Last-Minute Gifts // My Real-Life Suggestions

>> Wednesday, December 13, 2017

I am not going to make any huge adult gift list this year. But I will share a few things Stephen and I are actually getting under the tree. (Not TOTALLY done shopping yet!) I headed out to browse at physical stores over the weekend and was overwhelmed with traffic, parking, etc. So, this is all stuff you can find on Amazon if you're doing things last-minute and want to avoid the crowds.

I'd rather bake and decorate cookies.

Ashley

  • Cat Draft Stopper. I shared this idea a few years ago and finally took the plunge this year. It arrived yesterday, and it's AWESOME. I can't wait for the girls to see it. And for it to block that draft by the front door.
  • KOZiKICKS Slippers. I'm a sucker for a good Shark Tank product. I couldn't resist these when I actually saw them in the store. They are really comfortable and seem extremely well made.
  • Spinning Vanity Organizer. Woohoo. Exciting! No, really. My mom got one of these recently, and she said it was life-changing. LOL. I'm hoping it'll help tame the clutter.
  • New Robe. There's a theme here, I guess. Things to be cozy. I haven't decided on exactly which robe, but it has to be really warm and hopefully have sherpa on it.
  • Aromatherapy Necklace. I've wanted one of these for a while. I don't do tons of oils, but I do like the scent on me from time to time, especially lavendar or balsam fir. Yes. I like to smell like a Christmas tree.

Stephen

  • Yaktrax. Stephen is a trooper and runs even when it's super slick outside. We both use our running snowshoes when the powder really accumulates. But I thought these would be helpful if it's icy, which often happens.
  • Fandango Gift Card. Since we don't have family around, Stephen and I often don't go on dates. Well, at least together. We each love going to the movies, so I got Stephen a Fandango gift card. They come in varying amounts, but I just did $25 -- enough for about three movies/matinee.
  • Carharrt Hat. You can never have too many of these hats. We steal them from one another and sometimes can't find them when we need them, so I got a backup to the two we already have.
  • Guitar Stuff. Stephen actually picked out his own gear, and I have no idea what he chose. I know he got a distortion pedal for his electric. Anyway, gear for their favorite hobby is usually a safe bet!
  • Power Bank. He's wanted one of these external iPhone batteries for a while. Honestly, I sort of want one, too.

Girls

Here are a few things I got for the girls to fill in the gaps, so to speak. Since I did my shopping early, there have been just a few things I've wanted to get since then. Mostly, the girls have both taken to playing with the toy kitchen. Together! It's awesome. But Ada's stash of play food has dwindled over the years.

I got them:

Family

Alright, so this one is something I saw and thought could have gone one of two ways. First, it could have been a really stupid flop. Or, alternatively, it could be AMAZING. I was unable to contain myself, so I gave our family this gift over the weekend. AND IT WAS A HUGE, MASSIVE HIT.

What is it? An Indoor Snowball Fight kit

I know, I know. Ridiculous.

But you basically get all these large white pom balls that feel like real snow compacting when you squish them. There's no secret, you just throw them at one another. We have literally played this for hours already (Ada begged to play before school today), and I've recommended it to all my friends. It's a good way to get moving indoors when it's extremely cold (it "feels like" 0 degrees F here today).

More gift lists

And if you'd like to look back at my suggestions from previous years, have at it! I stand by everything I've posted. In fact, I still use those ideas today. Like I said, I finally bought that cat draft stopper, and I couldn't be happier.

PS: Don't forget to check out my Christmas messy house tour.

JCPenney // Where Giving Begins

>> Thursday, December 10, 2015

When I last featured JCPenney on the blog, I told you guys all about how the store had been a part of my back-to-school routine since I was a kid. Well, the same goes for Christmas! Each and every year about a month or so before the holiday, my grandparents would drop off the big (I mean BIG!) holiday catalog at our house and tell us to circle anything that looked especially exciting to us.

Here’s the thing about that catalog. Where I’m from, there aren’t a lot of toy stores. So, the items I would see in the toy section were out-of-this-world to me. One year, I picked out a huge dollhouse. Another year, my brother and I decided we’d like a kid-sized pool table for the basement playroom. And the year I remember best? My grandparents gave my cousin, my brother, and me ventriloquist dummies! I named mine Harry.

Now that I’m the person doing the holiday shopping, I’m looking for a few things. First, I want unique, quality gifts. I don’t want to have to shop around too much (especially this year with the morning sickness!). And I want good deals. (Who doesn’t?).

SheKnows gave me the opportunity to revisit my holiday history with JCPenney and shop for some of my family’s Christmas gifts this year. A gift toast, if you will. Now, I would have headed to the store (it’s only a few miles away from my front door), but I decided to do it online because they were having some great sales.

Stephen started his career as a cross country coach this year. So, when I saw that JCPenney sells Nike apparel, shoes, and gear, I knew immediately what I wanted to get for my fitness guy. I chose the Nike Club Swoosh Fleece Pullover and the Nike Club Swoosh Fleece Jogger Pants.

Here are more Nike gifts I considered:

For my cuddle buddy Ada? Oh, that was entirely too easy! The store has an amazing selection of Disney toys, so I browsed around and very quickly found exactly what I was looking for: a 9-pack of Disney Princess Dolls.

Talk about the crazy impact this box is going to have on Christmas morning!

Here are more Disney gifts I considered:

And then I decided to gift myself (the cooker and baker of the house) something small. Honestly, I’m pretty sure my gift will keep giving to my family for years to come when I make food for the holidays. JCPenney carries KitchenAid, and I chose this 5-Speed Hand Mixer that I already have some holiday recipes in mind for.

Here are some more great KitchenAid gifts:

JCPenney has gifts for everyone on your list, including stuff from:
  • Nike
  • Levi’s
  • Keurig
  • Kitchen Aid
  • Nutribullet
  • Diamond Stud Earrings
  • Disney
  • Star Wars
  • Boots
  • Team Sports Apparel
If you’re still shopping for all your favorite people, check out JCPenney’s gifts. You can also also follow the store on FacebookTwitterPinterestInstagramYoutube, and Google+! All month long, JCPenney will be playing secret Santa to #GiftToast different celebrities with fun and entertaining gifts. Check out the hashtag and chime in for your own chance to get gifted some cool stuff!

What are some of your favorite gifts you plan to give this year? Tell me for your chance to win a $100 JCPenney gift card!

Gifts for Him // 2015 Edition

>> Monday, December 7, 2015

I’m writing my guys list this year as I attempt to shop for Stephen. He’s a hard guy to find gifts for. He’s into a lot of stuff. Running, playing guitar, reading, listening to music, being outdoors, working around the house, etc. So, I find I like to pick a lane and stick with gifts that surround one of his interests. That being said, I can’t choose!

So, here’s a bunch of stuff that would satisfy all his interests.

(PS: Don’t miss the Gifts for Kids list!)

Gifts for Kids // 2015 Edition

>> Wednesday, December 2, 2015

I can’t believe it’s December already! As you know, I do gift lists every year. I’m no Oprah, but I enjoy assembling these lists. Last year, I did the whole “30 gifts for under $30” thing. This year, I made the list more varied. As always, a lot of these items are things Ada plays with daily or has been given (or WILL be given) as gifts.

PS: While we’re on the topic of the holidays -- I have a question! Ada, my JUST turned 4-year-old, came home today crying because a kid in her preschool class was spreading around that Santa isn’t real. I know families have so many different ways they approach this issue. But I was just like c’mon! It’s too early for her spirit to be crushed on this issue. Any suggestions for how to keep the magic alive?

Alright. Let’s jump in first with the kid list this year!

Stephen and I started dating 10 years ago on Valentine’s Day. We had been on a bunch of half-dates, but planned out dinner, dessert, and board games for that snowy February night. This year, we’re not sure what we’re doing yet. We might trek to Ithaca to see Ira Glass speak at the State Theater and have dinner at Moosewood. We might just stay home. Whatever the case, we celebrate every year.

24 Great Brands Made In the USA

>> Monday, December 15, 2014

Several of you requested I make up a gift list of products made in the USA. Good idea! So, this will be my last gift list of the season (and there are just four shopping days left for shipment before the holiday). Regular posting and continued blog merging will begin tomorrow. FYI: I consulted this handy guide, which also includes many more American-made brands -- you should definitely check it out.

Versus a single item -- these links go to the entire brand as a whole so you can browse their offerings in all price ranges and for all people on your list. As always, we own items made by most of the brands on this list, so they’re tried + true. My favorite on this list? Pendleton. I pooled all my Christmas money last year and bought a wool blanket for our bed that will last a lifetime.

And . . . no. I haven’t finished my Christmas shopping yet.

Flint and Tinder Basics (men + women)
Kiehl’s Bath (men + women)

Junk Food T-Shirts (whole family)
Larsen Toy Lab (wooden toys, games)
Poof Slinky (toys, books, games...)

Green Toys (blocks, etc.)

30 Gifts For $30 or Less // Baby

>> Wednesday, December 10, 2014

And now for a few frugal gifts for the two and under crowd. The vast majority of the items on this list are things we actually used ourselves during Ada’s baby years. It was kind of emotional writing up this list because I had lots of memories of our tiny, drooling little girl!

Here we go:

30 Gifts For $30 or Less // Kids

>> Friday, December 5, 2014

Hey, guys. So, this list for kids was harder to assemble than I expected. Children change so incredibly much from year to year -- so it’s difficult to get a catch-all guide for the kinds of gifts they’d love to see under the tree, etc. I may actually write up a list for babies (2 and under), but I’m going to give you a break from gift lists for a few posts because I have food and other thoughts to share.

Psst: If you’re catching up here’s my list for Gifts Under $30 (Ladies) and Gifts Under $30 (Gents).

I actually favor non-toy gifts for kids as the big event. Like a membership to a museum, a dance or swim class, a day-trip filled with unique experiences, or something else memorable for the whole family. However, this year we’ve discovered that Ada has aged out of a lot of her toys, so we did end up getting her several things (on this list) to replace those items we’re putting in storage for whenever baby #2 comes.

Happy Friday!

30 Gifts For $30 or Less // Gents

>> Wednesday, December 3, 2014

I’m so glad to hear you like these gift lists! Stephen helped with this list for the guys in our lives. I think guys are notoriously difficult to buy for -- so I can use any help I can get. Same rule applies here as did in the 30 Gifts For Ladies post. These items are all under $30 and are either things we own, things on Stephen’s gift list, or presents we plan to give to family/friends this year.

Enjoy!

Retro Flip Down Clock (OK. It’s $31!)

30 Gifts For $30 or Less // Ladies

>> Tuesday, December 2, 2014

I enjoy putting together a few gift lists every year. (Actually, I spent hours, no joke, on this post because I really enjoy online window + deals shopping.) For 2014, the focus is all on frugality (who’s with me?!) -- I’ll be giving you guys a list for her, him, and kids. All of the items on this list are under $30, and mostly under $20! And -- as always -- these gifts are things that are on my own Christmas list, or -- in many cases -- items I already own.

Let’s get to it:

Season's Greetings & Farewell to STUFF

>> Tuesday, November 30, 2010

If someone asks me if I've started my holiday shopping yet one more time, I think I may freak out. I feel like I say this every month, but I can't believe it's already November 30th. Halloween . . . done. Thanksgiving . . . also over. My answer to the shopping question, by the way, is a big fat no. In fact, we still have pumpkins in our house from Halloween. As much as I enjoy the holidays, they always speed by. I'm always stressed when I realize it's one week until the big day and I've got . . . nothing ready.

It's not that I don't care. It's not that I'm a procrastinator (in all reality, however, I most certainly am. I thrive on it.). The time simply slips away from me. Working full time will do that to a gal (or guy), am I right? This year, I'd like it to change, though.

For my actions to be proactive -- planned -- for once.

But in all of this, there's also this intense desire I've had recently to eliminate STUFF from my life. To live more simply. To buy less. To want less. To invest more time, energy, caring, love -- more of myself -- into everything I do, everything I have, everyone I know. So, by now I think you're starting to see that (cue the music) I'm dreaming of a handmade Christmas.

Realistically, I won't be able to knit, bake, and toil over gifts for every man, woman, and child in my life. And that's OK. But I have some holiday goals. (I guess we can add them to the list of my life goals.) Hopefully by following this guide, we'll make it through the season with a little less stress, strife, and less STUFF cluttering our spaces.

#1: SIMPLIFY AND LIBERATE

Consider this the pre-present preparation. We started over the weekend with our wardrobes. We'll continue over the next couple weeks with our kitchen, our games, our books, and all other items. We want to live with less. What this means is purging our house of all the excess.

The task can seem daunting at first, but becomes incredibly liberating upon completion.

How to begin?
  1. Choose a category of STUFF. For example: Clothing.
  2. Dump all that STUFF in a room. Create piles of "keep" (gotta-have-it) and "toss" (broken or unusable) and "donate/sell" (still of worth, just not for your) and "not sure" (self-explanatory). Write out labels if it helps.
  3. Then go through your STUFF and put it in a pile that corresponds with your feeling toward it. This part is tricky, but try to go with your gut. (If it doesn't fit or you haven't worn it in years, seriously -- get rid of it!)
  4. With the "not sure" STUFF, you may want to go through it again and see if your feelings have changed by the end of your sorting. If you have the space, you can hold onto it for a couple months (in your attic, perhaps) to see if you find yourself looking for it. If you don't -- TOSS or DONATE/SELL.
  5. Choose one area of your STUFF each weekend until you've gone through most of your belongings. Who knows, you may even find some gifts in there!

#2: EXAMINE AND COMMUNICATE

Most of us have things we need and things we don't need. When giving gifts, it's hard to tell what that other person might need or want sometimes. Take out the guesswork by asking. When receiving gifts, it's hard for that other person to tell what you may need or want. Take out the guesswork by sharing. C.o.m.m.u.n.i.c.a.t.i.n.g. Before doing so, though, you may want to examine your current activities/hobbies/things you find enjoyable, goals, and life situations.

By examining your life, you'll be able to tell your aunt, for example, that you really would like a winter coat this year versus 4 sweater sets. Or your brother that you'll like a gift card -- even if it's only for $15 -- to Wegmans versus a scarf that you'd otherwise just add to your pile of many, many scarves (I'm speaking, of course, from personal experience. Ryan -- Did you catch that?). Sometimes, and as in the case of my grandmother, you may want your loved ones to give on your behalf to a charity or other organization.

No, you won't always have the opportunity to openly communicate gift desires, but when you're able -- it can be most helpful to you (and your friends/family members) for both giving/receiving.

#3: GIFT OUTSIDE THE BIG BOX

Quite literally. There are countless presents you can give that don't involve wrapping paper or boxes. I actually enjoy these kinds of gifts better than others in many cases. What am I talking about? Here are some ideas:
  • Yoga classes. Cooking class. Crafting classes. All sorts of classes!
  • Movie tickets. Concert tickets. Hockey tickets. All sorts of event tickets!
  • Dinner. You cook (little cost!). Or take a friend/family member out.
  • Pedicures. Manicures. Spa treatments. Haircuts. Etc.
  • Day trips. Nights out. Just going someplace -- even if it isn't far -- can be an awesome gift.
  • And, of course, homemade stuff always works. Think scarves, cookies, photo prints, etc. Whatever your talent is, you can put it to work!
Basically, don't give stuff. Give experiences. An iPod that may be obsolete next month. Or a bag that may go out of style next season. If you gift experiences, they'll create memories that last a lifetime!

#4: JUST SAY NO

I think we've all had one of those awkward moments where we've either received or given a gift that wasn't reciprocated. Well, folks, it's OK to NOT give gifts. I've read in magazines that it's advisable to be ready with some emergency presents in case you receive from someone unexpected. Nah. I say nip this problem in the bud before it becomes, well, a problem to begin with! Sometimes all you need is, again, communication.

If you're in a bad spot money-wise . . . or even just trying to simplify, start a family-only rule. Your friends should truly understand if you explain the reasoning behind it. Plus, saying no to gifts (and I'm mostly talking about STUFF) doesn't mean you can't still do something special like many of the items in tip #3. Same goes with coworkers. If your office doesn't already have some sort of system in place (like Michael's Yankee Swap), be frank. Maybe agree to treat each other to coffee or something.

But save the elaborate stuff for those nearest and dearest to your hearts. Even then, consider all these ideas for a less wasteful, less financially burdensome, less clutteriffic holiday season!

Now, I'm sure you've got some of your own tips. And we'd love to hear them! Just leave a comment or email us at neverhomemaker [at] gmail [dot] com.
