Namaste

>> Thursday, December 6, 2012

I've been searching for some exercises I can do on my off days from running. Stuff I can do quickly and quietly while Ada naps. The treadmill is far too loud and right next to her room. The spinning bike is quieter, but I moan and groan from my burning quads.

So, I thought I'd review some TV workouts over the next couple months as I try them out. Last night, I indulged in a new-to-me DVD: Jillian Michaels: Yoga Meltdown. (I actually bought it via this link and play it on our Roku player.)

I've only been through Level 1, but -- for those of you who are unfamiliar -- each workout is 30 minutes (two workouts for a total of 1 hour). It's a sort of bastardized power yoga sequence. I like that it's difficult, yet familiar. All of these same poses were incorporated in my practice many years ago. They're just much harder for me to do now, especially all those chaturangas!

The good: I definitely can use the stretching. With all the lifting of my 20-lb toddler, my back is killing me. It also feels good to change up my routine from running. I can certainly use the balance and strength training. Plus, I can do it whenever I want versus trying to make a yoga class across town.

The bad: I suppose I expected something a bit more unique from this DVD. Don't get me wrong, it's still very good -- but it's very similar to my old power yoga classes. Nothing really new there. Turning that point into good: I only paid $7.99 for the program, which is half the price of one yoga class.

More to come with these types of reviews. If you have any DVDs you think I should check out, I'm wide open for suggestions. I'm looking for strength and stretching, but I'm also interested in cardio-focused stuff. And I'm trying to stay away from anything that requires equipment beyond two hand weights.

MY MUST-READS

I've been asked by several of you what blogs and websites I read on a (semi)daily basis. This list used to be pages long, but I've recently pared down quite a bit because I simply don't have time. Of course, it's always changing, but here we go!

: : : Food : : :

: : : Fitness : : :
No Meat Athlete
Runner's World

: : : Mom-stuff : : :

: : : Home : : :

: : : Laughs : : :

Have any good reads to suggest? Please include books! I desperately need to carve out time to read a good book (I like non-fiction best!).

And if you didn't catch it yesterday, check out Writing Chapter Three for some tips on how to take your own family photos.

Weekend Chores and the Blogging Pants Return!

>> Monday, June 6, 2011

We posted a recipe on SATURDAY. Can you believe it? I just couldn't wait. So, if you're normally not online over the weekend (we stay as far away from the computer as possible!), be sure to check out the Ring-O-Fire Garlic Knots. They'll change your life. Or just fill your tummy.

Weekend stuff was relaxed. Stephen went to a beer festival with his dad and brother in Philadelphia. I stayed behind and had a girly date with my friend Jesslynn. Food, art, walking around -- it was fantastic. Saturday was a bit of a relaxed blur. A 6-miler in the morning. Hanging out with my parents for most of the afternoon. Low, low key. Which is exactly what I needed.

When Stephen returned Sunday, we got to business: Do you remember our office?

That's where we plan to put the nursery. It's been a dumping ground for any baby stuff we're picked up so far (including a crib -- but we're not assembling that quite yet). It's still a mess, but we cleared out most non-baby stuff.

And we need to get Time Warner to come and move our internet connection. That's why you see a pile of computer equipment in the corner. Ick.

When Stephen was home this weekend, his mom sent him back with the rocking chair she had used with both him and his brother. We love how compact it is . . . and though we had first considered sanding/painting it, we may just keep it finished as-is.

Of course, now that I'm totally obsessed with a new hobby, I'll want to sew some cushions!

Where did our desk go? And my guitar/cello/violin? The computer chairs and other stuff? THE EXERCISE ROOM. Which will be our exercise room AND office from now on.

Hooray for small, cluttered spaces?

We had to custom cut the door-desk to make it fit the nook right as you enter the room. But we're loving it. Just need to clean everything up.

So that's what's going on while we make room for the baby. Today I'm 15 weeks -- we still have quite a while. I want to get a jump on things, though, so we'll have time for bigger projects I want to tackle. Like the kitchen.

Now, I must apologize to Faith. You see -- Healthy Ashley had sent me the Blogging Pants a couple months ago. Yeah. We're talking months at this point. We actually received them the day we decided to take our blogging break. I've been holding them hostage ever since.

I took me a while to think of what I'd like to write on them. The task of finding some "encouraging message, affirmation, sentiment of wisdom" seemed difficult with how I've been feeling (overwhelmed) lately.

I ended up writing: "Believe in Yourself. Inspire Others." But then I sort of highlighted so it would also say "Believe in Others. Inspire Yourself." I think it's a totally cyclical relationship of positivity!

So far, the pants have traveled to . . .

Hangry Pants
Chandra
Run, Eat, Repeat!
Healthy Tipping Point
A to Pink
Then Heather Said
Healthy Ashley

And now, they are on their way to Julie of Savvy Eats! I chose Julie because I've met her in real life, and she's a very positive person. I think she'll have something great to write on them to inspire and motivate others.

What did you do this weekend? I'm excited for next because we're hanging out with some of our favorite friends. The weather is supposed to be gorgeous. And, well, I'm a sucker for ANY time off these days. Bring on the week . . . but let's hurry up, weekend!

The ABCs of . . . Me!

>> Tuesday, March 1, 2011

I've seen this survey on many blogs now. So, I thought I'd join in on the fun. It's a nice way to spend part of my lunch hour. I definitely need some mindless activity today.

A. Age: 27 and 7 months.

B. Bed size: Queen. And we only recently got an actual bed frame.

C. Chore you dislike: I dislike most chores. Sometimes, I feel like my whole life is a chore, so when I'm home, I just like to relax. But nothing is worse than cleaning the litter box for our two cats. Ick!

D. Dogs: We have cats, not dogs (as mentioned above). Though, I'm not opposed to adding another fur friend to the family when we have more space.

E. Essential start to your day: I'm not a coffee person. I don't usually exercise in the morning. I don't read the newspaper first thing. I guess my morning shower? My hair is a grease pit. No, really. It's BAD. So it's definitely essential that I wash it before offending others.

F. Favorite color: This one's tricky, as it's always changing. Right now: deep teal. I always go back to combinations of blue/green.

G. Gold or silver: White gold. Silver tarnishes -- and that's no fun. If we're talking jewelry, though, I typically like stones/beads more than chains, etc.

H. Height: 5'6" and a half (or so). I wear slight wedges most of the time, so I appear to be more like 5'7" :)

I. Instruments you play(ed): Here we go . . . saxophone(s), trumpet, guitar, violin, flute, clarinet, valve trombone, euphonium, piano, various percussion, and a bit of cello. I also sing. I feel like I'm forgetting something.

Generally, if it can be played, I can find a way to play it somewhat well in an afternoon.

J. Job title: Administrative Assistant to the Dean. Whatever that means.

K. Kids: Not yet. But we do want kids someday -- probably 2 (max).

L. Live: Upstate NY. It's chilly and grey . . . but getting better every day!

M. Mom’s name: First: Amy, Middle: Carol.

N. Nicknames: I'm with Ashley on the Smashley. My mom also calls me Sandra because she feels like that name would have fit me better than Ashley (I was named after a soap opera character). Stephen and other friends shorten it to Ash often. When I was young, I always wanted a name that could be shortened so I'd have a legitimate second name (like Ben for Benjamin). But, alas . . .

O. Overnight hospital stays: Two. Both were when I was little -- I had tubes in my ears. As a result, I never felt comfortable putting my head under water when I was younger (plus, I'd get ear infections that way). I failed out of swimming class for this reason. So, that's why I'm not great at swimming freestyle. Or diving. Etc.

P. Pet peeves: "Jaime and I's house is nice" -- in other words, hyper-correction. Like I often hear on episodes of The Bachelor. "Me and Snooki went to the beach" -- in other words, plain bad English. Like I often hear on episodes of Jersey Shore.

Also, and this is weird, when I have a plate of to-be-eaten food near the kitchen sink and Stephen does dishes near it, I f.r.e.a.k. out. I feel like dirty water is going to get on my food. Hahha. Is there a support group for that?

Q. Quote from a movie: "A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti." -- Any quotes from that whole Silence of the Lambs series, though. Hahaha. Love it. "Hello, Clarice!"

R. Righty or lefty: Righty-o.

S. Siblings: Brother, Ryan -- he's 23.

T. Time you wake up: I've been trying to make it 6AM, but it's more like 6:30. I go to bed by 10:30 -- at latest -- every single night. I need that eight solid hours of sleep.

U. Underwear: Pretty basic -- though it has to be colored. White is so blah. Aaaaaand I absolutely despise thongs. Ewwww. Why even bother?

V. Vegetables you don't like: Lettuce and celery -- b.o.r.i.n.g. And canned anything (beets, artichokes, etc.).

W. What makes you run late: I easily lose track of time (though I'm somewhat obsessed with being on time, so I am rarely late -- but sometimes if I'm not early, I feel late). I can get totally absorbed into something . . . it can be scary. At the same time, I tend to do many things all at once . . . so, my mind is on other things.

X. X-rays you’ve had: Most recently: My left knee, but we're almost certain that's an IT band thing. Teeth at my last check-up. Before that, my left foot for a possible stress fracture after my first half marathon (that I didn't adequately train for) -- ended up being a fluke. Before that, my right knee because I twisted it almost 100% while packing to move apartments. Otherwise, I can't think of any! I've had an echocardiogram related to a genetic heart condition (bicuspid aortic valve , but I'm all clear). I had an ultrasound, too (when the appointment was made -- some old ladies in the waiting room congratulated me on my pregnancy . . . when in reality it was for unexplained pain in my lower abdomen, which ended up being related to my sacroiliac joint, in my lower back!).

Y. Yummy food you make: Breads. Anything with chocolate and peanut butter, too.

Z. Zoo animal favorites: Zoos make me really sad. I have a lot of favorite animals . . . but the ones that make me laugh the most are sea lions. Just thinking about a fat, unfortunate-looking sea lion basking in the sun, making that awful noise. Hahahahaha!!!

Random Thursday Stuff

>> Thursday, February 17, 2011

#1: CAT LADY . . . I fear I'm becoming that crazy cat lady. You know -- that woman down the street who stares longingly into the distance as she brags about what her fur-babies (gag!) did that day. Many most of my friends seem to have babies and children around. Lots of photos of cute stuff their kids do and adorable outfits their kids wear.

We just have our cats. At least for now.

Anyway, this is Scully's new pose. She lays this way for hours on end, usually on the wood floor. Like she's training for a Guinness Book record or something. We may just need to time her one of these days.

#2: FOOD RUT . . . I've toyed with the idea of doing another Day in the Life of my Stomach series. I enjoyed it last year -- even learned some stuff about my habits that helped me. Thing is, what I eat on a daily basis is pretty boring. (Yes, I've tried new things -- like soy-glazed salmon -- but still!)

Take breakfast, for example.

Every day for the past couple weeks, I've munched on a bowl of Kashi's Autumn Wheat cereal. With almond milk. Sometimes with a dab of peanut butter on top. Sometimes with half a grapefruit, too. I even poured my Roasted Quinoa "Tea" over it once. (Tasted OK, but not great.).

I guess I'm happy in my food rut at the moment. In fact, when I tried to break out of it and try something new. (Specifically, a wheat-free, gluten-free bread recipe.) Well, disaster struck. I almost set fire to our kitchen. I would have snapped a photo . . . but I was too busy waving smoke out our back door.

This isn't to say I'm not lusting over some incredible eats. Here are the top recipes I'm eying at the moment:

DESSERTS:

Emily's Black Quinoa Blueberry Pudding
Ashley's Coconut-Almond-Chocolate Butter
Angela's No-Bake PB-Chocolate Crispies w/ PB "Fudge"
Sarah's Cookie Dough Dip
Heidi's Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookies

MEALS:

Helene's Salmon and Swiss Chard Quiche
Katie's Sunday Morning Baked Eggs
Deb's Baked Potato Soup
Joy's Ginger and Lentil Soup

#3: OPEN MIC . . . Just a reminder that the Blogtastic "Open Mic" is still set for next Friday, February 25th. Not sure how many people are going to take part -- but the more the merrier! We had a sign-up list that all of a sudden stopped working, so if you signed up . . . thank you. If not, it doesn't matter. On the 25th, we'll post a fresh list where you can link to your post.

#4: NO SHAMPOO . . . Last of random thoughts for today: The No-Shampoo Project. We wrote about Stephen's switch from shampoo to a more natural, eco- and scalp-friendly approach back in December. Next week, we're going to post how it's going. And I'm starting my own adventure with the process.

To be honest, I'm somewhat afraid. And if my hair turns into an absolute oil sponge, I'll have to switch back.

Nothing specific to ask today. How are you? Just leave a comment or email us at neverhomemaker [at] gmail [dot] com.

The Early Days

>> Thursday, November 11, 2010

Frustrated doesn't even begin to describe how I'm feeling right now. It's nothing life-critical, but the video we made with the FAQs is . . . just . . . totally . . . GONE. I thought I had stored it safely away in a folder . . . but I actually put it in the WRONG folder that I swiftly threw into my computer's trash can. And I have the settings on my computer set so that trash is automatically deleted.

Time. Energy. Wasted.

We will re-record this weekend, but that means the post we had scheduled for today (the ACTUAL day of our blogiversary) won't go up as planned. But it WILL go up sometime next week. I'll make sure of it. You all asked some great questions -- and though we weren't able to answer them all, we hit on the most frequently asked.

We were even a little charming and funny, too. And we're typically super awkward on camera!

Ah, memories.

I thought it'd be fun to link to our first week of posts. There were quite a few of them, too! We took some from our old blog and added a few new to get this site up and running.
Even the word "overzealous" doesn't adequately describe the way we flooded the internet with posts that first week. What can I say? We were finding our groove. And over time, we've shifted focus to closely align with what comes most naturally to us: Running, Vegan/Vegetarian recipes, Healthy Living, etc.

(So, note to all you bloggers out there: Write what you LIVE. Then, coming up with content is easy!)

Now, those of your long-time readers may remember our monthly Blog Love Fests. The link list tool we used has undergone some changes, so we noticed the other day that all the old lists are -- GASP -- gone! For the Blogiversary, we thought we'd bring it back.

Just click below to enter your NAME, BLOG NAME, and BLOG ADDRESS (see my example for how it should look). Also: If you're reading this post from your favorite feed reader, you'll need to hop onto www.neverhomemaker.com -- the list won't show up unless you're on the site.

From the bottom of our hearts: Thank you for reading our blog. We mean it. That's why there isn't our usual "!" after the statement. Because we're serious, folks. Your comments and emails make our days brighter. And we hope we're able to do the same for you!

A Few Housekeeping Items . . .

>> Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Just like putting away dishes, the blog requires that we attend to a few housekeeping items. You know, the miscellaneous "stuff" that just doesn't fit well in other posts.

  • First, we have some GREAT Foodie Book Club posts this month already showing up on our link list. The book was Molly Wizenberg's A Homemade Life. And there's still time to share your post (in fact, I still need to share MY post -- and it's coming, soon). Just head over to the A HOMEMADE LIFE post by May 7th at 11PM EST. The next book the club is reading/reviewing is David Kamp's The United States of Arugula.
  • Second, those of you who added yourselves to our Blog Love Fest last month will be included in our Reader Blog Roll. Stay tuned for the posting of this list, which will be sometime later in the week. If you'd like to be added to it, please leave a comment or email us with your Name, Blog Name, Blog Address, and General Category (like food, fitness, style, home, etc.).
  • Third, we're still featuring Guest Posts and Reader Spotlights if you got 'em. We're specifically interested right now in featuring posts related to saving creatively on groceries (we're talking below $25 per week for 2 people), growing your own produce/eating locally, and cycling (we're getting into it -- and would love to share and READ your tips!). If you're interested in supporting (never home)maker in another way, check out this post.
  • Fourth, if you've been using our Recipe Finder tool (Wait? What's that? More info here.), you may have notice we've slacked a bit. But, don't fret. We'll be adding the latest and greatest recipes so you can search easily.
  • Fifth, if you haven't heard already -- we started a brand new Facebook page. Those of you who are following us on Networked Blogs will want to switch over. The fan page is much more interactive and fun. So, check it out -- (never home)maker on Facebook -- and let us know if you have any suggestions!
  • Last, a couple of weeks ago, you were all so kind to tell us what you like best about our content. It's REALLY helped us with planning our posts each weekend (because -- yes -- we write, plan, etc. most of this stuff between the hours of 5PM Friday and 5AM Monday, phew!). Now we'd love to learn how you first heard about our humble site.

Blog Love Fest: Special Edition

>> Wednesday, April 7, 2010

Welcome to a very special edition of Blog Love Fest! In previous months, I've posted a link list to share the love -- to share what our readers are writing about in their own blogs. Then I took the list down and started from scratch the next month. It's been working out great, and we've been getting some fantastic participation (just check out last month's edition).

But last night, I got a better idea. Why not start a blogLOVEroll? So, that's what I would like to do with this month's BLF.

Here's how it works. Just click below to add your blog name, name, and category to the link list. The category part is super important because it's how I'll organize the blogLOVEroll. I don't want to be too exclusive, but I'd like to stick to the following categories (the ones that best match the interest of our readers).
  • Food
  • Vegan/Vegetarian Food
  • Fitness
  • Style
  • Home
  • Budget
  • Healthy Living
If you think I've forgotten a category that matches the theme of (never home)maker, please leave a comment. Try to pick the category that represents the majority (top percentage) of your content. Just follow my example below . . .

You have until April 30th to add yourself to the list. After that point, I'll be making a tab on the top of our page where all of your links will be listed. Please note that adult and inappropriate sites will be removed. But, really, it's that easy! So, don't be shy! Share away . . . and if you've got friends who blog, send 'em this way. My goal is to get together a nice list for everyone to check out that will be permanent on the site.

Blog Love Fest: March 2010

>> Wednesday, March 3, 2010

It's that time again: Blog Love Fest! Last month, 63 of you participated. We're blown away! So, if you'd like to check out previous love fests, just look at the December, January, and February posts. Want to participate this month? Here's how . . . (and PS: if you added your blog last month -- feel MORE than free to add it again!)

Just click below to enter your NAME, BLOG NAME, and BLOG ADDRESS (or website, or Flickr account, whatever web-way your express yourself -- note: adult and inappropriate sites will be removed), and it'll be shared on this post for all those other (never home)makers to see. Also: If you're reading this post from your favorite feed reader, you'll need to hop onto www.neverhomemaker.com -- the list won't show up unless you're on the site.

It's that easy! So, don't be shy! Share away . . . and if you've got friends who blog, send 'em this way. My goal is to get together a nice list for everyone to check out. I'll post a button on my sidebar so we can enjoy 'em till April!

Pssst: You have until March 20th, then the list is closed until the next Blog Love Fest in April.

READER SPOTLIGHT: Sarah's Healthy Tacos

>> Friday, February 19, 2010

Happy Friday! I'm Sarah . . . and this is my dog Cooper. The main theme of my blog (Ladybird: Inspiration and Experimentation) is inspiration and experimentation. I post my budget-friendly recipes that I try out, not all vegetarian (sorry! my boyfriend is a veggie, so I'm working on meat-less meals), as well as what inspires my style.

I originally started my blog because after graduation from college (May 08) all of my friends moved in all different directions, and this was a great way to keep up with what everyone was doing in case we got a little to busy to call/email everyone. Since I'm kind of a foodie, and have always loved DIY projects, it evolved into the blog it is today. My style is also starting to take shape, so I also started to post these inspirations.

I'll be moving to New Orleans for medical school in the summer, and I can't wait to see what the city holds for me -- and will keep my blog updated with my adventures down there!

EASY AND HEALTHY TACOS
(click here to read the recipe on Sarah's Blog)

All you need . . .
  • Frozen pre-cut onions + peppers (perfect for single living!)
  • Salsa
  • 1 egg
  • 1 taco (or more like 1.5 if you're really hungry, which I usually am)
  • Cheese
  • Tortillas
  • Frozen Roasted Corn (from Trader Joe's. divine.)

Thanks to Sarah for sharing with us such a protein-packed recipe for our READER SPOTLIGHT! And if you'd like to be featured, just check out our info post with all the gooey details about the spotlight, as well as guest posting opportunities. And keep an eye out for Alison's Herbivore vs. Carnivore: What to do when your house is divided? -- which will be featured in next Friday's post.

Happy Weekend, Everyone!

>> Saturday, February 13, 2010

So, I doubt anyone is reading this post today . . . you're all out enjoying the snow and the weekend. But I thought I'd hop on here to show you guys what we did for Valentine's Day last year -- you know, if you're still itching for something to do.

We took one of my budget-friendly Valentine's Day stay IN ideas and made a lavish dinner for two.

The meal included the following . . .
The best part is that we have the recipes for everything except the toast/brie already on (never home)maker. Just click on the links in the list . . . it's not too late to cook up something unique, healthy, and romantic :) PS: If you're unfamiliar, the mimosas are as easy as pop, pour, and mix.

What you'll need . . .
  • 1 wheel of brie (we used President)
  • 2 scoop-fulls of jam (we used Wegmans Triple Fruit)
  • A sourdough round cut into slices

Method . . .
  1. Set your oven to the broil setting. It's best to use a pizza stone, so make sure that's in there, too. But you may just use a regular cookie sheet.
  2. Gather all ingredients and use a sharp knife to cut the rind off the brie. Be careful to just cut off the rind, you want to keep all the gooey stuff.
  3. Place all cheese and jam (we used two heaping spoonfuls) in a bowl and mash together using a fork until well combined . . . but also kind of chunky (can you tell this recipe is really just thrown together? yes!)
  4. Spread the cheese mixture on your bread, place slices on cookie sheet or on pizza stone, and broil until cheese is bubbly and golden brown. We checked ours every few minutes.
And enjoy! We'd love to hear what you're doing tomorrow for v-day. And that doesn't mean couples-only! I had many fun v-days on the single with friends. Anyway, let us know. What are we doing to celebrate? WE DON'T KNOW YET! Oh, the pressure is ON! But, of course, you'll hear all about it on Monday. In the meantime, if you're looking for some romance, check out photos from our wedding . . .

ALSO: We're gearing up to do another FAQ post in the near future . . . so if you have anything you're dying to know, just leave a comment or email us at neverhomemaker@gmail.com. For ideas, or if you simply just missed it -- here's our last FAQ post, Part #1: Who ARE the (never home)makers?.

Budget-Friendly Valentine's Day Ideas

>> Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Beloved reader Alaina wrote us recently to ask a GREAT question: "Do you have any ideas on making Valentines Day special and meaningful, but on a budget? My boyfriend and I like to do something small and sweet, but this year especially we're on a tight budget. Any suggestions?"

Of course, we put our thinking caps on immediately and starting coming up with ways we'd choose to celebrate the day on any price point under $100. You can also thank Alaina for coming up with some fantastic ideas, too. My favorite is the all-HIS movie marathon. I never let Stephen pick the movies we watch (mostly because he's into sci-fi, horror, and action -- all genres that don't exactly mix with my comedy, romantic-comedy, more comedy, and drama taste). But maybe that'd be a good gift for him this year.

Hmmm . . .

$100: One-Hundred Dollars and Zero Cents
  • Of course, the classic drinks ($25), dinner ($50), and a movie ($25) date is always appropriate for Valentine's Day. But I challenge you to patronize local establishments only. In this economy, the little guys are hurting -- so it's better to visit your local Giuseppe's than Olive Garden. Or the corner arts theater instead of Regal Cinema.
  • Take a day trip somewhere. This somewhere can be 30 minutes away or 2 hours away. But try to stick close to save on gas money. We did this recently and it didn't cost very much. Just break it down. If you stick within an hour of your hometown, you need only spend about $20 on gas. Coffee for two while you walk around town will set you back $10. A lunch or casual dinner is another $40 . . . and that leaves a hefty $30 for miscellaneous expenses, like stuffed-animal bears with the name of the town plastered on a T-shirt. Etc.

$75: Seventy-Five Dollars and Zero Cents
  • Take this day as an opportunity to spiff up your space. A fresh coat of paint on your bedroom walls is a mere $35. A couple new throw pillows? $30. And some sexy scented candles can be snagged up for $10. The romance generated by giving your bedroom a little TLC . . . priceless.
  • In the spirit of pampering yourselves, use your cash to book yourselves spa appointments . . . IN! You can go to your local TJ Max or Home Goods (Marshall’s, etc. discount stores) and pick up everything you need (towels, bathrobes, peppermint foot lotion, bubble bath, you-name-it) for $75 (or less, really). So why spend that – each – on a single spa treatment? Plus, it’ll give you incentive to clean your bathroom :)

$50: Fifty Dollars and Zero Cents
  • Staying in is something we’re totally into. So, cook a lavish dinner IN. Grab your favorite cookbook and make a meal you’ve been meaning to take a stab at but haven’t had the time. That's what we did last V-day (as pictured above). Plus, if you visit your local wine and spirits store, you’ll find tons of great wines for under $10 a bottle. That leaves $40 for all the fixings you’ll need for a feast for two.
  • Since V-Day is on a Sunday this year – why not start the day off right by grabbing brunch? Diners are great places for cheap, but delicious brunches. And on your way home, you can stop by a museum or catch a matinee.

$25: Twenty-Five Dollars and Zero Cents
  • Like to give gifts? Being on a budget doesn’t need to hamper your fun. But make it a challenge. Budget only $12.50 for each other, and see what thoughtful item you can get that will make the other’s day. Stephen bought me a grocery store bouquet for $10 a couple Fridays ago . . . made me smile, and didn’t set us back like roses would have. Plus, gerbera daisies were our wedding flowers and, therefore, more personal. It forces you to get creative, too. And the grocery store is a great place to find all this stuff, by the way. You can go, split up, and then exchange your goods on the way home.
  • And who says you have to go out for a full meal to celebrate your love? Dessert’s the thing on the 14th of Feb that has everyone mushy and gooey. Dine in for the main event and then treat yourselves to dessert OUT somewhere divine. You may even have enough cash left over to rent a few flicks for the night.

$0: Zero Dollars and Zero Cents
  • Oh, we’ve been there. But love is free, and you can certainly do more with less . . . or nothing at all. Look around the house and see what you’ve got. Have an evening of unplugged games (get some ideas in our board games for pennies post) – no Wii allowed. Learn a new cooking technique together (and if you’re looking for a new cookbook, go check out our giveaway). Give each other a massage. Have him paint your toenails. Whatever. But just do stuff together with what you have. Because when it all boils down . . . you really only need each other. Awww.
  • Along this same vein – do something for you partner you might not usually do. Like wash the dishes, in our case. Maybe make up one of those little coupon books and fill it with tasks and treats you can give for free. Stephen loves banana cake, and I hate it. So, I’d make a coupon that says “Good for ONE tasty Banana Cake” (That’s what she said? Ohhhh . . . sorry, it’s the bananas. Should have come up with a different example.).
What does Alaina suggest? Check 'em out . . .
  • Make an apple pie -- my boyfriend's weakness -- and dust off the good old Super Nintendo for a night of old-school video games.
  • Gift him different kinds of beers -- it's fun to surprise him with new ones, but it seems the best ones are the most expensive ones. (We hear you, Alaina!)
  • Go to our favorite Chinese place and each buy the other one dinner. We both love Chinese so much, and it would be our 'gift' to one another.
  • Have a movie marathon. There are so many movies that he says "I can't believe you haven't seen that!" or "You HAVE to see that!" so I also thought about having a movie marathon that he's 100% in charge of.
Bottom line: No matter your budget, you don’t need any dough to bake up some romance on Valentine’s day this year. Just be smart, stick to your budget, and remember that it’s really just a made-up holiday . . . so no need to spend big. It’s the little things, really, that make an impact.

Do you folks have any budget friendly activities to suggest? We'd love to hear 'em. Just leave a comment!

What's the Deal? Reader Spotlight on (never home)maker

    >> Thursday, February 4, 2010

Do you read (never home)maker? (Check!)
Do you have something you'd like to share with us? (Maybe?)

Then you might be interested in our new READER SPOTLIGHT series. The best part is, you don't need a blog to participate. We were looking at all the good great reads we've been collecting in this month's Blog Love Fest, and it got us thinking: You're all making such tasty stuff, DIY-ing such amazing projects, writing such wonderful posts, taking such gorgeous photos . . . and we'd love to share it with everyone!

The Deal: Every Friday (starting as soon as we get submissions -- so we're talking you could perhaps be featured tomorrow if you get back to us today!) we'd like to dedicate an entire post to YOU -- and you, and you, and you, and you.

The Criteria: Just follow the guidelines below . . .
    • We'd appreciate if what you send us fits with the theme of our blog. DIY projects, recipes (of the vegan or vegetarian persuasion), budget-friendly tips and tricks, style suggestions, running and health-related musings, yoga poses, etc.
    • We'd love you include at least one photo to help describe, illustrate, etc. what you're writing about. You don't need to be a photography king or queen, but attention to detail (good lighting, etc.) is appreciated.
    • We'd be smitten if you write something brief -- however much text you feel you need to, but no more than 150 words or so (recipes can be longer, of course). So, if you don't need many words -- less is more. Don't feel you need to go on and on if you just have something short to share.
    • We'd like if recipe submissions could be proofed carefully (so if people try to make your stuff, it will turn out right).
    • We'd be totally cool with you sharing previous posts from your blog. Just write up a brief summary and provide a link to your site.
    • We'd also very much appreciate if you include some information about you. This could just be a brief one-sentence bio . . . a photo . . . a link to your blog . . . or whatever else you think will help us know YOU more.
    • We'd be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Just leave us a comment or email us at neverhomemaker@gmail.com.

What's in it for me? Our humble site gets around 1,000 visitors a day. We have a dedicated and much-loved subscriber base of 545 people (and that's as of today, but it's growing, thanks to wonderful folks like you!). Basically, what's in it for you is an eager audience just waiting to bask in your creative genius. What's better is that sharing creates a sense of community, and you get to know your fellow readers and showcase your well-honed crafts at the same time!

Where do I sign up? If you'd like to send us something for our consideration . . . just email us at neverhomemaker@gmail.com. Please include all the information we've outlined above. Note: We likely won't be able to publish EVERYTHING we get. And sending us stuff isn't a guarantee for posting. However, we're not as picky as some other sites. We like to consider (never home)maker a blog for THE PEOPLE. No elitism here. As well, please don't send more than one item for consideration just yet. We want everyone to have a fair chance at their moment in the spotlight!

Also: If you have your own blog and would like to write something more lengthy. Consider guest posting! More details can be found on our Support (never home)maker page, as well as via email. Just send us the details about what exactly you'd like to write, and we'll chat about possible inclusion on the site. Note: All guest posts should be original material that has no been published elsewhere.

Pssssst: If you haven't had a chance yet, go check out our BLOG LOVE FEST. You can add your blog to the list we have going -- it's a fantastic way to learn about your fellow readers and find great sites to browse.

Owl Jewelry: Too Cute Not To Share

    >> Wednesday, January 6, 2010

So, this is a plug for my friend, fellow marathon-obsessed runner Daniele over at Thistle Farm Arts. Not only is she a rock star on the pavement, a dynamo in the kitchen . . . but she also creates the most amazing artsy things!

Take these beautiful owls, for instance. Super cute, and they can be made into earrings, pendants, or even charms! Anyway, go check out her blog and her etsy shop. You won't be disappointed!
