Zero Dollar Strength Training

>> Wednesday, June 16, 2010

There are lots of workout DVDs and programs out there designed to build strength. But what all these programs share is the ability to get strong in your own living room. However, with so many out there, it's difficult to choose which one to follow. That's exactly why we stick with the basics. We run, and you all already know that (if not, check out our running tips/tricks page), because it's one of the most efficient ways to burn calories and gain cardiovascular benefits.

Other days we bike, walk, or hike. For strength and stability, we also do yoga. But I'm going to share with you today the programs we both (loosely -- more on that below) follow that are absolutely free, require no equipment . . . and are accessible from your desktop.

I'm sure you've heard about these plans before, and if you haven't -- welcome to the awesomeness. For most, all you need to complete them is yourself. By that I mean they're free. They're simple and empowering (literally and figuratively). And what's what? Yeah -- there are no excuses, then, to not try them out.

  • 100 Push-Ups: An intense, 6-week training program that -- if followed strictly -- should have you doing 100 push-ups at a time.
  • 200 Sit-Ups: Yet another 6-week program that promises at completion you'll be able to do 200 consecutive sit-ups.
  • 200 Squats: You know the drill, 6 weeks to 200 squats in a row!
  • 25 Pull-Ups (Coming Soon!): I'm especially excited about this new edition because I can't do even one pull-up right now. So, stay tuned . . .
OK. I bet some of you are thinking: OMG, I can't even do one single "regular" push-up! How can I get to 100 in only 6 weeks?

Well, what's so cool is that these programs guide you through the increases by making you pay attention to your own fitness level and abilities. Not doing so hot one week? It happens. You can repeat it and hone your current skills. No, you won't get to the ultimate goal in 6 weeks -- but that doesn't matter. You'll get there at your own pace.

You don't need to follow these plans exactly either! I used the push-ups program a year ago and didn't finish. Yup. I quit because I got busy/bored/excuses/excuses. But what it helped me do is develop my own strength training practice -- without the gym. I've regularly done one or two sets of 25 push-ups 4 to 5 days out of the week. But over the past two months, I've worked up to doing 80 push-ups in a row. I do that intense session once a week. On the other 3 to 4 days, I do two sets of 50 or some similar variation. Use these programs as guides. It's the push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and pull-ups (I think they should also add holding a plank position) that matter, not the time frame so much.

So before you shell out cash for some flashy workout DVD or all-the-rage new program, consider checking out these simple methods. I've just started the sit-ups one, and I can only do (comfortably) 30 in a row at this point. OK. I lied. It's 25. Just thinking about doing 200 blows my mind.

After that, I'll continue on to the squats. Also -- if you're new to working out, supplement with walking, jogging, biking (to work, even) and other basic methods of fitness. You'll be surprised at your results after a month -- not only in your muscles, but in your overall fitness and self-image.

Stay Fit and Healthy Always Poster

>> Wednesday, April 14, 2010

To celebrate reaching 900 subscribers (906, actually -- thanks to those of you who subscribed yesterday!), I "designed" a little poster. I have this bad habit of putting the word "little" before things, but in this case, it's true. It's an 8.5 x 11 poster inspired by the Keep Calm and Carry On ones that are everywhere, it seems.

Our message? Stay Fit and Healthy Always.

If you'd like one for your very own, here are the instructions for download and print. (They're easy, I promise.) I'd recommend printing onto a piece of white cardstock using an ink-jet printer. For darker results, a laser printer will do just fine, but I haven't tested it on one.
  1. Visit our Flickr Page and click on this image. Then click the "All Sizes" icon just above the image.
  2. Download the large size of the image (it's the one that will pop up when you click "All Sizes"). Save it onto your desktop or somewhere else you'll easily remember.
  3. Go to the image on your computer, and then choose to print it full page. The poster is only designed for 8.5 x 11 printing, so if you choose to make it larger, it'll be pixel-y.
  4. Pass on this link to family, friends, acquaintances -- anyone you think will dig the message (and enjoy a pretty poster).
I'm planning to frame mine and put it in our office. Just as a reminder of what my ultimate goal is, for example, if I can't finish a run or don't PR or some other "catastrophe." I was thinking about it the other day. And no fitness/diet program fits everyone. We all have different ways we do things, but our goal really is the same: To stay fit and healthy always.

You all know that I'm a vegetarian and I run. But what is YOUR method? How do you work toward this common goal? Just leave us a comment or email us at neverhomemaker@gmail.com.

And if you haven't already -- go check out this month's Blog Love Fest. It's a special edition because we're not only sharing the links in a list this month. We're creating a categorized blogLOVEroll. For all the gooey details, just visit the BLF post.

Everybody's Working for the FREEKEND

>> Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Welcome to part 2 of our budget series (missed part 1? check it out now: The "B" Word: Budget)!
Drumroll please . . . We're happy to announce that along with cutting back on our unbridled spending (on dinners out, clothes, and other un-necessities), we’re challenging ourselves to one weekend per month of no-cost activities. A FREEKEND, if you will. But we don’t want to do it all alone. So that’s why we’re posting about it . . .

The idea behind a FREEKEND really isn't new. It's just a way of enjoying time off without depleting your bank account in the process. And the savings can certainly add up. For example . . . say you go out to dinner & drinks for two on a Friday night for $45 (and that's conservative). Stop to see a movie too? $18 (and that’s without the $10 popcorn)! Saturday gets boring, so you trek to Target or the mall or wherever else and pick up $50 worth of goodies. Then you’re hungry and want to grab a quick lunch. There goes another $20. It adds up quickly to almost $135 dollars.

Now imagine if you cut that out for one weekend, just once a month, for an entire year. That’s an extra $1,600 in your pocket! A fun vacation. A new washer and dryer set. A fluffy couch. Or—if you’re being extra well behaved—a chunk of extra savings in the bank.

But what to do for free? That's the ultimate question. Why not delve into those cookbooks that are collecting dust and make a tasty at-home feast! Invite some friends over for a game night (old school Scrabble or new Mario Party—it's up to you). Go for a hike (like Stephen in the photo above). Host a clothing-swap. Find that tangled mess of yarn you still have left from years ago and knit a scarf. Use some leftover paint to spiff up an old piece of furniture.

Bottom line: get creative, have fun, and spend zero dollars.

How can you join in on the fun?
Follow these easy steps . . .

1.) Once a month, enjoy a crazy fun FREEKEND.
Time period is defined as Friday night through Sunday.

2.) Then blog about it . . . and be sure to let us know. Or post a photo of something you did on Flickr with a little write-up. Don't have a blog? Just email us the info at [neverhomemaker@gmail.com]. If you don't tell us what you did and where we can find more about it, we can't tell the world.

3.) Link to us.
Be sure if you blog or post to include the FREEKEND logo (download it by right-clicking the image above) with a link back to us [neverhomemaker.blogspot.com] so that your readers can see what others are doing too. Note: submissions that don't display logo will not be included in our posting.

4.) Then it's our turn.
We'll post what you send us at some point during the FIRST weekend of every month. So, please send us your submissions by the 30th of each month for consideration.

5.) Have Questions?
Feel free to leave a comment or email us.

To give you some extra time around the holidays, the first FREEKEND fest will be in early January. So put on your thinking caps, go have some good times, and let us know about it by December 30th!
