Miscarriage: What They Don’t Tell You

>> Monday, April 27, 2015

For those of you who read here mostly for food and fitness, I want you to know I’m nearing the end of wanting to write about my miscarriage. But I have had enough moments where I’ve had things happen or experienced something that I’ve wanted to share related to everything that happened exactly a month ago (I just know because I had blood work done this morning).

Regardless: I’m moving forward, or at least trying to.

Like I said, in the wake of my D&C, I’ve had some things happen. Or just been surprised, etc. Things I didn’t except. Things that were good . . . and others that weren’t. I wanted to share them here for anyone else who might be going through something similar. (And if you are, I’m so sorry for your loss.)

Your Body Does Its Own Thing

After my D&C, I had a week of night sweats very much like after I gave birth to Ada. It’s the hormones. I have even started losing my hair like after I gave birth to Ada. So weird. From everything I’ve read, women react differently to miscarriage and medical intervention. I only made it to around 10 weeks, but some even have their milk come in and other physical reactions as if the baby was born and in their arms. It adds insult to injury, but it’s something I totally didn’t know about until after the fact.

There Will Be Blood

As far as bleeding after a D&C, I was told I should expect pretty much nothing heavy. Maybe a regular period, but more likely not. I won’t go into details, but I had several days of crazy bleeding and more because part of the placenta wasn’t taken out during my procedure, so my body had to pass on its own. So, if you’re bleeding heavily or something is different, call your doctor. Many times, it’s completely normal (even a LOT of blood, clots, etc.) and you’ll get a prescription for something to make your uterus contract and get out whatever needs to happen to “complete” the miscarriage. I bled for three weeks after the D&C.

Your Period Might Take a While

I’m a full month out from the procedure, and I’m pretty sure my cycle isn’t returning anytime soon. The “normal” timeframe I was given by my doctor was around 4-6 weeks after to get that first period. But after that, the cycle might not be like clockwork. It might be heavier or lighter. It might be erratic, etc. Basically, except the unexpected. Usually your body will need to go under 5 mIU/IL of HCG to ovulate (or initiate a period otherwise). If you were up in the tens of thousands (or more), this can take time. Usually HCG levels drop by around half every 48 hours. But this can range due to a number of factors.

People Might Not Know What To Say

I’ve been fortunate to have a ton of supportive friends and family by my side. That being said, even the most supportive and amazing person might just not know what to say about stuff. I mean, it’s heavy. For example, Ada keeps telling my friends that her mommy is having a baby. My friends know the whole story. And this is hard to hear . . . but it’s hard for my friends to know what to say. It becomes this awkward moment. So, I’ve learned to just put it all out in the open and explain that I’m OK. That it’s OK to talk about it. That -- yes -- what Ada said is awkward for me too, etc.

Emotions Will Strike

I’ll have several days when I feel like I’m emotionally in a great place. But then something truly random will set me off. The other day I took Ada to Toys ‘R Us to get some art supplies. She needed to use the bathroom. And BAM. There we were in the middle of the crib section (which is where the bathroom is), surrounded by pregnant women, cribs, and tiny baby things. Another time, I was getting something out of the spare room closet and I had forgotten that I stashed these little baby booties back there. They fell on the ground, I had to pick them up, and I had a good cry. It’s OK to have this lurking below the surface for a while, it’s grief and it takes time. (I’m telling myself this, too.)

Your Partner Will Deal In His/Her Own Way

Stephen hasn’t expressed his emotions as freely as I have. But a couple weeks after the miscarriage, he came home and said that something he teaches each year completely caught him off guard that day. It was Hemingway’s six-word short story: “For sale: Baby shoes. Never worn.” Yeah. When he told me, I about lost it. So, even if your partner isn’t crying as much as you are or talking about what happened, he or she is still coping in one way or another.

// Thanks

And to those of you who have written me with positive feedback about these posts, thank you. Sometimes I don’t know if I’m crossing a line into beyond-TMI territory. (I mostly definitely do.) At the same time, there are so many times I’ve been helped by something I’ve read online -- so I want to add my experience to the mix. It’s a crazy life, and we live in this age where we can connect with others who’ve experienced the stuff we’re going through.

Missed miscarriage is not something I ever imagined being a part of my story, but with the help of friends and those special internet connections, it’s been a lot less scary and devastating.

Freezer Drawer // Love or Hate It?

>> Tuesday, January 28, 2014

Airing my dirty laundry today. Or, I guess in this case, it's my cluttered freezer drawer.

We have an upright freezer in our basement that I have filled to the brim (and organized, labeled, etc.!) with all sorts of foods, from Vegetarian Freezer Month eats to big bulk bags of veggies + fruits to glass containers of homemade staples, like applesauce, waffles, and chili.

Our refrigerator's freezer drawer is quite another story, as you can see. It's a catch-all for leftovers that aren't as, well, planned. Like bananas that are too ripe. Or half bags of frozen stuff. Or old freezer packs. (We have a million on them somehow.) From what I discovered . . . stuff expired in 2007 and ALL . . . what we keep upstairs is stuff we rarely eat.

Hmmm.

I think a huge part of it is my own lack of labeling and organization coupled with the poor design. Or let me re-state that. The poor design for my own preferences. When we bought our refrigerator several years ago, a drawer was a HOT item on my must-have list. Now? I don't really like hate it! Everything gets lost in there.

After doing a major cleaning, I ended up getting rid of the majority of what you see above. Including a few rogue breastmilk bags from Ada's first year. Now we're left with an empty space looking to be filled.

Here's the deal:
  • I'm planning to keep a roll of masking tape + a Sharpie next to the fridge to make labeling simple.
  • I'd also like to create a list of what's in the freezer to post on the refrigerator door.
  • I might invest in some smarter storage for that type of space, maybe something like these taller, slimmer containers.
  • I may also try to create some loose zones in the freezer (like fruit, veggies, meals, desserts, etc.) so everything is easier to find.
  • And obviously, I need to clean the freezer more regularly to keep everything under control.
I'm hoping to unveil a much more inspiring freezer space the next time I share. But I guess I'm wondering if any of you have tips you could give me. Do you have a freezer drawer? Love or hate it? And, it not -- maybe there are universal methods that would work for everyone?

I need all the help I can get!

This photo has been taunting me for almost a year. I came up with this wicked awesome recipe for 6 veggie burgers and 6 puffy buns that could all be cooked at the same temperature for the same amount of time in a single standard muffin pan.

So, my goal this weekend is to recreate + tweak it (because the original burgers were pretty thick, am I right?). Hopefully you'll see something along these lines on this site next week!

I haven't featured a recipe in a while. The reason is super lame: I can't find my camera charger. Yup, yup, nope. So, that's on the to-do list this weekend. Along with finishing week two of my 10K training, cooking up some vegetarian freezer meals, and attending Jack's wake.

PS: Welcome to November!

I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to a quiet, uneventful weekend. We're not much into heavily loading Saturday and Sunday anyway, but I envision a lot of low-key meals and time in the backyard on the horizon. I love this time of year. Well, except that we have a literal ton of leaves ready for raking!

It makes for a beautiful chore.

Oh, yeah. Lots of frozen foods . . . and fitness. I forgot to mention that I'm swimming again. My bastardized breast stroke gets me a mile in just under 45 minutes, which I'm trying to do at least once a week. Especially now since Ada is tolerating gym childcare consistently! I've also added a bit of stationary cycling to my routine, 30 minutes at a time or so.

I train like a triathlete from time to time, but really don't see myself participating in a race. I don't know why. It's just not my scene. It's hard enough for me to remember my shoes let alone all that other gear!

// Gym Essentials //
My Garmin Forerunner 10 is working out great after some initial glitches.
I wear Merrell Gloves for my biking, lifting, and treadmill jogs. They make many other styles, too.
This gym duffle, albeit gigantic, is working out great to transport my stuff along with Ada's!

Finally jumping on the Oxford trend -- I like these saddle shoes.

I also have a thing for active sweaters -- loose ones like this + this + this.

// Nesting //
Love this refrigerator file station, it's pretty + super organized.
We're actually in the process of making a faux brick wall for our living room inspired by this one.
I'd eventually like to fake some thick beams for some architectural flair. Who knows!

Happy Memorial Day weekend. We hope our US readers are looking forward to a nice, long weekend. The temperatures have taken a nose-dive where we live, so those visions of lazy afternoon picnics and other outdoor activities have sort of faded for us. But that's OK. I'm getting an eye exam (FINALLY) to see if I can get some contacts again. Summer running with glasses is the pits!

Let's get to it . . .

Update: I LOVE those Leopard Print Crocs I bought. Embarrassingly so.
Up to 70% off Kate Spade Jewelry + more to punctuate a simple wardrobe.

 // Also . . . //
I've pared my closet down to just 50 clothing items.
No, really. And it's already much easier this way. I'll write more soon.
Been looking back through Kendi's 30 for 30 archives for outfit inspiration

Not to rag on this weekend since it hasn't even happened yet, but I'm super excited for NEXT weekend. I love holiday cookouts, so tomorrow we'll be tuning up our charcoal grill and getting all the supplies we need for an outdoor feast of sorts.

In the meantime . . .

// Down for the Count //
After posting about MyFitnessPal experience, I've struggled.
I think tracking what I eat is really helpful, but I'm getting too numbers-focused.
And then I eat things like delicious Justin candy bars versus healthy snacks.

// Sniffles + Sneezes //
Here's some good advice for how to deal with allergies on the run.
Personally, I do saline nose spray + homeopathic remedy + occasionally these eye drops.
I also make sure I shower off ASAP to get all the pollen.

// Dreams //
Wow this beautiful backyard movie night looks enchanting.
Hard to top that.

// Foot Finds //
I bought leopard crocs sandals this week. Is something wrong with me?
If I don't like them, I may send instead for these Reef sandals (good deal!).
Everyone keeps suggesting Rainbow sandals. Any experiences?

// Spring to Summer Eats //
Parmesan-Garlic Grilled Corn -- might make for Memorial Day.
Strawberry + Rhubarb Crumb Pie b/c I'm in the mood to bake a pie.

// Pretty (Cool) Playhouse //
I'd love to get Ada a playhouse for the backyard.
I've been scouring Craigslist and our local mom's yard sale group for a deal.
Been totally inspired by this project + this project. Stay tuned!

// Smart Stuff //
Building a straw bale shed + did you know I dream of living in a bale house?
Grilling sandwiches using your waffle maker via Edible Perspective.

// Homesteading //
Yard to Farm via Brooklyn Based
Realistically, I may plant a large backyard perennial garden, thanks to Aynsley for the inspiration!

And I have a simple recipe to add to my discussion about Mushrooms for Runners:

Just saute some garlic and sliced mushrooms in a pan for a few minutes (until softened and fragrant) and then lower the heat and add a few cups of baby spinach. Wilt and serve warm with whatever you're eating on a given night. Goes well with eggs . . . with sandwiches . . . whatever!

I write a heck of a lot, but I'm getting back into reading more, too. In the next couple months, you'll see a few book reviews here on the blog. Last night, I dove into this great read . . .

// Books + Cookbooks //
Forrest Pritchard's Gaining Ground will be released later this month.
Jenny Corenco's Bébé Gourmet was just released yesterday.
And Miche Bacher's Cooking with Flowers is calling to me in this nice weather.
(More on these titles soon!)

// Say Cheese! //
Stephen has his beer brewing. I was going to do kombucha, but we know how that went.
So, now I want to try making cheese. Mozzarella to start -- this recipe looks easy enough!

// Fitness in the Interim //
After the half marathon, I'm thinking of mixing stuff up before marathon training.
Getting into at-home spinning + swimming (our pool is fixed!) + maybe 30-day Shred.
Overall, I want to avoid getting bored with logging mile after mile.

// A Not-So Fast //
After our reader question about juice fasting, I have been curious.
I may also try a modified juice cleanse for a few days to see what it's like.
Anyone know of good plans that incorporate clean eating and/or full dinners?

// Cinco De Mayo Eats //
I'm not big on roundup posts, but here are some festive recipes:

// Fashion Finds //
All-time favorite Teva Flip-Flops + bright Bib Necklaces
Organic graphic printed duds for the little ones, too!

// Picking Paint //
We're 95% sure we're getting our house painted this summer.
It's so hard choosing exterior colors! But I think we've settled on this classic scheme.
Any idea when Sherwin-Williams is having another sale?
