Saturday for the afternoon and took us out to eat at our favorite restaurant. It's my dad's birthday today, too, so there's lots to celebrate. I was bummed, though, because the only menu item they were out of was exactly what I planned to get (a quinoa burger). But I made up for it with a huge slice of vegan chocolate peanut butter pie.

Sunday morning we woke up, tossed on some clothes (nothing fancy -- it was laundry day), and drove down the street to our local diner. It's a good spot. Just basic food. We got there before the big rush, thank goodness. I got a chocolate Belgian waffle topped with whipped cream. And I think I ate it in two seconds flat. Ada had made me a little Mother's Day book at school as well as a last-minute hand-drawn card. Stephen also has a tradition of making silly cards using family photos. In mine, he gave me a coupon to take a spa day for myself next weekend.

He also got me tickets to go see A Quiet Place yesterday afternoon (so good). Going to the movies alone is my favorite thing to do since becoming a mom. It's dark, quiet (and THAT movie was INCREDIBLY quiet), and nobody is yelling for me or needing anything.

Perfection.

I also got a nice gift card from my in-laws for Ulta. So, I thought I'd share my Ulta haul. I know it's silly, but I've gotten in the habit of watching haul videos on YouTube. I love seeing what other people buy or use for different products. I'm not a real high-end type of person when it comes to personal care. In fact, I do still make some of my own bath and body stuff. As a result, I was able to get an impressive haul of things I'll be using for months to come.

Anyway, here's what I got:

Soap + Glory is my favorite. This shower gel and lotion set (with loofah) was on clearance for only $10. Score. They were also running a sale of buy 1/get one 40% off for the brand. So, I picked up another container of my favorite face cleansing milk (best smell ever) and my favorite lip gloss (in Rose & Shine).

I had originally planned to get my hair dyed professionally, but I'm going to go it on my own with this L'oreal box dye. I've used this kind a lot in the past with varying results. It's only hair. We'll see how my highlights turn out. I also picked up a hair oil spritz by OGX. It's super light weight and has organ oil. It also smells amazing.

Neutrogena's hyaluronic acid line (especially the foundation!) is doing great things for my skin. So, I picked up some of the Hydro Boost Skin Serum and the Hydro Boost Eye Gel-Cream. Other skin-care stuff I love is a face mist by Mario Badescu. And I couldn't resist getting a lip scrub that smells like my beloved mojitos. Gosh I miss those when the weather is hot.

Last but not least, I picked up some of my favorite NYX eyebrow pencils. I had been buying the Anastasia Brow Wiz for a long time. But I go through so much product, I needed to find a good + cheap alternative. I am really happy with NYX. And to round it out, I got a bath bomb for Ada that has a prize inside. Fun!

Happy Monday. I'll be back soon with more parenting stuff. You guys really liked my post about why I do the things the way I do with parenting. So, I'm hoping to write more around that topic. If you have questions or suggestions, send them my way!

(Note: I'm linking to Amazon because it's the easiest -- but check local stores for better prices. Some of these prices are great and some of them are not. Buyer beware!)

What's In My Makeup "Bag"

>> Friday, January 12, 2018

I love peeking into the lives of others and seeing what they use for their everyday routines. As you know, I keep all my makeup in my rotating organizer. I do use most everything I have, but if I had to pick my 10 MVPs, for travel or something (what's that, again?), here's what I'd choose.

Note: I've provided the Amazon links here for reference. Some of them are good deals, but others are much cheaper at Target or Ulta.

// Neutrogena Hydro Boost Tint -- This foundation feels like a second skin. I haven't had any breakouts, and I think it has the perfect amount of coverage. A bit more than a sheer but not at all heavy like fuller-coverage varieties. #4 Nude works best for my skin tone.

// Soap + Glory Hocus Focus -- This overall illuminator is a game-changer for me. I mix it about half and half with my foundation, and it seriously mutes all my flaws, almost like an Instagram filter. A little goes a long way.

// Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer -- I'll occasionally use this liquid concealer instead of foundation, if I want a more natural look. It's light diffusing, complete coverage, and super light-weight. I use the color medium-light.

// Neutrogena Hydro Boost Concealer -- Again, this product is infused with hydrating hyaluronic acid and it goes on really smooth. It's also cost-friendly. Light works best for my complexion.

// NYX Eyebrow Pencils -- I have mentioned before that I have a touch of trichotillomania, where I rub and pull at my eyebrows. I have lots of weird bald patches as a result. I don't LOVE drawing in my eyebrows, especially so dark, but I feel self-conscious without doing so. Anyway, I've used lots of expensive pencils . . . but with how much I use, I've been loving NYX. I use all different ones in their collection and usually a blend medium and dark browns.

// Soap + Glory Sexy Mother Pucker -- My sister-in-law introduced me to this lip gloss. I love it. It's plumping, so there is a slight tingling, which is weird. But the SMELL! My absolute favorite color is Rose + Shine (very natural and light). If I'm going out, I'll use Plumsup for a bit darker color. Very sheer and shiny.

// Burt's Bees Peppermint Balm -- But my go-to for lips is simply the basic balm by Burt's Bees. I've been using it literally forever. It works far better than any other brand at keeping my lips soft and hydrated.

// NYX Illuminating Sticks -- I use these creams as blush and highlighter, if I'm feeling fancy. Just a bit of Pinkie Dust on the apples of my cheeks. Then Pearl Pink Lace in the corners of my eyes, cheekbone, etc. In general, I love NYX for trying new colors because it's inexpensive and good quality.

// Benefit They're Real Mascara -- This mascara is good at defining and building lashes. I can't say that it blows my mind, but I am always underwhelmed with mascaras. I would say it's my favorite in a long time. I also like Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara.

// NYX Setting Spray (Dewy Finish) -- I'm new to setting sprays, but I picked this one up a few weeks ago at Target. I like it. It does set my makeup while giving me a more natural finish. It also just feels nice to spray on after application.

I'll share my favorite skincare products next week. I have quite a routine going these days, and my skin is looking amazing (at least for me). It's also nice to have a ritual at night and feel like I'm regularly taking time for self-care.

Have a great weekend! It's nearly 60 degrees here right now and is supposed to plummet to -15 this weekend. What in the world?!

Friday Rewind // Ada’s Nursery Tour

>> Friday, August 18, 2017

I was flipping through old photos the other day. I’ll try not to get too down on myself, but I feel like I was so much more together as a mom to Ada than I am to Eloise. I mean, so many factors in our lives have changed. I really should give myself more grace. But . . . we haven’t even finished painting Eloise’s nursery yet. Still, in my photos with Ada at just 11 months, I was dressed in cute dresses with boots, my house was impeccably clean, and Ada was wearing clean + adorable outfits. Everything seemed in place.

Here’s a rewind to September 2012.

(Side note: We still use this exact Woolino sleep sack! Every night!)

Was that real life? Honestly, I cannot remember. I’m sure I was projecting an image more than anything else. But at the same time, I am incapable of even trying to seem this together now. I write this as I type in my pajamas, dirty hair, and I haven’t run in a couple days. I’m definitely having an off week. I feel tired and slightly nervous for the upcoming school and cross country busy season.

Regardless. Five years ago. How times flies. We’ve been through so much since these photos were taken, but they are still a sweet glimpse into the life we used to lead. I hope to snap some photos of Eloise’s nursery soon. Maybe that’s some incentive to finish up the painting.

Happy Friday, friends! Be kind to yourselves.

Introvert's Guide to Holding a Yard Sale

>> Thursday, May 25, 2017

In the last week or so we've had a yard sale, taken two trips to the children's second hand shop, and I've also made my first transaction via a local mom's Facebook sale group. I feel like a superhero of sorts when it comes to getting rid of all the dreaded stuff. Yet, when I think back . . . I thought I got rid of everything last year. You know, the great purge. Why am I doing it again? Obviously I haven't been following my own advice to stop bringing things home. That's not the topic of today's post, though.

Let me tell you about introverts having yard sales. It's a comical situation. I got so wrapped up in the prospect of making cash money from all my things that I hadn't considered the strain it would have on me. And, yes, strain is the right word. Of course, I am being slightly dramatic. But sitting around while random strangers paw through your children's old toys and make small talk is a nightmare scenario in my eyes.

So, here's the setting: Saturday morning, dawn.

I got up early. I had already staged everything in the garage the day before so it would be at the ready. I pulled each makeshift table (these camping cots we've had for eons sure come in handy for lots of things!) out to the driveway and proceeded with marking prices. Most were $1, $5, $10, and even amounts. Pretty easy -- I was ready to go in 10 minutes. But also pretty hard to put a price on things with so much sentimental value and even guilt attached. I digress.

And just like that, it happened. People started slowing their vehicles. Stopping at the foot of the driveway to gawk. To ask questions by shouting out their car windows. Walkers and joggers took notice, too. You know, because that's what people do when they're trolling around for deals. It's part of the game, Ashley.

When people started approaching . . . the conversation I had in my head was sort of like this:

Oh, god.
Here comes this or that person.
Do I look right at him/her?
Should I say hi?
Hm.
Maybe I should just let him/her look around first.
OK. That's the plan.

It would never fail. I'd say an awkward "hello" and nervously giggle.

Inevitably, someone would want to chat or ask a question. It's a social interaction, after all. I don't know what I was expecting. (Maybe next time I'll have a sign that reads: "Please just buy my things in silence.") We had all sorts of people come by. Some of them ended up being people we'd met briefly in the past. Some of them, we learned, do this trash-into-treasures hunt every weekend. And some seem to have crawled out of the woodwork. One woman exclusively clapped to get her 2-year-old son's attention. I think I made a nasty face at this whole thing, and she left in a huff.

I think one of the most uncomfortable parts of the sale, at least to me, is when people wouldn't buy anything. Instead, I feel like they may have come just to look for looking sake. We had primarily baby and little girl things. It was plain as day because the driveway was basically glowing primary colors.

We would have people slowly examine each and every item only to come up to us and say "Well, I don't have a family or any friends with kids. In fact, I have never even met a human child -- so none of this stuff interests me". Thank you. You could have decided that from the road versus slowly stalking that table of brightly colored toys for the last 10 minutes. Have a nice day. Merry Christmas.

I imagine Stephen's account of the sale is different from mine. In short: People were everywhere. People lingered. Drivers honked and waved. Some tried to haggle. Some lonely stragglers had no interest in the sale and simply wanted to talk to someone. In the end, though, I survived to tell the story. And I'll probably do it again sometime. That is, after I get back the mental energy. People zap me out cold.

So what are my tips for introverts who want to hold yard sales?

1. Grab your extroverted partner, if possible. Stephen -- thank god -- was able to take a big shift while I took Ada to gymnastics. He was loving it. He's entertained by people. He genuinely likes chatting with strangers. So, I let him do it while I pretended to clean the garage. Only problem is that he had an appointment during the bulk of the latter half of the sale. So, I was solo for a good chunk.

2. Hold your sale with a friend or neighbor. We were lucky because it was a neighborhood sale, so our friends next door were also outside. I considered them my crutch if I started getting uncomfortable. Actually, the husband is quite like me and retreated to his basement during most of the festivities. (Lucky.) Anyway, at least I had a familiar face to hang with.

3. Set definitive start and end times. Some people hold sales all day weekend long. They sit and sit and sit. I knew that I wanted to be done by 2PM because -- well -- that's what I decided on the spot. So, when I got uncomfortable, I knew that we were getting closer to my somewhat early end time.

4. Consider alternative modes for selling your stuff if you're really uncomfortable with the idea of having people scattered about your lawn. As I mentioned in my intro, I also went to the local children's second hand store. So, we made $165 at the yard sale (by selling only like 5 things!) . . . but we made another $100 at the store. Honestly, if I had started by taking everything to the store, I may have made slightly less . . . but if you consider the time and energy that went into holding a yard sale . . . you have to figure the cost of time.

Have you had a yard sale? Do you love it or hate it? You have to admit that -- no matter what end of the spectrum you're on -- it's an experience.

Past Peak

>> Monday, October 24, 2016

This morning while Ada and I were waiting for the bus, we saw the most incredible rainbow. Many of the leaves have now fallen, but the colors looked amazing next to what's left of the fall foliage. Have you ever seen a rainbow in autumn? I hadn't. Definitely high up there on the experience list. I didn't snap a photo or anything. Some things just need to be experienced in the moment.

As the title suggests, we are now past the peak with all the leaves. Our backyard looked like this before the rainy, cold weekend. Now? Most of these leaves are waiting on the ground to be raked. But it's soggy outside, so I'll wait a while to even think about doing that sort of work.

In other news, the end of fall means the beginning of some home improvement stuff for us. Hooray! Stephen only has a couple weeks left of coaching until track starts in the spring. The outdoors will be calling us far less often when the cold and snow kick in. (Oh, please let there be snow this year. Please!)

And -- YES -- I know how trite shiplap walls have become. Or have been since like 2014. I know, I know. But guess what! We're installing them in our dining room right now (with the hope of extending to the living room by Christmas or so). I am immensely excited for this project. Our home is great for so many reasons, but it doesn't have much inherited character.

Here's the start:

Stephen went out and got everything at Home Depot, but I'm doing most of this project myself. The plywood "planks" are light enough for me to hold myself while I nail. And I'll have to let you know how it goes. So many tutorials instruct people to sand the planks impossibly smooth and to cover all the nail holes with putty.

When I look at the Gaines abode, I like their rustic look much better. Obviously what they have is original and well-worn. But I like to pretend. Plus, it'll be less work. That's always a plus.

See? Nobody was spacing those intricately with a nickel. Nope.

I'm sure shiplap will be the pine paneling of our time. In 40 years, it will look like the equivalent of this living room to all the younger folk. But I don't mind. I think it's fabulous. I can't wait to share the progress as we make our way through the first level.

Are you as obsessed with Fixer Upper as I am?

I know I've brought it up from time to time on this here blog. But the love is real. I bought the journal. I am buying the book. I am looking forward to my nursing sessions so I can catch up on last season. I even plotted a road trip to Waco, TX. I mean, we'll see on that last one. It's quite literally a day away (24 hour drive -- and I don't feel like flying after watching Sully. LOL!).

Hope you're having a great day. I'm off to finish some freelancing work before Eloise wakes from her first nap. More soon!

Our Weekend

>> Monday, September 26, 2016

Happy fall!

I thought I'd check in for a quick hello. Eloise has hit a strange spot in babyhood between the 3-month growth spurt and 4-month sleep regression. She's cranky. Eating way more frequently than she has since the newborn days. (And you all know how much I love breastfeeding around the clock.) She's waking up many times each night as well. It's not my favorite stage so far, and it's pretty draining now that I'm working. But we're trudging through.

Ada's also been really cranky after school now that the routine has set in. In fact, I can't really get her to talk to me during the week unless she's decompressed with some television. She's tired. It's plain and simple, and it's definitely expected, poor girl. Our nights go in such a blur. Stephen's home a bit before 6, we rush dinner, bath, and goodnight by 7:45/8. I feel like I barely see her anymore. Definitely the hardest part of full-time school for me.

Saturday morning, I found myself mulling over how another day in the weekend would be just fabulous. And then I realized that there actually IS another day in the weekend called, well, Saturday. We just tend to have these 6-day work weeks when Stephen is coaching (and I tend to load a lot of my writing onto a weekend afternoon). He loves the gig and we certainly can use the extra money. But you get into the middle of a sports season and realize that you're always going, going, going.

Our family is still very young, and I think this pace of life takes a lot of getting used to. Do you agree? Anyway, Ada and I played together for hours on Saturday. It was a pick-me-up that I think we both needed. She got out the Play-Doh and some plastic horses . . . and we went to town making outfits for them. We had a fashion show. We also started work on a DIY dream catcher to help with some nightmares, but the instructions ended up being pretty difficult to follow. The things you do with an almost 5-year-old. Delightful!

We made the best of the time we did have together as four. We filled up Saturday late afternoon after Stephen's race with all things autumn. The weather has finally cooled off a bit and all those farms are filled with people enjoying food, games, and decorative gourdes. We visited our favorite place a few towns over and plan to go back another day to do the corn maze.

We ate donuts and drank cider. We drove through the country while Eloise napped and gawked at the changing leaves. And I finally got in that 10-miler I've been talking about for the last couple weeks. It feels amazing to run long again. I think I'll try to do it every other week. My body won't permit much more with the lack of sleep I've been getting. So, I'll still call it a win.

On Sunday, we sat in the sun and chatted with our neighbors while the girls played for a few hours. Then we went to a dear friend's 4th birthday party. Eloise napped happily in our friend's arms, giving us an extra hour or so that we didn't think we'd get to spend with everyone. The day grew to a close and it was all about routines again. And then some pretty crappy sleep patterns. But . . . it was enough rest to do the trick.

I caught this post by Mama Natural called Don't Mess With My Family (On Sundays), and it really resonated with me. I don't know if we'll put a big Do Not Disturb sign out in the yard, but I like the idea of taking a day of rest as a family. A Sabbath of sorts. Do any of you guys implement something like this? I'd love to hear what works for you!

Friday Things

>> Friday, September 2, 2016

Somehow -- I don't know how -- but we got both girls napping at the same time. (I know I said we ended naps for Ada, but if we're around, sometimes she'll take a snooze.) Anyway, I wanted to hop on and just share a few fun things I've discovered lately. I miss these kinds of posts and hope to bring them back regularly!

// 1: I need to do more strength training. Enter Kettletoning! This workout is a blend of yoga and toning exercises using kettlebells! I have a 10 pound kettlebell and a 30 pound kettlebell. I'd like to get a 15 or 20 pound kettlebell for this kind of work.

I did this video yesterday in my garage. Feel the burn!

// 2: Holy leggings. I plan to do a dedicated mommy style post soon, but I'm really into leggings. Which means I am really into LuLaRoe. Which means I need to watch my wallet. I actually came across these paisley beauties on Amazon of all places . . . and they're only $12. PLUS, they feel like exactly the same material AND ship PRIME.

They are "one size" and if you're familiar with OS from LuLaRoe, I'd say I'd fit between a OS (0-10) and TC (12-22) in that brand. These leggings in one size are actually perfect for me because I feel like they'd be best for sizes 4-12. I fall around a size 6-8 these days and am just about 5'7".

My top five print picks:

// 3: I want to start using the slow cooker more, and I think I'll try out some Ethiopian recipes. (Some of our favorite farmers market food is Ethiopian, and I'd love to figure it out!) To start, I think we'll make this 1-Day Flatbread or Injera. You just need teff flour, baking powder, salt, water, and time.

// 4: Stranger Things. If you haven't caught this show yet on Netflix -- do it. Now. This weekend is the perfect time to binge watch. It's Stephen King-inspired, has tons of awesome synth music, and you'll think the star -- Eleven -- is the most adorable (and powerful) girl ever!

// 5: Our new favorite app is called My Singing Monsters. And I mean OUR because I think Stephen and I like playing it as much as Ada does. You'll get all the songs and beats stuck in your head and it's FREE as the wind. Check it out.

// 6: Otherwise, I've been listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers basically all the time lately.

// 7: Have any of you tried this Magic Sleepsuit? Eloise is nearing the next stage of sleeping (sans swaddle), but I think she needs something to help dull her startle reflex. We kept Ada swaddled for a long time, but Eloise isn't a fan of it and fights and fights and fights. I know eventually we have to just wean her off it, but figured that might be a good solution in the meantime?

Alright, everyone. Apparently nap time is over. It was a nice 30 minutes while it lasted.

HAPPY FRIDAY!

Lately + Hello Fresh Winner(s)

>> Wednesday, June 8, 2016

Stephen and I went out for what we think might be our last date for a while on Friday night. We hit up a restaurant that has tons of beer on tap and some pretty cool BBQ foods (with tons of vegetarian options). I even got an alcohol-removed malt "beer" beverage because, well, I miss the ritual of it all.

We snapped this photo which has all my friends and family thinking the baby is so low that I will go a.n.y day now. I assure you, though, it's got to be an illusion. Though I carry low to begin with, it's not exactly as intense as this photo makes it seem! (I decided to preregister with the hospital for delivery just in case.)

The next day, when we asked Ada what she'd like to do for a family date, she immediately screamed "Chuck E. Cheese!!!" You're just as surprised as we were! I guess she heard about it from friends and we pass it on the road quite often. So, we sent tons of dollar bills down the token machine and played games. In the end, I think we spent like $30 and she "won" a cheap slinky I could have bought at the dollar store. (Oh, and she broke it already. LOL.)

But she had fun! And I am really good at this game:

The next day, I got pretty crafty. More nesting, I suppose.

I had been seeing all these photos of hospital door hangers, and it gave me the idea to do door hangers in the upstairs hallway for my girls (!!!). We piled in the van and headed to the craft store. Ada helped me pick out the flowers, prints, and ribbons. Then during nap time, I gave myself a ton of burns with the glue gun.

I love how they turned out.

Oh, and today I am also announcing the winner of the Hello Fresh giveaway. I decided to choose TWO winners -- CONGRATS!

Sarah N. says "I would love to try a meal service like this but they are so expensive I haven't been able to justify it. I can see it being useful during an especially busy or stressful time though. The meals look delicious and just a few meals from a service like this might be enough to get my cooking creativity going again and break me out of a dinner rut."

Angie L. says "I have never tried a food service like this, but I'd love to! I'm also pregnant and losing motivation to make and create meals. This would be so helpful!"

I am planning to do a review of last week's box sometime soon -- hopefully tomorrow or Friday. I liked it even better than the first. Some of you were also asking about the size box we get. We do the one for two people versus four and then we do supplement (very little) to make it feed the whole family.

Happy Wednesday!

Oh, Hey!

I'm hitting a transition period with blogging right now -- can you tell? Between Ada's new "sleep" habits, Stephen's track coaching schedule (goodbye, evenings + Saturdays till mid-June!), and rounding the corner into the third trimester in a few weeks . . . well, I'm exhausted. I've had to prioritize my work time for my freelancing versus blogging . . . but I'm hoping to get into a better rhythm soon.

I thought I'd do a weekend things post today! It's been quite a while since the last one. So, here's what I've been reading, making, eating, and adding to my shopping + wish lists these days. I have my 24 week pregnancy update written up, too, but I haven't snapped my weekly photo yet -- I'll probably combine week 24 + 25 in this event.

Thanks for your patience! I've been feeling like this:

// Finding Mom-Friends is Like Dating All Over Again -- right?! via HuffPost

// We're planning some backyard work. Mostly we need to enclose the rest of the fence. We want to add a small swing set. And my ultimate goal project is to switch out the window in the living room that faces the space and make it a single patio door. Here are some things (DIY fences, mostly) I've been digging on Pinterest.

// Paleo Chocolate Chip Cookies. I don't follow the lifestyle, but somehow I came across this recipe in my searches. It's REALLY GOOD. Just almond flour, coconut oil, maple syrup (or honey), baking soda, vanilla, salt, and chocolate chips. Everyone in the family is obsessed.

// Favorite Barre3 online workout lately -- 40 Minute Cardio Burst

// What's on my shopping + wish list these days:

Weekend Things + Orange Hair Vlog

>> Friday, January 22, 2016

For those of you who are interested in how Overtone color depositing conditioners work, I uploaded a video of when I recently colored my hair orange. So, here’s the deal with the color: It looks rad . . . if you don’t have awful roots like I do (I know I mentioned this the other day). I probably won’t be keeping the color BUT, BUT, BUT -- the products work beautifully and leave my hair shiny and manageable.

Don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel! I’m working to make weekly vlogs in 2016, and I’m always open to your topic ideas, FAQs, and other suggestions.

Everything you need to know is in the video, but here’s a rundown of important info:

  • This stuff is color depositing conditioner, NOT hair dye
  • It is made from safe, chemical-free ingredients
  • Works best on light hair. But EXTREME strength will cast color on all hair.
  • Use gloves unless you want colorful hands.
  • This stuff washes out -- without refreshing -- after about 2 weeks.
  • You can blend colors to get a custom result. They even sell kits of custom colors.
  • Applying on dry hair gives the most vibrant result.
This post isn’t sponsored. Here’s where you can find Overtone. Here’s another post I wrote a while back about My Purple Hair. And here’s yet another post I wrote about how to Dye Your Hair with Henna from LUSH.

Interesting stuff:

// How Canada is adopting Finland’s Famous Baby Boxes (via Upworthy)

// How to do the 5 most popular Bodyweight Moves correctly (via Greatist)

// Love Jessica’s post Fashion Blogging: Game Over because it says so much about what’s wrong with blogging in general today.

// I’m Getting Rid of My Blender, And Here’s Why! (via The Kitchn)

// Spoiler alert: She says all you need is an Immersion Blender + glass jar.

// I have mixed feelings on YHL, but here’s an interesting piece from The New Yorker about if they can ever truly escape the internet.

// Don't have Amazon Prime? I signed up for a FREE 30-Day Trial. And it rocks. Everything 2-day shipping.

// Why are American Women Dying During Childbirth? Freaky read. (via Cosmopolitan)

Vlog + Weekend Things

>> Friday, January 8, 2016

Happy Friday!

My first vlog of the year finally uploaded on my new YouTube Channel (definitely subscribe if you believe I’ll keep up my end of the goal!). I’d love to make this a weekly thing. Possibly on Fridays. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas of vlogs -- some casual like this one and others, like tutorials, that might fit into specific posts.

Also: Thanks for bearing with me while I figure out how to take better video. This one’s a little overexposed.

Here’s a few things I found interesting this week:

// I send my toddler to school outside. You should, too. (via High Country News)

// Teeny house, big lie: Why many are upsizing. (via Globe and Mail)

// Have you guys seen the Instant Pot 7-in-1 programmable electric pressure cooker?! I’m obsessed after my friend shared that she cooked a chili dinner in hers in less than 45 minutes. I might be kicking my old slow cooker to the curb this weekend.

// 5 reasons to leave lettuce out of your salad (via The Kitchn)

// FDA warns against 3-D “keepsake” ultrasounds (via CBS News)

// Here’s an amazing deal on a JA Henckles knife set. 12 pieces for just $96 -- that’s 63% off. We switched to this brand of knives long ago and haven’t looked back.

// Converting regular recipes to vegan recipes (via Mother Earth News)

// Does anyone else have a salt lamp (I have this one)? I use mine almost daily when I do yoga or just need to relax. I can’t describe how that amber glow just melts my worries away. I’m a bit skeptical on the whole air purification part of it, though. Thoughts?

Need to catch up on this week’s posts?

And I remembered one thing I left off our Aldi shopping list for this week. We got 4 avocados with all that food, too. Here’s an older post, but a goodie: What $77 Looks Like at Aldi.

Have a great weekend!

Christmas Morning Pancakes

>> Tuesday, December 22, 2015

I’ve been trying the last few years to find or create THE recipe that will be part of our Christmas morning for years to come. This year, I finally figured it out . . . and it’s a good one. I was searching around for a good egg-free pancake recipe. The kind that melt in your mouth, but are oh-so fluffy.

These are IT, guys.

I took the photo with my phone because I’m still in the stage of needing to eat ASAP or I’ll get sick. But progress, right?! Recipes = progress . . . .

CHRISTMAS MORNING KEFIR PANCAKES

Based on this Egg-Free Buttermilk Pancakes recipe.

What you’ll need . . .
  • 2 cups flour (I used a mix of all purpose and wheat pastry)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Pinch salt
  • 2 cups kefir
  • 2 tablespoons coconut milk (or water)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 cup frozen or fresh berries, rinsed well*
  • Mini chocolate chips (optional)

* I used a frozen berry mix with blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries.

Method . . .
  1. Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Then add the kefir, coconut milk, and oil.
  3. Mix until everything is moistened, but it can still be lumpy. Don’t over-mix.
  4. After you rinse your berries (until the water runs clear for the frozen ones!) pat them dry with a tea towel or paper towel. Then gently fold them into the batter.
  5. Cook heaping half cups on medium-high (or so) heat until golden on both sides. Before you flip, sprinkle the mini chocolate chips onto the uncooked side.
  6. Serve with pure maple syrup.

AT&T 2015 Gift Guide + Giveaway

>> Sunday, December 6, 2015

Disclosure: I received product in exchange for this post. All opinions are 100% my own.

Have you ever regifted something? You know what I mean. Like that label maker Dr. Tim Whatley gave to Jerry in Seinfeld? I’m not going to lie. I’m totally guilty. One year for Christmas I was given not one, not two, but THREE fondue pots! (Seriously.) So, if you have received a fondue pot from me, yes. I regifted it to you. Sorry! I hope knowing doesn’t make those melty beer + cheese fondues any less tasty.

I’m writing today in partnership with AT&T to share some presents your friends and family definitely won’t want to regift. Its 12 Days of Giving program is all about the best and brightest way to “mobilize your world for the holidays.”

I’ll be reviewing one of the featured products today, but you can check out AT&T’s 2015 Gift Guide for more ideas! And visit the Holiday Hub for more blog posts, news, and other information.

LG G Pad X 10.1 // Review

I was given the LG G Pad X 10.1 device to review for this post. Talk about a great gift. When I opened the package, I was immediately struck by how wide the screen is in landscape orientation. It’s absolutely perfect for watching movies and television shows (like my favorite: Fixer Upper!). Better yet, it comes with the DIRECTV app that lets you watch shows you DVR, live television, movies, and more.

The system runs all my Google apps, so I’m able to get in a little work on the device on the couch or wherever I find myself. The system is intuitive and easy to use right out of the box. Holds a charge really well, too.

More Specs:
  • 10.1 inch (1920 x 1200 pixels) resolution IPS LCD screen
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.26 GHz quad-core processor
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 32GB of internal storage with microSD expansion card slot
  • Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system
  • 7400 mAh battery 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS
  • 2 megapixel front facing camera and rear 8 megapixel camera
Bottom line: If you’re looking for a gift for your media-crazed loved ones, this one is a winner.

Giveaway + Sweeps

Would you like to win a LG G Pad X 10.1?

Well, here’s your chance: Just leave a comment below telling me something you’ve regifted. Or maybe tell me about something you know you got as a regift. Make sure you leave some way to contact you. This giveaway is only open to US residents.

Want to win other cool stuff? AT&T is hosting the #ATTGiftSweeps Holiday sweepstakes -- 12 days of daily sweepstakes -- running between December 1st and 12th. You'll have a chance to win daily prizes that include fitness wearables, smartphones, tablets, and accessories.

Friday Stuff + Cranberry Applesauce

>> Friday, December 4, 2015

I have all sorts of odds and ends to go over. So, a random post it is. I think I mentioned this recently, but I’d like to get into some video posting (maybe once a week or every other) so I can just talk my way through a lot of this stuff.

Cranberry Applesauce

If you’re looking for a way to give your applesauce a little holiday kick, try adding cranberries. I experimented a bit over Thanksgiving and we ate it so fast, I didn’t get a photo. But it’s easy. Cut up enough apples to nearly fill your slow cooker. (I leave the skins on.) Add a cup of fresh cranberries. Let it cook on high for around 3-4 hours. Then let it cool and blend until smooth (or not -- it’s your choice). It’s sweet and just slightly tart.

We used Honeycrisps. Add a squeeze of lemon juice. Then add a tablespoon or a couple tablespoons of sugar to adjust to your own preferences.

Barre3

I have slowly gotten back into Barre3 again. We don’t have studios around here, so I’m using my online subscription. They have some fun prenatal workouts, though I’d love to see more in the 40-60 minute range. I know I don’t need to switch to those just yet, but I find regular Barre to be pretty intense, so I don’t want to get too crazy. This morning I did the Glow workout (around 40 minutes -- perfect time, if you ask me), and I feel limber and graceful!

My Thoughts on Barre (So Far)

D3 and Group B Strep

I gave like 10,000 vials of blood earlier this week and just got my results. I have really low D, which is at an 11 when it should be at very least a 30. I also tested positive for Group B Strep. I didn’t have any of this stuff with Ada, so I’m definitely feeling defeated and like I’ve done something wrong. Now I have to go on supplements (and I don’t have confidence they’ll raise my levels much) as well as antibiotics for the strep.

Anyone have experience with this? Words of wisdom? My midwife said they are relatively normal issues, but added to everything else we’ve gone through, I feel awful about it.

Survival Video

Have you guys seen the LAPD Active Shooter Video? It’s upsetting to watch, but it gives some valuable tips for how to survive a situation if you ever find yourself in one. I won’t go into the issue in depth, but I get especially upset about the mass shootings ever since one of the deadliest ones happened less than two miles from our old house. You always think these things happen other places, and then it’s in your hometown.

Here’s some stuff I’ve bookmarked or pinned recently and thought you guys might like:

Thanks + Halloween

>> Monday, November 2, 2015

Thank you so much for all your notes of love and support after our pregnancy announcement. As I wrote, I was conflicted about sharing so soon, but when you’ve experienced multiple miscarriages . . . I feel like the taboo about sharing early just changes. At least for me. At this point, we truly need the support either way. My nerves are also on high alert, so it’s hard to keep something like this to myself.

I won’t be launching into full-fledged weekly updates for quite some time. I may not even do them this time around. It’s too early to commit to anything, really. A few of my friends were asking me if I feel more relaxed since our ultrasound went so well. Honestly? The answer is a solid yes/no. It’s a great sign that we’re at least on schedule, but I’m only 6 weeks and 1 day today. I have eons to go, and anything can happen in the first trimester and well beyond.

I’ve learned with pregnancy and TTC to expect the unexpected. To take nothing for granted. To be guarded. With Ada, it was all fun and games. I feel entirely different now, and I wish I could have some of that blissful ignorance back.

In the meantime, we’ll treat each appointment and week like a major milestone. I just started getting some nausea today. I take that as a good sign (though I’ve experienced first hand that sickness doesn’t always mean a healthy pregnancy). I’ve also been quite tired. The time change was especially hard for this reason. Otherwise, I’m counting down the days until my midwife appointment on November 23. I’ll be 9 weeks, and it feels worlds away. My fertility doctor did mention he might be able to get me in for another ultrasound between now + then. I don’t want to be overkill, but I do think the peace of mind would be worth it.

Anyway, today I thought I’d share a couple Halloween photos. We walked down the street to a church trunk-or-treat this year. Ada’s favorite part was the s’mores fire pit. (Mine too!) She was originally a lion, but she ended up being a panda because it was chilly. The panda hoodie was something I was saving for next year, so don’t be surprised if you see it again,

Yes. Those are purple Hunters on a scarecrow. Don’t leave your rain boots out in the hot summer sun. They’ll be cracked and ruined in no time at all. At least I found another way to use them before they go in the trash. Also: Stephen was Scottie Pippen. I don’t even know what my costume was supposed to be. I found the mask for like $2 at RiteAid a half hour before we walked around the neighborhood.

After we visited some houses, we returned home and my in-laws handed out candy with Ada. We had well over 100 kids come in a matter of a couple hours. She was giving two fistfuls to anyone who asked. Then she said “come back tomorrow!!!” Yeah. I think Halloween was a success.

How was your spooky weekend?

Weekend Things

>> Sunday, October 18, 2015

How are you all doing on this fine Sunday evening? The temps here plummeted so low over the weekend that we actually had snow showers this morning. It’s happening! Winter will soon be upon us. I -- for one -- plan to roll in as many leaf piles as I can before they’re gone.

#1: I am newly obsessed with Fixer Upper. We haven’t had cable since, well, I cannot remember. My mom was always telling me I’d love this show, and then I saw it appear on Netflix. Well, I got extremely excited because I used to follow Joanna’s blog way back in the day. I remember drooling over her farmhouse.

A week and a half in, and I am almost done with the season. Everything is so on point!

#2: We’ve been drinking quite a bit of Pumpkin Hot Chocolate using flax milk and cacao powder. Actually, we just started this tradition on Saturday game night. Started a nice, big fire in the fireplace. We all got into our PJs. Then we played a few games (Candy Land!). It was such a nice way to connect as a family after a long, busy week.

#3: I also bought one of those Himalayan salt lamps (this exact one in all its phallic glory!) that supposedly clean the air. I don’t really know if they work or not. I didn’t buy it really for that purpose. Instead, I’ve been using it daily to help with stress. I turn it on, do some yoga, and the amber glow seriously melts my worries away.

#4: See photo above. Seriously. How do warty gourds make my place feel so cozy?

#5: I have these four gigantic honey crisp apples just begging to be made into something. I’ve been there + done that with pies, tarts, crisps, and applesauce. Any new and fun ideas to share? I can smell them baking as I type this!

#6: Is there anything prettier than this insanely organized laundry nook? Our machines are in the dungeon side of the basement, so I’m not sure if this pin will ever become a reality. But a girl can dream, right?

#7: I may have bought Ada her first violin as a Christmas present this year. They had some on Zulily (event is over -- but it’s just like these ones!) . . . and I decided to get her a 1/8 size to grow into. She’s quite tall and long for her age, so it was the best I could figure for measurements.

Do any of your kids play instruments? We’ve been pecking at the piano. At this stage, I know it will mostly be play (we won’t start her on lessons till she’s a bit older), but she loves my violin so much . . . I cannot wait for her to open that gift!

#8: I have some late fall/early winter homesteading goals that I plan to share this week. Stay tuned for those. First up is making new winter hats for everyone on my Martha Stewart loom.

BOOM!

Weekend Scenes // Apple Picking

>> Monday, September 28, 2015

How about that moon, right? We watched the different stages of the lunar eclipse last night, and it was super cool. Then I woke up randomly in the middle of the night and looked outside. I shot straight awake because it was so bright. Whoa. Did anyone else check it out?

Here are some scenes from this year’s apple-picking fun:

I’ll be back soon with some delicious apple recipes. We got 15 pounds in all!

Anyone else go picking this weekend?

Weekend Things

>> Friday, September 11, 2015

Hello, friends. I made a tasty vegan Sloppy Joes recipe -- lentils!!! -- last night in our slow cooker. You HAVE to try it. The original looked great, but I beefed up the protein by adding a can of vegetarian refrained beans to the pot. I also made some quick homemade buns and tidied up the open shelving while they baked.

So organized now:

// 1: 9/11

I recently watched The Women Who Wasn’t There and her crazy tale “experiencing" everything that fateful day. Anyway, I still take time each 9/11 to reflect on the day, its mammoth impact, and to send out some good thoughts into the world. PS: Here are 6 Documentaries You Can Stream Right Now to Reflect on 9/11.

// 2: Silhouettes

I’m becoming increasingly fond of silhouettes (which, by the way, I can barely spell!). I’d love to create a gallery wall of them like this in our living room. I even found this awesome tutorial for making your own!

// 3: Fly Bait

We’re dealing with fruit flies all of a sudden over here, which is strange because I’ve been keeping the kitchen cleaner than ever! I’m going to try the apple cider vinegar method to keep them at bay.

// 4: Quick Clean

I’m planning a post on cleaning soon. But sometimes there’s just no time! Here’s a great post with some suggestions on how to get your place at least feel “clean” in a flash. I try to do most of these things daily.

// 5: Do you knit or unravel?

I love this essay (my friend Ellie shared it) by Stephanie Danier titled There are Those Who Knit, and Those Who Unravel.

// 6: Some deals:
// 7: Cider Doughnuts

On the menu this weekend: Smitten Kitchen’s Apple Cider Doughnuts!

// 8: Freezing, Not Forgetting

This is a fantastic article (from 1992!) on Freezing and Cooking Your Garden Vegetables. Freezing is my favorite preservation method because it’s so easy.

Monday Stuff

>> Monday, August 3, 2015

Hey, guys. There’s a lot of catching up I need to do, so rather than write separate posts, I thought I’d do one of my famous mind-dumps. I hope you enjoy. Summer is speeding by, and we’re definitely making the most of our time together. Here’s what we’ve been up to . . .

// 1. This cabinet!

I had no intention on buying a huge antique corner cabinet for the dining room. But I’ve been eyeing one at a local antique shop for over a year. We stopped by the store the other day to look around while we got Scully groomed . . . and I saw that the price was slashed nearly in half. After measuring it 50+ times, we realized it’s almost exactly the height of our ceilings. So, we jumped on it.

I’m seriously in love.

// 2. I’ve started sewing again.

I got into sewing when I was pregnant with Ada, but since I was working full-time, I didn’t fully immerse myself enough in the hobby. In fact, I couldn’t remember how to thread my machine, which is why I haven’t stitched much -- if anything -- together in the last four years. My mom helped me get everything set up, I bought a couple patterns and some new fabric, and I’ve been practicing.

My first “big project” was this Pillowcase Dress for Ada:

// 3. U-pick season treats.

It’s our favorite time of year to head out and pick blueberries and soon apples. I enjoy the warmer weather, but I cannot wait until fall begins. I’ve always said if we could just skip over summer and straight to fall for half the year, I’d be incredibly happy. One of our favorite farms have this darling cafe with the most delicious breads and doughnuts.

There are also farm animals and other things to see. Check out this post for photos from previous visits.

// 4. Summer sandwiches.

We’re on a sandwich kick. Well, I guess we’re always on a sandwich kick. Right now we’re loving toasted Ezekiel bread slathered with vegan mayo and either tempeh bacon or field roast, avocado, tomato, and a slice of swiss. Mustard, of course. Sometimes we’ll spread on some roasted red pepper hummus, too. Oh, and a heaping pile of greens for good measure.

Messy, but good!

PS: I am also excited for fall because that means I’ll be baking bread again. I take a break from that in the summer because of the heat. I make a mean ciabatta . . . so I’m trying to figure out what loaf I want to do next. I’m thinking rye.

Any recipes to share?

// 5. Blonde again.

I dyed my hair again last week. Blonder than the last blonde, and I’m loving it. I don’t think I’ll stay blonde forever, but right now it suits me. I needed a change. I’ve promised myself on my birthday that this year would be different no matter what happens. I have so little control over this baby-making situation despite what TTC forums make me think. It’s time to enjoy (endure?) the ride and get medical help when necessary. Which might be soon if this stuff keeps up.

For now, I’ll play with my hair, exercise moderately and eat good foods, indulge in my favorite activities and treats, and just try to chill out. I’m not going to lie, typing that out is a gazillion times easier than it will be to switch my frame of mind. I completely folded into myself over this stuff last year, and I can’t live life that way anymore.

// 6. Great dad.

Ada doesn’t have any cousins. Instead, she has lots of kids her age that are our cousins’ children. It’s actually turning out to be quite nice. Anyway, some of my cousins were up visiting over the weekend . . . so we got together at the park. There’s this carousel, and Ada always loves riding the big puppy around. Some kid ran right in front of her to get on it, and the biggest, craziest fit ensued.

Stephen swooped right in and talked her down for a good 15 to 20 minutes. We’ve been having some sharing regression lately. Like, she won’t share anything at all. I blame myself or the fact that she doesn’t have a sibling. In actuality, I think it’s a mix of that stuff but also just regular 3 to 4-year-old behavior. Stephen’s a great dad, and it’s be really nice having him home this summer.
