Christmas 2017 // Kid Gifts

>> Tuesday, November 21, 2017

So, what are we getting the girls for Christmas? I actually have all my shopping done for them already. Say what?! You may know that I'm always a late shopper, and I wanted it off my plate early this year. Here is a list of the things they are actually getting or that we already own -- not just stuff I think would be cool and that I don't intend to buy.

// 1: Play Silks

I bought two of Sarah’s enchanted play silks -- one in rainbow and the other in blossom. I love how they could be used for anything from dress-up to fort-making. Open-ended play items are my favorite because they foster so much creativity . . . and they don’t require batteries!

I had alternatively considered buying the girls a set of these polyester play cloths. They’re a bit less expensive but have good reviews. In the end, I got roped in by the fun blend of colors.

// 2: Hanging Pod

As a joint gift from Santa, the girls are getting a hanging pod swing for the basement. I’ve seen these so many places, but I found one that is a cotton canvas on Amazon for just $23. It got good reviews and can hold up to 170 pounds, so anyone in the house can use it. We’re going to hang it in the basement from a beam.

// 3: Play Tent, etc.

As another joint gift, I purchased a new pop-up play tent in the shape of a castle. I like how it's sort of gender-neutral (a lot of them were pink and purple). It's 53' tall, so even Ada will be able to stand inside of it. The best part is that it folds away easily and can be toted around the house because it's so light.

Oh, and I got them this pack of felt crowns to share on their adventures.

// 4: Mermaid Sensory Board

As yet another joined gift, I bought a yard of sequin mermaid fabric and I'm going to make a large sensory board (by fixing it to either a large cork board we have or maybe using a frame) with it so the girls can draw and play. We saw this at a local children's museum, and I immediately thought it would be an awesome idea!

// 5: Plush Toys

Then Ada's getting a stuffed bear made with alpaca fur that we bought at a festival in my hometown.

Eloise is getting a stuffed llama because llamas are her favorite.

// 6: Girl Gifts To Each Other

The girls got each other gifts as well. Ada got Eloise a set of plush donuts (she has a thing with donuts) for the play kitchen. Eloise "got" Ada the game Pie Face. I'm thinking that one will be fun when the whole family is visiting at Christmas.

// 7: Name Puzzle

I got Eloise a personalized name puzzle for her birthday, but it didn’t arrive on time so I saved it for Christmas. I figure this is a nice, heirloom sort of gift. I also just love her name.

// 8: Art Stuff

I love the idea of giving things that the kids will really use, and they always need art supplies. For Eloise, I picked up some of these beeswax crayons. They’re rectangular, so perfect for little hands. I looked through a variety of brands and these seem to get good marks for quality and price.

I am also getting some watercoloring supplies for both girls. A nice big pad of paper and a huge set of colors.

// 9: Magnet Blocks

While we already own these, I highly recommend magnetic blocks of some kind. We’re a Magformers family. I love how they are perfect for big and little hands. We build things with them but also make pictures on the refrigerator. They may be the toy that’s most often picked out of everything in the box.

// 10: Dolls

I bought a cute cloth doll by HABA for Ada years ago . . . and I never gave it to her. I set it aside as a gift for a future child. So, Eloise is getting the doll this year along with a sleep outfit for her. Or him. The one we have is quite androgynous, which is actually kind of nice.

// 11: More Dolls

What’s Ada’s big gift? Well, it’s something I didn’t expect to buy -- but she really (REALLY) wanted it. So, it’ll end up being a joint gift from me and my grandparents (they always give us money). I tracked down one of those Luvabella dolls this summer. I didn’t pay the crazy prices they’re going for now. It’s got AI and crazy robotics stuff going on. Kind of creepy, but she’s obsessed.

This list is almost complete, but there are a couple other items I got second hand that I intend to write about in the next week or two. I have some stocking stuffers I’ll be sure to share in that post as well. I’ll also be back soon with some gift lists for the men and women in your lives. Stephen and I aren’t getting much this year. Our recent furnace repair took care of that for us.

But I hope to post a bit about our Thanksgiving menu tomorrow. Maybe? My kids have been sick. It’s no fun at all. I’ve mostly been focusing on my freelance work, so I do apologize for neglecting the blog.

Happy Tuesday -- I’m off to Ada’s first choir concert!

Note: These are linked to Amazon, so if you purchase through the link I get a (very) small kickback.
Thanks for supporting the blog for all these years!

Winter Goals + Bucket List

>> Wednesday, November 8, 2017

Wow. After I’ve written up everything on my various lists -- it seems like a lot. But, at the same time, we have a lot of the cold weather season ahead of us. It’s easy to curl up under a blanket and just feel despair when it’s dark and dreary. My idea behind coming up with this list is to bring some life and light into the coming months. If we’re feeling stuck as a family, I hope to consult it for inspiration. And maybe it will help spark your own bucket list of sorts!

Here are some general winter activities we want to do:

  • (re-)Institute a Friday family movie night
  • Take a hike in the snow with or without snowshoes
  • Go ice skating
  • Go sledding
  • Decorate inside for the holidays
  • Decorate outdoors for the holidays

  • (FINALLY) make photo albums of the kids/family
  • Get a pedicure
  • Play holiday/folk tunes on my violin/piano
  • Speed-clean the house 3x/week for 1hr/session
  • Start a small get-together with girl friends (trivia night, coffee, etc.)
  • Visit my friend and her new baby (due in December)
  • Finish painting the living room, bedroom, and Eloise’s room
  • Tidy up garage to make a “mudroom” space for coats, hats, etc.
  • Organize the play room/basement to better suit our needs

I’ll be back soon with some holiday gift ideas for kids!

What’s on your winter bucket list this year?

Minimalism // Mother's Day Gifts

>> Friday, May 5, 2017

I see a lot of Mother's Day gift lists popping up across the blogosphere. Seeing as we're trying our best to resist STUFF these days, I thought I'd offer a some alternatives. This is a gift list for mamas who don't want more things cluttering up their spaces. These are somewhat practical or simply sentimental ideas, and I hope you enjoy them!

// 1: Fresh flowers.

They always do the trick. I plucked these guys off the gigantic bushes we have growing in our backyard. Of course, you can always check out your local florist, too.

// 2: Alone time.

Stephen took the girls to dinner last night while I stayed home and painted. It was a glorious 45 minutes of solitude at home that I realized I hadn't had in months. As an introvert, I'd be totally content spending several days by myself. But I won't exactly get that luxury until Eloise is weaned (working on it) and -- well -- I don't really see it happening anytime soon!

So, I'm hoping to get a bit of a longer stretch for Mother's Day this year. I didn't even need to DO anything to enjoy it either. If I get several hours by myself, I'll spend it exercising, taking a long shower (I'm not a bath person), and probably just basking in the silence.

// 3: Nerd stuff.

My gift this year is actually the Ancestry DNA test. No joke! This isn't sponsored either. I've wanted it for ages -- you guys know how I feel about genealogy. I should be receiving the test in a week or so. Then I'll provide a saliva sample and get my results back in six to eight weeks. It's definitely not instant gratification, but it will surely be interesting.

I'll be sure to do a review on this test when I get it. Has anyone tried it? What did you think? I have always been brought up to believe I'm very much German and English, maybe some Welsh. Should be interesting to see the breakdown!

// 4: Family time.

I know I drone on and on about our schedule woes these days. I mean, it's simply draining to wake up Saturday after Saturday and not be able to spend time together. So, getting everyone piled in the van and going to a park or playground or even just staying home for a quiet morning in sounds glorious. To make this one more gift-y, consider making a schedule of events.

Ours might be:
  • Wake up slowly
  • Homemade brunch
  • Take a walk around the neighborhood
  • Visit the story garden
  • Backyard game time while Eloise naps

// 5: Chocolate. And wine. Etc.

The good stuff. And not a box of chocolate or wine. Go pick up the most delicious, decedent chocolate bar and the most special bottle of wine you can find. If your mom (or you) isn't in to these things, cater the search to whatever she likes.

Heck, I'd love a Starbucks gift card!

// 6. Event tickets.

Send your mom (or yourself) to see Hamilton. J/K. Right? We WISH. But you know. I'd love to see the local philharmonic, but I have trouble dropping the bones it'll take to get me a seat. RENT is coming to town this weekend, and I'd love to see that (again -- saw the original cast on Broadway way back). Even if it's just a ticket to a movie -- it's super fun and something that'll make her feel pampered and special.

PS: How cute is this shirt?

// 7: Fitness/club stuff.

I'd love to get even a temporary membership to a local yoga studio. A class or three would be pretty cool. So, if your mom is into spinning or Barre or something, consider giving her a few studio classes. If she's not one to head to the gym or studio, maybe get her a few supplies for working out. Like this swanky water bottle or this BarreAmped Workout DVD.

// 8: Or something else.

Or maybe your mom is like me and wants to refinish her dining room table. Buy her the chalk paint and supplies. Maybe she wants a Braverman backyard this summer. Get her some string lights to illuminate it or a sweet patio umbrella. A newer mama might want a ring sling for the upcoming summer months. You know your mom best. Try to keep it somewhat practical, and you'll avoid the whole random-trinket-on-a-shelf situation.

HAPPY FRIDAY!

DIY Beeswax Ornaments

>> Monday, December 19, 2016

One of my favorite things about the Christmas tree is our wax ornaments we made a few years ago. I wrote about them soon after I made them, but I never quite explained the process. With still a good six days until Santa comes, you surely have enough time to try this out. They make wonderful gift wrapping toppers, too!

Here's some from our collection:

Beeswax Ornaments

What you'll need . . .

  • Beeswax, of course*
  • Old pot and glass bowl (or double boiler)
  • Molds
  • Spray oil
  • Twine or yarn or ribbon
  • Something sharp to poke holes

* Alright, with the beeswax, you can definitely head to your local craft supply store and get it either by the block or in little pellets. Don't forget to take one of those 40% off coupons with you to save on it. The pellets are easier to work with, but we've used block wax with no issue either.

If you think ahead next year, consider heading to a local apiary for wax or ordering some online. I've ordered beeswax on Amazon that I use for ornaments, but also for different DIY things, like natural lotion cubes, zero-plastic food wrap, and 5-minute homemade deodorant.

How to:

// 1: Lay out all your supplies. Wax sets rather quickly, so you'll want to have the molds ready when it's time to pour. Clear out some space in your fridge, too. I liked putting mine in there to cool.

// 2: Fill a pot halfway with some water and place the glass bowl inside the pot to create a double boiler of sorts. Toss in some shaved wax an melt it over medium heat. I never got too detailed with how much wax. I just did a bunch (a pound) and if I didn't need it all, it would cool a bit while I waited for everything to set. I could re-melt it or store again for later use.

// 3: For my ornaments, I used simple candy molds made from plastic. Though I don't think this is the best practice, it got the job done. Some people use Brown Bag Cookie Molds, and they are gorgeous, but expensive. I'd love to find some of these on thrift for the future. I think silicone molds would work out wonderfully (and be easy to take ornaments out of).

In the end, you just need anything to mold. I got creative and used a decorative dish. Whatever you use, you'll want to spritz just the slightest bit of oil on it. At least that is what I did. Not too much or it might affect your end result. But just enough to help the wax slide out/off when it is set.

// 4: So, once your wax is all melted, slowly pour it into the mold (that's on a level, flat surface). It should start cooling right away. Very carefully transfer your molds to the refrigerator and wait a good 10 minutes before taking the ornaments out.

Just FYI -- I've even experimented with adding glitter and other texture to my ornaments (see image below). I've used green rice to make a wreath, etc. It's fun. Play around. My favorite ornament is the one I put very large flakes of hexagonal gold glitter inside of.

// 5: Once they are out of the mold and completely set (you may need to shimmy a bit), poke a hole where you'd like to thread some twine, ribbon, or yarn. You can even use a paper clip in a pinch. Just make sure you're not too close to the edge or it might break off.

// 6: Storage. Once you're done using the ornaments for the year, I like to store them in plastic wrap. They can break, so use care that they don't have pressure placed on them. I read once if your ornaments get a bit cloudy looking, you can quickly blast them with a hair dryer to make them a bit shinier. I haven't tried that trick myself.

So, there you go! It's a bit late, I admit. But -- honestly? I think these ornaments would be a fun activity you could do in the week AFTER Christmas to save until next year. Or even to make for other holidays. I have to say, they're one of my favorite DIY projects to date.

Oh! And they also add this nice, natural scent to the room that goes well with your tree's aroma. You could even put a couple drops of essential oils in them for good measure.

The countdown begins! Have you finished your shopping? There's a couple more days. Don't forget to check out my 2016 gift lists!

Want, Need, Wear, Read // Her

>> Thursday, December 8, 2016

Hey, guys! I'm planning to hop on and give you guys an awesome recipe for slow cooker chili -- with delicata squash -- tomorrow. Before that, though, I thought I'd share the last gift list with you today. This one is for the ladies, and it's about as close to my own personal gift list as I can get (hint, hint, real life family + friends!).

There might be a dining room table on this list, but I'm sticking to it. I mean, that's basically my ultimate want right now. And you might see just how obsessed I am with both Hamilton and Fixer Upper if you keep reading.

Pedestal Dining Table (REALLY!)

NutriBullet (I need to write more about my love for this thing!)

Want, Need, Wear, Read // Him

>> Thursday, December 1, 2016

I decided to save the ladies for last. Today I'm giving you my gift list for men. Men like Stephen, I suppose. I consulted him for items on this list (and for ideas because I have to do my own shopping). I am pretty squared away with what I plan to get him now. And, for the record, I want that LEGO Yellow Submarine for myself!

Enjoy:

Digging Out

>> Monday, November 28, 2016

Whew! What a wild last week or so it's been. The last I updated, we had a glorious snow day full of playing outside, warming up inside, and generally enjoying what's coming this season. And then Tuesday happened. I forget if I wrote about how Eloise just didn't sleep for many days last week. I mean, like no sleep at all, no exaggeration. Monday night was the worst it had been, so I decided in the night I'd take her to the doctor to see if anything was bothering her.

Well, Tuesday morning Ada also woke early screaming about ear pain. So, I ended up making my very first double doctor appointment for both girls. Milestone. The verdict? Both girls had double ear infections. And Ada had pink eye (as a result of her virus, the doctor thinks). We left the appointment with more medicine than you can imagine. I actually had to make a spreadsheet to keep track of all the drops and syrups, none of which seemed to be given in similar amounts at similar time frequencies, etc.

We were feeling a bit better for the day before Thanksgiving, so we drove down to Pennsylvania to be with my family. That only lasted a day because, of course, then I started getting super sick. On our drive back -- in the middle of nowhere PA -- we discovered that our van was hemorrhaging oil. I had a fever. Eloise and Ada both cried for almost two hours in the car. It was definitely a low point in the parenting of two children. There are days when I feel like maybe I am starting to get it . . . and then days when I feel woefully out of control.

We still managed somehow to cook our vegetarian Thanksgiving meal this year:

Anyway, today is the start of a new week. My head is still quite stuffy. I don't have much of a voice. But I'm determined to get back to my working groove AND to get this house in order and to start enjoying the Christmas season. For me, that means decorating the outside of our home, which I did yesterday. Then there's getting the tree up and decking the halls, of course. It's a joyful process and it doesn't last nearly long enough. I look forward to sharing photos!

And speaking of photos, my photographer friend back home took family photos for us before we left town on Thursday. She's amazing. If you're in the Wellsboro area, check out Elizabeth Compton Photography. I should be getting the rest of the photos tonight and hope to share maybe a few more.

Here's a peek:

The location -- having them done in Wellsboro -- is particularly special to me. I love my hometown. I'd move back if I could. But I still have roots there that are deep. It's nice sharing this place with my kids, and I hope to do more of that in the years to come.

I hope you guys are all happy and healthy and had good holidays!

Holiday Plans

>> Friday, November 18, 2016

I know that Thanksgiving follows Ada's birthday in short succession -- at least in theory. But I somehow didn't realize that this time next week, we'll all be in the throws of Black Friday. What are you guys doing for Thanksgiving this year? The last several years have been quiet for us. Our travels one year were even stopped due to a snowstorm, so I'm hoping that won't happen again.

Nom...

This year, we plan to go to my hometown, Wellsboro, PA, for Thanksgiving. I'll be honest: I'm anxious about it. Eloise's sleep arrangements are downright weird right now. I definitely need a dedicated post on it. She sleeps in a moving swing exclusively for her naps and for the first part of her sleep before the dream-feed each night. Then she's in the Rock 'n Play for the rest of the night next to our bed. I had wanted the co-sleeper to work, but her reflux ended up being awful, so I sold it.

So, yeah. We will be staying out of town with her for the first time since July (when she was a sleepy newborn and, though I never did a recap, the trip was not the easiest). And I'm pretty sure I'll need all the coffee to power through not sleeping. For those of you who have followed a while, YES! I am now drinking coffee. Did I just see a pig fly by? Just a single cup each day in the early afternoon. I've needed it, and hazelnut with a splash of unsweetened coconut milk is my favorite.

My family goes out to eat for holidays. That might sound sacrilege to many of you, but it's tradition for me. In fact, I love cooking so much now that I'm older. But I'll tell you something -- I feel at home getting all gussied up and going out to eat with my family. It's fun. The place we went my entire childhood is this gorgeous old hotel in the center of the Main Street area. There'd be a buffet, live piano music, and I'd see many of my friends. Then the family would come to our house and visit for the bulk of the afternoon.

That being said, we'll be returning from our trip on Friday. My brother and his girlfriend will also be coming with us to stay a night or two (so excited!), and I'm hoping that we'll get a fresh-cut Christmas tree from the farm up the road, make some good food, and maybe even go ice skating. There are some shops that are having small business Saturday sales that I want to check out. Most of our Christmas shopping is done, though.

I also want to take a new Christmas photo over the holiday break. You guys know I do all of them with self-timers and such. I don't know how that is going to work with two kids. (One of these days I'd love to schedule real family photos! UPDATE: I DID SCHEDULE SOME WITH A PHOTOGRAPHER FRIEND BACK HOME!!!) We have our outfits picked out, though. That's half of the battle! Now we just need a location, good weather (which -- for me -- means cloudy diffusing of light), and cooperation from the little ones.

Anyway, that's what we have on tap in the coming week or so. What is on your Thanksgiving menu this year? Though we'll be going out to eat, we always do our own dinner of sorts on the weekend. I will be sharing some of the stuff we plan to make early next week!

Happy Friday!

PS: Don't miss this year's gift lists! I'll have the last two up next week as well.

Want, Need, Wear, Read // Baby

>> Wednesday, November 16, 2016

Hope you enjoyed my Gift Guide for Kids yesterday! Today, I'm focusing on all things baby. And most of the things on this list are either what we've bought Eloise for Christmas or what we've requested from others.

We actually already gave Eloise the Rainforest Jumperoo because she needed an activity center like that. Her loot under the tree will be somewhat lean. Funny story: We had purchased another jumper, I assembled it for a good half hour, and then we didn't like how it didn't bounce very much. So, I disassembled, returned it, and we bought this classic one. She lives in it now!

Without further ado, here's the baby gift list:

Want, Need, Wear, Read // Kids

>> Tuesday, November 15, 2016

It's time to start sharing my annual gift lists! This year, I'm going with the whole "something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read" that you have probably seen on almost every blog every written (including my own). The thing is, this gifting philosophy makes sense for so many reasons. It simplifies matters, it resists over-consumption, and it may even help keep your house clutter-free.

Today's list is all for the kids in your life (I'll have another one specifically for baby). So sit back, grab a cup of hot cocoa, and enjoy!

Crafty 4th of July Fun + Aquafresh® Sugar Acid Protection

>> Monday, June 6, 2016

 The Aquafresh brand has compensated me in connection with the statements made in this post.

Fun fact: The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays. Something about the warm weather, fireworks, picnics, and getting together with friends and family outdoors really gets me feeling happy. I also love how you can walk around my neighborhood and smell all those barbecue pits burning with deliciousness. Yeah. The 4th is all about food in my book.

Today's post is in partnership with SheKnows and Aquafresh® toothpaste. As many of you know, I've written about Aquafresh® in the past. What's good? Well, their toothpastes provide Sugar Acid Protection from active fluoride. This protection works to strengthen and shield teeth against sugar acid attacks. You know, the kind you get from everyday foods and drinks. And yes: even from our beloved holiday foods and treats.

The thing is, there are also plenty of ways to celebrate July 4th. So, today I thought I'd share a fun art project you can do with your kids to get everyone in the spirit. I used to do this simple fireworks and/or flowers painting project with my mom when I was a kid - long before I saw it pop up on Pinterest boards.

FIREWORKS/FLOWER STAMP PAINTING

All you need:
  • Scissors
  • Used up paper towel or toilet paper roll
  • Different colors of paint (stick with red, white, and blue = super festive!)
  • Paper plates (to hold paint)
  • Construction or other paper (Black would be great for fireworks!)
  • Glitter or glitter paint (optional)
Ada wanted to make flowers for this post.

So, here they are!

Instructions:
  1. Simply squirt a bit of each type of paint onto a plate. I like to mix different colors together to get a swirl effect with flowers. Paint will likely go everywhere, so make sure you put down some type of vinyl tablecloth or even just a garbage bag.
  2. Adults: Cut the end of the paper towel or toilet paper roll in straight lines. Experiment with going thicker or thinner/longer or shorter for different fireworks or flower shapes. (This would also make a great sun stamp!)
  3. This probably goes without saying, but you fold the cut parts out so they make a fireworks shape.
  4. Then have your child dip the new stamp you've made into the paint and go crazy!
  5. You can decorate your photo with glitter for extra dazzle.

Back to Aquafresh®. Their Multi-Action Whitening toothpaste is all about Sugar Acid Protection through active fluoride to help prevent cavities*.

It has six key benefits in one toothpaste:
  • Cavity Protection
  • Healthy gums*
  • Freshens breath
  • Great taste
  • Whitening*
  • Enamel Strengthening
*With twice daily brushing

Happy 4th! Remember to brush after all your tasty party treats. And if you're interested, you can grab a coupon to try the Multi-Action Whitening toothpaste right here. Visit Aquafresh® toothpaste on Facebook and Twitter.
