New Year, New Blog

>> Wednesday, January 2, 2019

Happy 2019, friends! It's been a while. I went to bed at 9:15 on NYE and -- as I shared on Instagram yesterday -- our year kicked off quite tumultuously. But today is a new day. We're back in the normal post-vacation routine again. And I feel ready to write. I'm just not sure that (never)homemaker is the space I want to inhabit anymore. I imagine I'll keep up this site for the recipes, as I consult the archives myself on many occasions. Keep an eye out, though. I have a new blog in the works. I hope to get it going sometime this month. Or if I decide it's an awful idea (or if you tell me it's an awful idea), I reserve the right to change my mind.

I love reading everyone's resolutions or intentions for the new year. I can't say I've had much mental space to give it formal thought. But I am taking this time to multi-task and share what I'd like to work on myself. As I have started jotting this down in my head, it seems like my theme is KINDNESS to myself, my family, and my body.

Kind discipline.

You may or may not be surprised to learn that I scream and shout at my kids. I'm not proud of it. I always pledge to do better. Each night, in fact, I promise myself that I won't yell the next year. And then it seems that I yell more and louder than ever before the next day.

Things in our home feel a bit out of control at the moment. It's the stress of having a newborn combined with the emergence of an insanely stubborn toddler (who has decided after years of good sleep that it's out of fashion) . . . and add in a totally rattled school-aged kid who is very sensitive to noise and commotion.

I've realized that Ada was a really easy toddler. She slept pretty well, had minimal tantrums, and generally went with the flow. Eloise is a whole different story, and I am realizing I have zero skills to help her channel her energy in a different way. So, I watched The Happiest Toddler on the Block yesterday, and already it's helped a bit diffuse a couple situations (and didn't do anything to help others).

I have very limited time and mental space to read. If you were to recommend ONE parenting book, what would it be?

Kind eating and exercise habits

My diet as of late is also out of control. I ate all the bread and sugar over the holidays in the name of breastfeeding hunger. And laziness. And just because I like that stuff and I think it's a common struggle. As I am getting older, I'm finding that my body doesn't rebound as well from a crap diet. I feel hungover the next day after eating poorly (which I define as not having really any fruits or veggies, right? It happened many days last month).

My "diet" for the new year is all about being kind to my body. That means indulging from time to time, but also focusing on eating more healthful, nourishing foods. I will stay vegetarian, but I'd like to ease up on the cheese for a while (it has been making me gassy TMI!) and I need to stop eating SO much white bread, but I cannot give up pizza Fridays or my homemade breads. I'm going to try to make more nutritive treats (chocolate chip cookies made with almond meal and oats instead of flour, for example), too.

I am going to try a couple fads, too. Celery juice in the morning to see what the fuss is about. I'll report back. Plus, I am interested in intermittent fasting after writing an article on the subject last fall. I'm going to experiment lightly with a 14:10 approach.

Exercise time has been difficult to come by as the days have gotten so short and the family demands have shot up. I'd like to run more than I am, but I am setting a goal to hit 15 miles a week. I'd like to add a weekly yoga class to this and maybe a couple short (15 minute) kettlebell sessions.

Kind comparison.

Or, rather, NO comparison. I've fallen into the comparison trap hard these last months. Like, why can't I seem to just chill and go wherever with a newborn like everyone else? As an example, we pulled Eloise from preschool because the baby just wasn't having the pickup/dropoff schedule because it directly conflicted with her naps. But I see moms making it work and I feel lazy or just plain shame. At the same time, I hated paying so much for something that was bringing my stress.

Anyway, I need to stop caring what "Susan" is doing with her family, how much money "Laura" has, or how fit "Tamara" is so soon after baby. When I'm not on social media, I'm much happier in some ways but then feel isolated in others. So, I need to revisit my own head to figure out how much Instagram or Facebook I want to include in my life.

I also want to strengthen my real life relationships. This period of newborn is hard for me because I really like routine and the naps are keeping us home quite often. So I will need to utilize the evenings and weekends to socialize.

That's all I have time to write for now.

Till next time!

Some Changes

>> Wednesday, May 4, 2016

I've received a lot of notes lately about how some content is missing from my sites. Certain pages or entire sections are down. My instagram is also temporarily private. There isn't a glitch, I assure you. And you guys aren't mistaken. I'm in a bit of a transition here, and I'm hoping for your kind support. Over the last year (and, truly, longer), I've started to reevaluate how much I want to share about family happenings on the blog. It started when I stopped writing on Writing Chapter Three, which I've now closed.

And maybe it's not so much the sharing of mere words about everyday life, our budget, and other ramblings . . . but -- instead -- the sheer amount of digital information I was putting out into the web. When I started blogging, I was in my early twenties. It was frontier territory. As time went on, I just kept forging ahead, not really thinking. Now that I'm nearing my mid-thirties, I have grown somewhat uneasy with it all, quite frankly.

I've decided ultimately is that I want to foremost shift away from blogging intimate details about my children. With Ada, I have some regrets about sharing so much. Probably too much. I feel guilt about it. Parenting was a totally new adventure, and I got a lot of support and friendship from putting my words and photos out into the world. I'm feeling more guarded this time around, especially as Ada gets older and our family expands. There's definitely more to all this that I'll cover at length another time.

Today I just wanted to address the transition and explain the bumps in the road -- so we'll just leave it at that for now.

What does this mean? Not terribly much, really, if you aren't digging into the archives. I've already been blogging differently for some time. I'll continue to focus more on my own thoughts and feelings about the situations that we're facing. I will still write about our family, but I won't be sharing nearly as many photos and more mundane details -- that's the kind of stuff (vacation photos, funny things Ada has said, etc.) I can simply share with my family and friends privately.

This isn't to say I want the information and life in this space to be watered down. I still plan to write about all things food, fun, and parenting -- just with a different twist. I may even go through posts from the WCT site and post them on here if they were tutorials or budget-focused, etc. It's all about finding balance, and I appreciate your understanding as I figure it all out!

Thanks again for reading this space. Many of us have grown up together at this point. It's sort of crazy if you think about it. This is just the next stage, because I don't want to stop writing any time soon. If you have thoughts or suggestions, please leave them in the comments!

/ / / / / / / / / / (NEVER)HOMEMAKER \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \

We ran the first major race of "spring" racing season. And we both PRed! Check out our thoughts on the event + I also reviewed a new fuel belt that doesn't bounce when I run -- majorly helpful.

Grocery Budget: $60 average continues

Continuing our #unsponsored review of Aldi shopping for the month. We've been able to stick to a $60 average budget for our food -- and that cuts nearly $200 off what we HAD been spending. Major savings, all while eating some good food. Sample dinners are also featured in this post.

Chocolate Chunk Energy "Cookies"

It's been a while since we shared a homemade energy chunk/bar recipe -- but we love them (and know you do, too!). This mix is one of my favorite to date -- and it's made with mostly Aldi ingredients, so it's also budget-friendly!

Weekend Things

Looking for some meal-spiration this weekend? Check out our 25 TOP RECIPES of 2013! I was surprised what made the list, but also excited to see how much you guys liked certain ones! (Plus a bunch of other fun links for the week.)

We're All Doing This Parenting Thing Right (And Wrong!)

My thoughts on the mommy-wars, which are really irking me lately. Seems like every morning when I log onto my computer, there's a "new" debate (which is really just an old one, re-hashed). When is enough going to be enough?

What's the Deal?

The very best mom + baby + kid deals, all hand-picked for you! Some amazing steals this time around, including 70% off a great unisex windbreaker that's perfect for spring!

House Tour (NEW!)

Our house is going on the market next week, so that means it's FINALLY totally clean + so I could take photos. Check out how much our home has changed since the last tour we did way back in 2009!

Putting My Toddler In School

We're signing Ada up for preschool in the fall. But I need your help! Experienced moms: How many days do you think is best for a young 3-year-old? And other questions . . .

Weekly Digest, no. 1

>> Friday, February 28, 2014

Over the years, I've given you guys some surveys + asked more informal Qs via social media about things I could be doing better or different with my blogging. One of the common requests has been to have a weekly or bi-weekly newsletter with recent posts for those of you who fit blog reading into your breaks at work or just don't have time to keep up.

I explored doing an email newsletter last weekend, but decided I didn't want to spread out everything even more than it already is. You guys are so great to follow me so many places already. Thank you! (Let's be real: Two blogs is surely enough -- and many of you also would like to see them become one, and I promise I'm working on it. It's just hard to figure out from both a content and technical perspective.)

So, here's what we covered this week!

/ / / / / / / / / / (NEVER)HOMEMAKER \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \

Creamy Pesto Avocado Sauce + Cooking Video

A delicious vegetarian recipe (with vegan option) that you can make in just over 5 minutes. We love this spread on pizzas, burgers, eggs, and pretty much anything else. I even put some in my grilled cheese today!

Pinning Some Blame on Spinning

Continuing with sharing my weight loss attempt. I've discovered that the pounds aren't budging, and one of my favorite activities might be to "blame." If so, I'd rather keep my muscle bulk and keep my cadence and spirits high! Stay tuned . . .

Hot Yoga (For Those of Us Who Haven't Tried It Yet)

I FINALLY tried hot yoga (vinyasa flow) and lived to tell you all a tale about it. Check out my many positives and negatives about the experience. I think I'll go back again just to form a solid opinion on if I love it, hate it, or think it's a scam.

10 Favorite (CHEAP!) Grocery Staples + Video

In this video, I cover some of our WINTER essentials. Definitely not everything we eat on a weekly basis, but these ingredients are inexpensive and go far toward all those meals we put on our table morning, noon, and night.

Ada's Mountain // Cabin Fever

Being stuck in our 1,200 sq ft house could spell out doom, especially with a toddler. Here are some things we're doing to stay sane -- along with some fun photos of Ada's favorite indoor climbing activity.

Things Are Looking Up

The results of Ada's MRI and some happy news about how I'm finally letting go of my bad attitude about the last 6 months. It's been a long road, and I'm thrilled everything is going well. I'm ready for brighter days ahead.

5 Easy Ways to Spend Less Money + Video

A few tips and tricks for how we cut our budget on the little things. These are simple tips that almost everyone can employ. And the best part? You can start spending less money TODAY!

Sunday Matinee

Our new favorite weekend activity with Ada has to be our Sunday afternoon matinees. And I'm wondering what YOUR opinion is regarding taking toddlers to the movies. Is there a magic age/milestone?

Fall + Change + Thoughts

>> Saturday, October 12, 2013

I marvel at people who can turn their frustration and anxiety into productive energy. I try my best -- if for no other reason than to keep my sanity -- but I am usually unable to move. Utterly paralyzed. Stephen's one of these super-human creatures and, for example, has run more miles this month than perhaps in any other week of his training. I, on the other hand, didn't even care to count. I know last week's miles could be counted on just one hand.

Life is crazy. Motivation ebbs and flows with each hour, depending on what's going on. And now that we have now passed the biggest hurdle in our current situation and Ada's on the mend, I'm slowly feeling more enticed by these gorgeous fall days. I want to get moving again, in all regards.

I want to reclaim this season.

DNS-ing our half marathon was necessary -- all while being disappointing. I know my energy was focused in the right direction, so I have no regrets. As I've written in the past, though, I need to take care of myself in order to take care of my family. If you've been reading for a long time, you know exercise is important to me. So, it's one area in my life in which I need to move on and find a new goal.

Here are a few goals I'm tossing around:
  • Work up to swimming two miles.
  • Devote 3 days a week to strength.
  • Delve back into yoga practice.
  • Take an adult dance class.
  • Train to run a fast 10K.
  • Work up to running a 20 mile long run for fun.
  • Train for a spring half marathon, 1:40:00 goal.
  • Work up to doing 5 pull-ups.
Cooking and baking are also high up on the list. After a month of vegetarian freezer meals followed by a couple weeks of eating convenience foods, I'm itching to get back into the kitchen. I often revert back to old, tried-and-true favorites. At least that's what I've done the last few years.

Here's what I mean:
  • I'd like to give my overall "diet" a looking over. I often feel this way with the change of seasons. I get in lots of food ruts and would like to add more variety with fruits and especially vegetables.
  • I'd like to eat more vegan meals because it will force me to experiment with new ingredients and methods.
  • I'd like to create healthier desserts before the holiday season, without skimping on deliciousness.
  • I'd like to continue to expand my bread baking -- along with other from-scratch skills.
  • I'd like to create some solid soup recipes. I three in mind, actually, but just haven't had the time to develop them.
  • I'd like to set aside a few hours every Sunday where I spend time creating something purposeful in the kitchen. I used to do this whole "champagne afternoon" thing -- so I think it's the right time of year to start again.
  • I'd also like to start having more meals with friends. I'm thinking potluck style brunches and the like.
As far as the blog goes, ever since I became a mom, I got far less organized about posting and planning. I'm sure if you're a long-time reader, you've noticed. I love writing and sharing bits and pieces from our life with you all. So, I have some goals related to this space as well.
  • Eventually I'd like to re-merge my blogs into one mega-blog. I think I've written about this before. Initially I wanted to separate everything for the benefit of the reader -- many of whom aren't interesting in musings on our family life. Thing is, it is who I am . . . so it's weird to split content. And it's clunky for those of you who like to read both.
  • I've like to get more organized and even have recurring themes or series. Not only for myself to stay motivated and excited to write, but also so readers can know more what to expect on the day to day.
  • I also want to enrich my posts with more personal stories and heart. It's when I inject more of myself and, in turn, learn more about you all that I feel the happiest and most fulfilled in writing.
Anyway, I have been thinking a lot about this blog in my absence from it. This past month has changed me in many ways that I didn't quite expect. It brought me way down low, of course, but I'm climbing back up again. It's a slow process. However, it's oddly nice to have a chance to reevaluate my priorities and the places where I'm expending the most energy.

I hope you are all well, and I look forward to regaining my voice as this new season rolls on!

Thoughts & Giveaway(s)

>> Tuesday, November 27, 2012

I re-read my posts over again from time to time. Lately, what I've come to realize is, well, a lot. So much of this past year has been forced. About getting back into my old shape. Getting back to the things I was doing pre-baby. Chasing the shadow of my former self.

The DSLR-toting marathon runner with (too much) time to do cool stuff. OK. "Cool" might be stretching it. I just feel like I don't identify with the person who could drive 5 hours, go run a PR half marathon in the ADK mountains, then go out beer-tasting at breweries for the rest of the day.

And yet that girl is me. No time to do something mundane as stop and dry my hair even!

Now I feel like I do few things that could be considered interesting beyond our little family of three. Adjustment is hard, but I haven't really minded the change. Catching up on episodes of Homeland while we eat takeout pizza and watch Ada throw blocks across the room is great, too. It just feels so different!

On an intellectual level, this frustrating pursuit of my former life makes little sense to me. Things are different now. I know they are, and I'm actually fine happy. Yes -- it sounds like I'm forcing it -- but I can confidently say that at this stage in my life, I am happy!

In practice, though, I don't feel as great. I feel . . . confused. Stretched thin. Directionless. I suppose I grazed the topic a bit during my New Leaf project. I feel off. There are so many things that have changed in a single year that I think it is completely normal to be a bit lacking in my enthusiasm for all of it happening at once.

Anyway: New Leaf. I have slipped a bit off the track. I knew it'd take more than a couple weeks of change to get at what I really need.

The (abridged) truth is . . .

  • I'm 29 . . . so this is a big year for me before I enter the 30s. I don't know how, but I've been conditioned to think this way. Self-fulfilling prophecy.
  • I'm a mom now and no amount of trying will get things the way they used to be -- mind or body -- nor do I want them that way when I actually stop to think about it.
  • I'm struggling with my weight and fitness. Whereas I used to write up tips and tricks for you all, I'm the one who needs the help now.
  • I work at home now. And some of what is "home" is my job, too. It's changed my identity and level of social interaction in ways I'd like to address.
There are many more things I could go and list. But this post isn't intended to be a TMI look into my confused mind. I don't even know if I want to delve into the long version myself! I wanted to write this today to be honest. To explain what this means for the blog. Because in all of this, blogging has certainly suffered.

I want to shift this blog back to something I feel happy about versus trying to be something I'm not anymore. A place where I feel motivated again instead of lacking.

I think I am going to start writing more about those truths I listed above. Make it more personal versus straight-up recipes and Pinterest-y tips for getting in good treadmill workouts. (Sure, there still be tons of food, too.) However, I think a big focus will be  my journey toward finding who I am NOW.

Along with some posts about getting back into shape. I am not having an easy go of it. I need to spend less time trying to write up ways to get motivated to run and actually go running. (Which I'm off to do soon now that our treadmill is fixed!)

GIVEAWAY

I have more to write about this, but I won't make this too long today. A while ago, a bunch of your filled out a survey about the blog. I never did anything to thank you for your thoughts. Now onto the fun part! The GIVEAWAYS!

Here's what's up for grabs.

  1. A yarn ornament -- handmade by me!
  2. A wreath -- handmade by me!
  3. A batch of Christmas treats (TBD) -- again, made by me!
How to enter? It's less formal than our other giveaways. Simply leave a comment below with the word HAPPY and some way to contact you (whether it be a blog address, email, etc.). I'll be choosing three winners at random on Friday, November 30 via some type of online number generator -- since the old one I used is gone.

Pssst: If you're keeping up with Ada, I posted her 12-month update today -- complete with walking video! -- on Writing Chapter Three.

Introducing . . .

>> Thursday, March 8, 2012

Our new site isn't 100% ready, but it's close enough. I also figured making it live would be incentive to finish it up ASAP. Without further hesitation . . .

Check out Writing Chapter Three. Our life and times as a family. It will be replacing (never home)maker, baby! -- with all sorts of fun posts related to life in general. Stuff like budget, food, parenting, and on and on.

Please note that (never home)maker isn't going anywhere (there was some confusion about it). Everything on www.neverhomemaker.com is staying the same and will be updated just as often. Just expect us to get back in gear with more running and fitness posts. The recipes will continue as well, but expect more of those on the new site.

Alright! Stay tuned for tomorrow's post -- Jogging Stroller 101: 6 weeks to 3 blissful miles.

xoxo,

Ashley, Stephen, & Ada

News and Curried Celery Soup with Mint

>> Monday, February 6, 2012

We're starting a new blog in addition to (never home)maker. It will replace the (never home)maker, baby! blog -- which has chronicled my pregnancy and postpartum period -- with all our family updates. But you'll be happy to learn it won't just be a barrage of baby pictures. It's an opportunity to share our lives in a new way. We had a back-log of reader questions to answer, too. Best of all, it's an opportunity for me to fine-tune my cooking. New recipes (among many other new things) will be a primary focus. And they'll pull ingredients from a streamlined, budget-friendly pantry.

I've also spent more time on the photography, which is an area I admit I've neglected lately. Here's a preview of some things to come:

If you're wondering, the answer is NO. (never home)maker is not going away. Instead, we'll go back to our roots as solely a fitness and exercise blog with related workouts, race recaps, foods (like energy chunks, high-powered smoothies, bars, etc.), and other healthy living tips.

We recognize topics have strayed from our original focus, so we're excited to get things back in order.

Now for a recipe. We threw this soup together out of pure desperation. I had bought mint to make something that required peas . . . only to return home and find we didn't actually have any peas. What I did find was some celery nearing the end of its shelf life in our fridge . . .

CURRIED CELERY SOUP WITH MINT

What you'll need . . .
  • 1-1/2 pounds of celery, washed well and chopped
  • 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 2 large cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons fresh mint, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Method . . .
  1. In a stock pot, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat and add in the garlic. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  2. Add in the chopped celery. Cover for 10 minutes, but continue to stir.
  3. Add the curry and onion powders and sweet potatoes. Cook for 4 minutes.
  4. Then add in the water and soy sauce. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 20 minutes.
  5. Turn off the heat and let the soup cool for 10 minutes. Then toss it into a blender or food processor.
  6. Add the mint and pulse until the soup is smooth.
So, enjoy the soup and please stay tuned for more updates on the new site, which we hope to open in March. If you have any suggestions (like printer-friendly recipes, more vegan recipes, better comments section, etc.), please email us at neverhomemaker [at] gmail [dot] com.

We hope you'll join us!

Hello!

>> Friday, May 13, 2011

Hope you're having a lovely Friday the 13th. I just wanted to hop online quickly to offer a big T.H.A.N.K.Y.O.U for your support during our blog vacation. You've all been so, so great, and we've missed your comments and other day-to-day interactions.

Life's been good.

Yeah. We needed the rest -- that's for sure -- as it's been a crazy couple months. Though it seems that things are continuing on a hectic trend, we'll be happily returning to you all (officially) on Monday.

Till then, have a great weekend . . . and thanks again!

mis·cel·la·ne·ous

>> Friday, December 10, 2010

Dressing for cold weather running can take more effort than the run itself! We've covered it before (How to Suit Up to Set Out), but what it means is some serious layers. Especially now, I find it annoying to have to pile on the spandex -- my knee is still temperamental and my runs have been OK at best.

UGH.

Regardless, I take the time to try. The temps are in the teens and 20s now, sometimes lower. The flakes is flying like crazy. It's super dark outside. But I still live for those moments when my body allows me to run. Even in the ice and snow, I'm out there, slogging along.

I bundle up. And bundle up some more.

I stretch in the ways the PT has instructed me to.

I roll out with The Stick to keep my IT-band happy.

When it doesn't work out, it's OK. I'm starting to enjoy my cross training. For example, this morning I woke up and cranked out an intense sweat session on our spinner bike. And episode of Teen Mom and 45 minutes later . . . I finished up and felt fantastic.

This evening, Stephen and I are headed to the gym to "compete" in the Y's "triathlon." A lot of quotation marks going on here. I write "compete" because the recording of time is on the honor system. I write "triathlon" because it's only 15 minutes of swimming, 15 minutes of indoor biking, and 15 minutes on the treadmill.

DIY RECYCLED GARLAND:

We got a couple emails that said the DIY garland we posted a tutorial for the other day was cool, but difficult to actually see in finished form.

Light box to the rescue!

NEW STUFF ON (never home)maker:
  • If you didn't catch this morning's post, we've added a new commenting feature! Now we can reply to your comments individually. We're psyched about this new gizmo because we've hated our old-school way of responding. So inefficient and impersonal. Anyway, we'd love for you to try it out! Just hop onto neverhomemaker.com and leave us a note!
  • We added a new link to the top bar called LIFE. If you click on it, you'll be transported to a page with our top posts that don't fit into the running and recipes. Some fun stuff in there, so be sure to check it out!
  • We also added a Frequently Asked Questions page last week. There, you'll find all the posts we've done in response to reader questions -- as well as instructions on how you can submit your own!
  • And don't forget: Next week is all about c.o.o.k.i.e.s!!! We're posting 12 of our new favorite holiday dessert recipes. To the tune of the Twelve Days of X-Mas, of course. (Sneak Preview!)

>> Thursday, December 2, 2010

Hey, everyone! Along with completely overhauling our layout and design, we've enhanced several areas of the site for your viewing and reading pleasure. You may have noticed that the links on the top bar have changed.

Let's go through them, shall we?

  • HOME: OK. Bad example. Not much has changed. You just click this link to get back to neverhomemaker.com.

The Early Days

>> Thursday, November 11, 2010

Frustrated doesn't even begin to describe how I'm feeling right now. It's nothing life-critical, but the video we made with the FAQs is . . . just . . . totally . . . GONE. I thought I had stored it safely away in a folder . . . but I actually put it in the WRONG folder that I swiftly threw into my computer's trash can. And I have the settings on my computer set so that trash is automatically deleted.

Time. Energy. Wasted.

We will re-record this weekend, but that means the post we had scheduled for today (the ACTUAL day of our blogiversary) won't go up as planned. But it WILL go up sometime next week. I'll make sure of it. You all asked some great questions -- and though we weren't able to answer them all, we hit on the most frequently asked.

We were even a little charming and funny, too. And we're typically super awkward on camera!

Ah, memories.

I thought it'd be fun to link to our first week of posts. There were quite a few of them, too! We took some from our old blog and added a few new to get this site up and running.
Even the word "overzealous" doesn't adequately describe the way we flooded the internet with posts that first week. What can I say? We were finding our groove. And over time, we've shifted focus to closely align with what comes most naturally to us: Running, Vegan/Vegetarian recipes, Healthy Living, etc.

(So, note to all you bloggers out there: Write what you LIVE. Then, coming up with content is easy!)

Now, those of your long-time readers may remember our monthly Blog Love Fests. The link list tool we used has undergone some changes, so we noticed the other day that all the old lists are -- GASP -- gone! For the Blogiversary, we thought we'd bring it back.

Just click below to enter your NAME, BLOG NAME, and BLOG ADDRESS (see my example for how it should look). Also: If you're reading this post from your favorite feed reader, you'll need to hop onto www.neverhomemaker.com -- the list won't show up unless you're on the site.

From the bottom of our hearts: Thank you for reading our blog. We mean it. That's why there isn't our usual "!" after the statement. Because we're serious, folks. Your comments and emails make our days brighter. And we hope we're able to do the same for you!

Shutterbug Giveaway

>> Wednesday, August 4, 2010

If you've missed our Foodie Photography Series, you can check out Part I and Part II now! Yet another tip for taking great food pictures is to use a colorful and fun background. And this tip isn't just reserved for food photos -- Sherry and John at Young House Love have been snapping adorable shots of their daughter Clara this way -- using a different pretty background for each week of her first year (check out the pics on their Flickr site).

Though our food isn't quite as cute as babies are, we've used the patterned background method ourselves to add spice to the blog. Usually, we just use a pretty plate or trivet. Here are just a few examples:

When I bought this super adorable carrot trivet, I just had to get two. Of course, this means that now YOU -- yes YOU -- have a chance to win it!

Entering isn't hard -- and selection will be at random (using Tara's Random Number Generator). Here's the scoop:

THE GOODS: One (1) cheery carrot-printed trivet perfect for using in your food photography (among other things).
TO ENTER: Leave a comment with the word SHUTTERBUG somewhere in the mix.
IN ADDITION: Tell us your food photography tips and/or stuff you find difficult to shoot.
GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, August 11th at 9:00PM EST
PRIZE SHIPS: USA only.
ALSO: To win, I need your email address -- so please provide it (or your blog link so I can find it -- just some way of contacting you) or, unfortunately, you cannot win.
PS: One entry per email address is allowed. The winners will be selected using Tara's Random Number Generator and announced Thursday (8/12) morning.

How to Photograph Food: Part II

>> Tuesday, August 3, 2010

In Part I of our food photography series, we covered styling food, paying attention to colors and textures, framing, and lighting. Today, I'd like to cover one of the often forgotten steps. Taking process photos -- from start to finish.

Though the end result (that prize-winning pie or sumptuous soup) often steals the show, but I really enjoy looking at the chopping, flipping, blending, measuring, etc. shots. In fact, those photos are my favorite.

Like these, for example:

Taking thoughtful process pictures involves paying attention to five specific aspects of cooking/baking. But sometimes it's difficult to stop and shoot when you're, for example, elbow deep into some pizza dough. So, the next time you find yourself in this situation, stop what you're doing. Wash your hands and pull out your camera.

Then think about the following things:

1.) Ingredients. What I find so fascinating about cooking and baking is how I can turn all different kinds of ingredients into a cohesive dish. Especially in summer, fresh produce is just pouring out of farmers markets -- and it's all gorgeous. Even the most imperfect looking tomatoes have their charm.

Give your fruits, veggies, and other ingredients the glamour shots they deserve. After all, they are what's IN that final meal that you spend so much time putting together. Let them shine on their own. And I'm thinking most of you who read this blog also appreciate knowing exactly what whole foods go into a soup, sandwich, or other recipe you see online.

2.) Tools. There are a multitude of items we use in our kitchens to make our lives easier. From knives, mixers, and juicers to spoons, spatulas, and whisks -- they're all important. And you guessed it! Taking photos of the tools you use makes for good food photography.

Sometimes I like to combine the ingredients and tools and take from-the-top shots. Yeah, it may take a little extra time to set everything up (and make sure your measurements are still correct) -- but some of my favorite photos are taken in this way.

3.) Methods. Here comes the good part. Just like I mentioned above, sometimes you're kneading dough or whisking ingredients in a specific way. Breads, like challah, call for braiding . . . cookies require rolling dough in sugar . . . cakes beg to be drizzled in icing. Whatever the process is, people like to see it. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing -- it's also helpful to newbie cooks learning the ropes.

Of course, some methods are more difficult and/or interesting than others. So, if your dish just requires a quick mix, you may want to skip the shutter-fever. But if you are performing a process that even has you scratching your head, your readers/viewers will more than likely want to see what's up.

If you don't have fancy software to create an animated GIF image (like this guacamole one), consider taking a brief video of what you're doing. Or go old school and group a couple photos in a series to show what you're doing.

4.) Before and After. I like to juxtapose my final product with its individual parts. There's no secret to doing this yourself -- just keep around some remnants (orange peels, leftover pepper chunks, surplus garlic cloves) and stick it next to your creation.

It's as simple as that!

5.) Mess. No one loves a good mess more than I do. Show the good, bad, and UGLY -- and you'll love what you end up with. Here are some of my favorite kitchen fail shots. Anything goes in this category -- including shots of your plate AFTER the meal is consumed by you.

If you missed Part I of our Foodie Photography Series, you can check it out here. And if you have any of your own tips to share -- don't be shy. We'd love to hear 'em. Just leave a comment or email us at neverhomemaker [at] gmail [dot] com.
